The master cylinder will have failed.
It's not a very common problem but not unheard of , especially on very cold mornings.

Cheers Doc,

I remember reading that it could be the case of the plastic tabs that operate the clutch cylinder being broke??

Maybe I'm hoping for the leat expensive option!!

When I last checked a clutch master cylinder was around £46, so it shouldn't be too expensive a repair.

Clutch cylinder, but it needs someone who can look at it to figure out if it's master or slave.
Oh and IME when the one's gone the other frequently goes within the next 6 months (probably due to extra loading from the new part).
