Default vRS Losing Power & Cutting out...

Hi folks,

I'm fairly new to posting here... I don't have a vRS (Or a Skoda) myself but one of my friends has and he is having a few issues with it, I'm posting on his behalf.

It's a Mk1 vRS (03 Plate) and out of the blue the car has started losing power and cutting out, my friend also said he has tried starting it recently and revving and the car refuses to go above 1K RPM.

He's never had any other issues with the car, and there have been no warning lights showing on the instrument cluster.

Any help really appreciated, I'll feed back any more information if required

Thanks, Chris.

Well, the coilpacks are a known weakness, could possibly be this as a starting point.

Thanks for the reply Liverpool-Lad

I've heard that coilpacks can be an issue in the 20VT engines before, any ideas how we could check out if they are actually faulty without actually buying a replacement?

Is this something VAG-COM would show, I have VAG-COM available if required.

Thanks, Chris.

Hi again folks,

Sorry about the delay in response.

My friend disconnected the MAF and the car started to run a little better - it looks as though that was causing the fault, but met up tonight and reconnected the MAF and went to run VAG-COM.

On starting the car it was terrible, it was very lumpy - lights dimmed etc.

Ran a check on the whole car and found two faults in total.

One - Mass Air Flow Sensor Signal Too Low.
Two - Brake switch ... something.

My friend says the brake lights do not come on at all when pressing the brakes, same with good bulbs.

I cleared all fault codes and immediately - the car appears to run fine again (Apart from the brake lights).

I can't see it staying this way though, faulty MAF I think if it comes back?

Also... does it look like we should replace the brake switch - expensive/easy to fit?

Thanks again, Chris.

Sounds like the MAF needs replacing and the brake switch is goosed.

The MAF problem will return so he needs a new one IMO. And a new brake switch. Have search for instructions on how to change the switch, I don't think it to hard altough I have never tried myself

No problem, thanks for the reply.

I'll advise him to have a look at a new MAF and also have a search with regards to changing the brake switch.

I'd agree with Fatty. These cars have a feature in the EMS which cuts fuel when you brake (and which makes heel and toe shifts nigh on impossible). The same thing will apply to your Ibiza. You'd be quite welcome to hang out here as well as or instead of SeatCupra.

Superb I've heard of this before - so a combination of faulty brake switch and dodgy MAF could be making the problem so bad.

Cheers again, and thanks for the welcome - I'll be sticking around here alright
