MAF Problem returning?

Heya.

Sorry about the constant posts - having loads of problems with this car!

When i bought the 1998 1.9TDI 3 weeks ago, the non-skoda dealer changed the MAF as I'd complained that it was running flat, with instant improvements.

Now it appears to be back - running VAG-COM the airflow very, very rarely goes above 550 - indeed, it seems to get stuck at this value.

Is there anything, apart from the MAF, that could cause this? Dealer's being an

about warranty repairs as the car has already cost him £130 in fixing a RELAY 109 problem cos his engineer didn't know about it, when the car cost 2.5k

Otherwise, where is the best place to get a new MAF from? Based in Pompey, so a local walk in place would be excellent!

Oh - and disconnected the MAF and performance improved - it's currently in a bath of electrical contact cleaner....

Eurocar parts in southampton have them and are cheap compared to a dealer.

Suggest taking your MAF out and cleaning it with something like isoprop. (Take the MAF off, put it in a freezer bag, pour ina bit of Isoprop and give it a shake around, take teh MAF out and let it dry off, then put it back). Obvioulsy done at your own risk but others on here have used this to correct MAF problems.

Other things, I ignore the 40k air filter change on my 1.9TDI and change it a lot more often. The perfomance on mine was attrocious until i changed the air filter.

General Notice to anybody cleaning the MAF.
If the cleaner comes in contact with the sealant, it is likely to perish the sealant. Protect the sealant in something before shaking the MAF around in Contact Cleaner!

This is from experience - i left the MAF standing in a pool of cleaner for a minute and then shook it about to clean it, but having left it for another minute while making a cuppa tea the sealant perished.

I've have therefore had to strip and re-seal the entire MAF using high pressure vulcanised rubber sealant, which is horrible stuff and a pain to clean.

Oh - but at least it cleaned the MAF and it all works again!

what cleaner did you use? I am suprised a little isoprope would rip the sealent apart that quickly.

Maplins Electrician's Contact Cleaner, comes in a spray can.

I can honestly say i have used isoprope on many seals on old car and never had an issue, leccy contact cleaner i havn't used but guess there may be something else in it.

EDIT:

-->> Ideal for removing grease oil,dirt,stains and coating

that would kind of imply to me that it might damage sealant since they are often oil bbased and anythign that can take a good coating off is pretty nasty. Me thinks it isn't jsut isoprope.

This stuff sounds safer as does plain old isoprop:

with that spray stuff could you just hold the maf and spray this stuff in through the middle to clean the maf's sensor thingy?
