Exclamation Traction or Lack of

even though i dont have an Octy RS yet i am still lookin at stuff for it.

some of my friends have the opinioon that if I really start to modify the engine for serious power i am not going to get very good tractioin on quarter miles or when tryin to pull away quickly, the VRs has traction control as standard i tink, but can ut cope with a seruous power tourqe increase

cheers

Umm, I'll stop myself from suggesting the obvious

However, traction control on the octyRS is rubbish, you will turn it off and be gentle with your right foot....

Again, the best bet is decent tyres and a gentle right foot.. you can only put down a certain amount of power through 2wheels.. so measure it out gently from bends or on greasy roads...

i thought the traction control woudl be a god send on the strip....it hinders you more then anything TBH....the best way to get quick times is with traction control off....this means lots of practise before hand to get quick launch no with no wheels spin... baiscally the traction control takes the power off you as you try and pull away hard regardless of if you spinning it pre emps whats happening this can add as much as one second on to your 1/4 mile time....

im only running standard 180bhp may be with 250bhp you can make up the lost time at the other end of the strip...

You'll probably find an Ignis Sport has loads of traction compared to an Octy RS, which is a lot torquier... agree with the other guys, turn it off and do the work yourself.

I find the TC is at is best on damp/icy roads at speeds of 30+ At this speed it is fairly un-obtrusive and gently assists whilst you're nailing it. Below 30 it's a pain in the ***.

I rememebr pulling out onto a damp roundabout on the way home from Jabba. I booted it as I would have previously and the TC said "uh uh I dont think so" and chopped my right foot off - resulting in oncoming traffic nearly clouting my ***!

I sometimes wish I'd saved a little longer and bought a 4x4 monster truck Octy.

i've had the ASR limit the torque before so switch it off if i'm planning a fast launch/manouver.

Saying that the car seems to just power through the ASR now the tyres have about 3mm of tread on them... only in the wet mind...

ASR definitely kicked in whilst I test drove the Furby vRS (standard as demo car). Thing is, it is a front-wheel drive car, so there are limits to what you can stick down.

Sounds like the < 30mph on the Octi behaviour is a little too edgy - wondering if it could be tweaked by vagcom or similar ?

On the size 13s - I suppose you'd have to get some light-weight material or just wear socks (lethal I know )

Racelogic traction control might be worth thinking about if you are serious, since you have an in-car dial from which you can adjust the slip that the system runs closed loop around.

This graph shows that optimum performance is achieved with some slip, whereas factory systems tend to run less than this on the upslope of the graph.

I think I'd benefit from it on my AWD car soon as I go over 450 lbft, as in the lower three gears it can be interesting, and that is with three diffs to sort it all out.

FWD with lots of turbo assisted torque arriving in big non-linear chunks (as with big turbos on small engines) is not fun on road tyres on poor surfaces even in good conditions. Modifications can easily spoil the balance of the car.

You will find that increasing engine output by say 50% will not get you to 60 much quicker than the standard engine because you can't use the power (as pointed out here).

However don't worry about this because fast 0-30 times are not sensible on urban roads anyhow. What you will find though is that (providing the road is smooth and isn't the slightest bit damp) the front wheels will cope with all that a size13 right foot has to offer, providing you are in 2nd gear onwards. Rarely have I found a car that will keep up with this (exceptions Mist. EVO 300+bhp, BMW 330 and a Lambo). Obviously there are lots of other fast cars out there but not behind/infront of me a the time.

ASR on the RS is best switch off unless the wife is driving, try flooring it on roundabouts an the car just cuts out, the same on track.
If you play around you can launch the RS with the min of fuss- as the Tw*t in the 330i found out on Trinity rd earlier this week .
