| Hey, discovered why you don't see many vRS's in Ireland. Was up the Wicklow mountains yesterday going over Sally's gap. Taking it real easy, already scraped the front spoiler on a rock, come around a corner and BANG. Hit the deck with the sump. Nothing too bad, thank God, more a shock than anything else. Checked it a few mins later, and there's some scrapes on what looks like the sump and the gearbox housing. Problem is, that plastic engine cover underneath got a whack, and the offside mounting on the suspension got shredded to pieces. Any ideas about what to do? Cable-tie it in place, or is it just as easy to replace it? Oh and to add insult to injury, leaving the house this morning, and offside front wheel was flat as a pancake. No visible nails or anything, but changing a wheel at 5:30am on a Monday morning in the pi**ing rain is not my idea of fun!!! Stephen.

| Metal sump guard, it's a skoda part and if you ask a dealer about it they can get you one and fit it. Is about £200 total, but no inconvieniece of having the car off the road when the sump cracks :S

TaviaRS has one of these fitted but I think he said you're more likely to ground it because it hangs lower but..as said...at least it protects the sump.

| Only a small bit, and as said it is a skoda specified part a dealer can order and fit it for you. We were looking at getting a group buy around on here, however waiting on some feedback from somebody who was going to try and get one fabbed for less.

I have the pan and rear mountings sorted, just need to finalise the front mounting (the difficult part). Its in the pipeline but should be a DIY fit and will come in under the parts cost of the Skoda guard. | |

Yuo're just not looking the in right places!!! ![]() Sally's gap is notorious for potholes. You were lucky you didn't loose your sump completely.

Having said that, the most frightening straight I've ever driven along was in the mountains there. It was so bumpy thought I was going to get bounced off the road!

| A couple of years back I seen a guy in a Golf GTi polishing it in a workshop in Blessington, the next day he was back fitting a new sump. He cracked it while heading back over the mountains. That housing under the gearbox linkage in my old car was scraped to bits from spins to Donegal. Myself & Bpm went over the Dublin mountains a few weeks back and the Mk2 felt a lot more comfortable to drive as there was less chance of bottoming out due to the height.

| What car for Irish mountain roads? One of these? ![]() nah, one of these: 1.4 litres of sheer, er.... Hire car! Is it just me or are there a lot of burnt-out cars up there? It must be a hell of a walk back to Dublin for the scallies who leave them there....

| I replaced the plastic sump cover thingy on my old RS, think it was under €30. My current car was less than a week old when the same cover got moderately busted. I haven't bothered replacing it. If you think the RS has a low oil sump, the Alfa 156 is far worse.

| Ah well as bad as the roads seem to be over there I'm sure the scenery makes up for it! Was over there a couple of years back and it's gorgeous. Scenery around a wee remote inn called the fox and hounds or something in Dublin are great too! Hope you don't do anymore damage to the motor

The scenery is nice, not that I could enjoy it, Was trembling with terror that I'd either rip the front spoiler off or whack the sump again around every corder. Most harrowing 30mins of my life. Never going on that road again......
