Lightbulb TDi problem

Hi I have a 1.9 TDi (110 bhp) Octavia and it has all gone pear shape. I was driving along when I lost all power and now the car sounds like a tank. The car will start but it will not rev. It will get to a max 2,000 rpm and sounds awful. It does sound like its running back through air box. It does have the ESP light on so I’ve ordered a code fault reader but in the mean time does anyone have any ideas where to start. Pennies are tight so I’d prefer not to have to take it to a main dealer. I'm wondering if the Turbo might have given up the ghost. The car has done 120k but it has been regularly serviced.

Any help - tips would be gratefully appreciated.

I had the same symtoms last week on Octavia 90 Tdi.
The timing belt tensioner had failed, making the belt loose and susequently the timing jumped a tooth. Then the engine sounded like a tank and had no power.

If possible try and remove top cover from the timing belt (or just pull it to one side) and see if the toothed timing belt is taut. I would run the engine again if it is obviously loose, as it mght cause more damage.

Unhappy Re: TDi problem

I have checked today and found that the cambelt is loose - looks like the tensioner has failed and the belt has jumped.

Can I reset everything to TDC or does it have to go into a garage to be fixed? The Haynes manual tells you how to find TDC if everything is OK but obliviously this is not the care with my engine.

Can anyone shed any light on this dark hour?

Thanks

Fit a new cambelt and tensioner! If in doubt use a good garage. The cost of having a belt fitted is a lot less than replacing the engine when the belt fails. Cambelts should only be tensioned once.

this is also happened to miy engine about 2k ago, except it had had a new cambelt and tensioer kit fitted like 300 miles before it failed lol, efter closer inspection you could see the kit had been installed wrong, wasnt impressed.

Wink Re: TDi problem

It is the tensioner - I fitted it myself so i know it was done right - I have gone back to the supplier and they are going to replace the belt and tensioner FOC.
Don't know what's luckier me for free parts or them for it not eating the top off my engine.. fingers cross when i put the new one on everything will be back to normal.

Thanks everyone for you advise - i'll keep you posted if it works.. lets pray for no rain this weekend as I'm doing it on the drive...
