How much extra does v-power really cost over regular unleaded?

OK I'm not quite such a noob that I can't look at the prices on the pump What I mean is in real terms how much extra is it going to cost me to put v-power in my car compared to regular 95 ron fuel?

Now say the average price for fuel at the moment is 105.9 and v-power is what? 112.9 so 7 pence per litre more. Now if my maf-e-matics are correct thats about 6.6% difference. Now I currently average 30.5mpg which equates to about 15.4 pence per mile in regular petrol.

OK so what is all this rubbish about... well- I know v-power i meant to give better economy but by how much? If my current average was to rise from 30.5 to 32.5 mpg that would completely cover the cost, a little optimistic though. Say it raises it to 31.5mpg which I assume is achievable that would effectively cut the extra cost to a much more stomachable 3.5p/l more and still keep my cost per mile below 16 pence.

So from your wealth of experience, just how much extra economy (if any) is realistic simply from a change in go go juice to v-power on my standard Octy? Answers on a post card to...... well the little box at the bottom of the screen would be great

dont know about MPG but the times i have run my car on 95 the performance has definatly been down. my average MPG is about 23atm with my very heavy foot and new panel filter so like to play and get a little whistle noise going!!!

Arn't vRS meant to run on a minimum of 97 RON ? ? thats what it says in my handbook and on the petrol flap.

I use 97 RON cause thats all i have in my area (would use V power if we had a Shell garage in Alnwick) and i average between 32-35mpg

They run best on 97ron upward but will run fine on 95ron just with reduced performance.

You guys drive around in 2nd gear? I am seeing 36-37mpg with ease and not particularly taking it easy.

40mpg is not unrealistic on motorway drives either - are you just driving around town?

Getting a little off topic but.
I will get around 33 mpg according to inaccurate dash display. some of us have remaps and although its good economy when taking it easy, its poor when thrashed.

i got 42mpg according to dash going to portsmouth and back, and i wasnt exactly driving like miss daisy.

if your car is remapped, do not run it on normal unleaded.

the cars prefer super, but will run on it if standard, but as said, reduced performance.

Malc, where are you getting your figures? My 30.5 MPG is me actually working out my economy. Take my penultimate tank full- Trip comp says 35.6 MPG... actual 31.3 MPG.

Hmmm... I always used to run my car on 97 RON and noticed no difference when swapping back to 95. I think I'll run my current tank of 95 as low as I dare and go for V-Power which is what? 98, 99 RON? I'll try a good few tanks of that and report back with what my nerdy spreadsheet says

Mine was mapped to 98 ron so vpower all the way for me.

I think it's generally just better for the engine...

Worth running a couple tanks of vpower through if you do change lordrobs.

I've only had a single tank of V-Power (money off voucher made it the same price as 95 ) and again I couldn't tell the difference but I'll fully admit that an 80% mix of V-Power and 95 over a single tank isn't exactly a conclusive test

I'll suck it and see for a month or so.

It still won't be a completely fair test though because I'm changing the spark plugs and air filter tomorrow

I did the maths on here somewhere before, and I think VP was economically viable. I'll have a look....

Here it is....

Normal ULG - it works ave 34.5mpg
Tesco premium - lively ave 35.2mpg
V-Power - Much better ave 36.5mpg

BUT

Total Excellium - STUNNING .........AND..............41.1mpg

This was worked out using tankfulls, not too much mixing, and the back of a fag packet.

I really do like the Excellium, but the nearest garage selling it round here is 25 miles away, I don't get it very often. But ULG is good for bimbling about.

Always run mine on VPower and last time i worked it out it gave me another 40/50 miles out of the tank

112.9 !! yeah i wish, i got some the other day was 118.9 This was at a new shell garage which did'nt show the price of v-power, until you selected the hose and then it came up on a digital display!! It's getting silly, may have to use tesco's from now on , though the car seems to run better on the v-power.

eek, still 112.9 at the Shell I was at today and 111.9 on the other side of the city.

In my 1.8T mk1 I used to do alot of motorway driving (company car allowence). If doing a really long run, I could manage 46mpg - and that wasnt driving Miss Daisy!

I never used the onboard MPG, as it was way out. Instead recorded litres in, fill to cutoff, and used excel to work it out.

Over ownership my average MPG worked out at 36 something. even using the technical data from Skoda, that's their claimed max!

Thats really good, my motorway economy is pretty poor. Over a 90% motorway miles tank of fuel I averaged less than 32MPG

I'm hoping that having had it serviced things may improve slightly, the plugs that came out looked pretty second hand but its the first time I've ever changed plugs so I'm not too sure how they should look!

My economy using fill to fill gives around 37mpg on std 95 ron or 35mpg on tesco etc but that is mixed driving.
Managed to get 17mpg while towing that really hurts still it almost pulls the hitch off the van

I used to run my last car on v-power and found around a 9mpg difference and more smiles getting it

I took mine to St Omer in France and back a few weeks ago on a full tank of 95 RON and it felt like a dog (but did have 3 guys and some beer in the back), then a few days after I got back I put Tesco 99 RON in it and it felt like a completely different car

Have been using Tesco 99 RON ever since, especially since I've found a local Tescos that does it for 109.9 per litre.

I used V-Power for two tankfuls before the France trip (got two little Ferrari models ) and while the car felt better than it did with 95 RON the Tesco 99 RON felt better than the V-Power. I think economy wise a tank full of the higher RON petrol will last a bit longer as long as long I take it easy with the right foot.

I get an indicated 34.5 mpg on my daily drive to and from work (18 miles each way, mixture of country roads, dual carriageway and town driving), most I've had out of it was about 38mpg on a long motorway drive.
