Default ECU reconditioning

My S Reg 90bhp TDI has developed what I think is the shudder on returning to idle that VAG admitted would happen to all TDIs with ECUs of a certain serial number . I have been quoted £690 + VAT for a replacement. If the problem is not going to worsen then I don't think it justifies spending the thick end of £1000 on fixing it.

I am looking into having the ECU reconditioned...has anyone got any experience of recon ECUs? Can anyone recommend a firm to do the work?

Also what do I need to do to gain enough access to the ECU to read its serial/part number? Everywhere I call requires this number to give me any idea of whether they can do it at all and if so how much.

Thanks

Ben

ECU is in the same place as the Mk4 Golf (under the scuttle panel); Remove the wipers, then the rubber weather seal then carefully remove the scuttle panel. ECU is then near the middle somewhere and is held in by a fairly simple clip. The other option is to find someone with vagcom who can get the ECU number for you in a couple of minutes.

May not be a refurb but they have all the equipment needed to recode or possibly repair an ECU. It may be possible to get a used one from a breakers, they were around £100 when I enquired.
