| I'm having problems getting a 1999 TD Octy SLX started on these cold mornings - having to churn it a fair few times before she fires. It's done 80k so I was wondering how long glow plugs last before they need replacing?

| have you tried turing the ignition off and back on again so the glow plusg get longer to work? Could be a faulty plug... or a sign of a failing battery - although I would have expected the turn over to sound slower. On my gfs Felicia, it seems that opening the drivers door after unlocking it causes the glowplugs to start their warming sequence...... (it confirms that in the car hand book too!) |

| Thanks mbanes but I don't think its the battery as it seems full of power in other ways. If the plugs turn on every time you open the door couldn't that drain the battery if, say, you're packing the car for holiday and keep opening and closing the door to put things in?

| I guess it probably workes in the same way as the primer pump which primes once the first time the door is opened after the car is unlocked. |

| Your engine will be direct injection so the plugs will only need to be on for a very short time and i would doubt the octy puts it on with the door tbh. 80k is a reasonable life for a set of glowplugs, although that is based on my experience with indirect injection engines which use their glows more than the DI ones. As matt said, try turning the ignition to teh prestart position 2 or 3 times before you try and fire the engine up and see if that helps. If it does then you need new glows. The glows on the 1.9TDI are relatively easy to change, however before you change them you might want to test them first. Before you go testing the things here is an obvious warning: GLOW PLUGS GET VERY HOT VERY QUICK SO DON'T HOLD THE THINGS OR YOU WILL INJURE YOURSELF. You can test them by taking the plug out and cheking it glows (see above warning). You can also use a multimeter to check the supply voltage is correct. This post i made may help. http://www.briskoda.net/forums/octav...ugs#post543672
