Default Remapping, The Truth?

Ok, back to seriously contemplating a remap.

Being wise to the "If you cant pay, dont play" theory im trying to work out what could go wrong.

Can anyone who has had a remap/power increase and then any kind of mechanical trouble that COULD have been contributed to by the remap let me know.

Naturally it increases wear and tear on lots of bits, but Im trying to work out what impact that actually has and if it should concern me or not.

Clutch - £600
Wheel bearings - £150
Bushes - £300
Brakes - £150 (they wear quicker for some reason )
Insurance - £100 if you are unlucky
Fuel costs increase if you use the extra power
Tyres wear quicker if you use the power

Worst case if you blow an engine and want a new one, £2k

ECU fuelling issue on remapped one - Not sure if remap to blame.

Went back to Jabbasport who flashed it back to standard and remapped my "spare" one (for free), which I've been using trouble free ever since.

Aside from that the only downside I've found is the tendancy to use the loud pedal a lot more, and lack of fuel economy when doing so!

not tooo sure, but remapping could have caused my water pump to die quicker... £400 to fix (includes cambelt change).

On the Octy Octy 4x4,Clutch went at 42000, car mapped at 8000 + variious other mods, currently about 250 bhp but I will add that 6000 of those miles were on 2 Cannonball runs & the car does have a very hard life

Fuel Consumption tends to average around 20 mpg, I have a variable boost controller fitted but it seems stuck on max all the time

On the Octy Diesel absolutely no problems, car is quicker & uses less fuel. has now got about 75000 on it & it also was mapped at around 8000 miles

Both cars were mapped bt Jabbasport

Rear wheel bearing on it's way on mine (I think). More to do with the 18's though than the re-map. Personally I'd expect to see the tyres and clutch wear out quicker than anything else. Saying that though my last pair of Toyos fitted on the front lasted 18k miles which wasn't bad considering...

New clutch at 41K, but then it depends how you drive, I think all those of us who have had engine work done (be it remap or more advanced bits and pieces) find as Stuart points out, that there is a extraordinary urge to use the gas pedal far more than previous to modification.

Coil pack failed the following day (not sure if related - it was a type G coil pack)
Engine management light came on after 3 weeks (still under investigation)

Had H-type coils packs since new....car mapped at 17k....first coil pack went at 40k...a couple of weeks after service.

Not saying anything else...don't want to jinx it all.

I think a lot depends on how you drive....to balance Jon's view his RS also did 150k miles and did 12k worth of track mileage. He also drives like a Granny.......NOT!

Nothing has gone wrong on the 4 VAG (Audi & Skoda) cars I've had remapped by 3 different companies ( 2 petrol, 2 diesel). My Impreza's engine went kaput - but there are LOTS of cases of similar age cars in standard trim having exactly the same result.

My advice - if you go to someone like Jabba, tell them that you want a mild remap, and are more interested in mid-range driveability that top end power (petrol) or outright torque figures (diesel). That way you benefit from the extra performance at a level where your risk of anything breaking is modest.
