Default damn insurance company

rang up my insurance company last tuesday to declare

forge eliminator DV
carbonio CAI
tinted windows

was on hold for 33mins. spoke to a guy in broken english. was terrible. asked what bodykit i was putting on. bodykit ???? dump valve, whats one of those ? yes, it took some time. after about 20mins. needs to be referred to u/w's about DV.

1week later, yes, one week. cant insure with those mods on car. against policy for an induction kit and dv. so how come i had induction kit and full system, cams etc through you guys on my previous car? errr, must be car specific. i will call you back.

3hrs later. we can insure you for CAI, tints but not DV as it greatly increases acceleration. i chuckled.

my question to you guys is, more than likely old topic, what insurers are you through as qute a few of you have some decent mods. renewal date is aug. looking else where.

cheers in advance

while i see why you have told your insurance company about your mods and i do agree with it 100% the only time i dont/wounldnt mention them is when they have no cosmetic or performance difference.
Prime example my dad put a stainless steel exhaust on his scooby told the insurance company and they wouldnt insurue him as its not an OEM part! WTF is that about you get penalised for looking after you car

Dearie me, I find this very frustrating!

You'd think if they don't employ people that can deduce what modified part you are talking about, you'd at least think the insurance clerk's screen would have tickbox options for everything and anything you could possibly declare, mod-wise.

If their insurance price quoting system was set up like that it'd not matter if they knew what a certain valve does, assuming you picked the same name for the part as appeared onscreen in front of them.

This could at least be used for them to give you an initial cover/no-cover response when you phone to enquire (say they'll insure suspension/cosmetic but not engine performance mods) even if it was policy to have an underwriter review the exact impact on risk at some point thereafter to calculate an exact premium.

All, of course, in my humble opinion

Just see the banner above Chris Knott...all my mods and under £400

Just "mirrored" my NCB onto my new project Golf Gti as well, good company to deal with.

Yep, another big fan of Chris Knott here. £550 for all my mods and they genuinely understand the nature of car modding!

Cant recommend them highly enough.

Chris Knott seem to be good for modified octavias, also try Adrian Flux.

When I rang to get my DV put on the policy I was refered to an under-writter too. He asked what it did and I told him is was a valve that was upgraded to a stronger one because of the remap, I emphasised that it was more of an upgrade to a standard part than a modification.

He then said it was fine and sent out written confirmation that I'm covered.

A lot of insurers will accept modifications as long as you phrase it carefully. Don't lie but use terms that emphasise safety, robustness and those kind of things rather than 'it will increase bhp by xx %' etc.

Things that make the car more likely to get stolen aren't great either, I suppose
