Usually the wire from the read coil on the igntion switch to the rear of the instrument panel will need replacing. The wire is around £6 and the steering column shrouds and the instrument panel need to come out.

Excellent advice. My 1998 Octavia SLX TDI had an intermittent problem with the immobiliser. Sometimes the light was flashing and if I tried to start the engine it would turn over briefly then cut out. Three dealer visits later (including fitting a new switch) the problem had not gone away. I ordered a new read coil wire, fitted it myself and the problem has not recurred since. Many thanks.
