Wheel bearing cost?

Sorry for this post, I realise I can get a price from my local dealer, but they're not open at 9pm and I need to know how much cash to get out on my way in tomorrow morning

Does anyone know the price (roughly) of a front wheel bearing from Skoda for a Mk1 vRS?

My O/S bearing has decided to die at the worst possible time

£40 I paid £19.40 for one from an independant supplier and I think about same from GSF

Yep. I paid £12.50 for a pair or rear wheel bearings for the wifes Escort. And today I went to Ford and stumped up £30 for one genuine wheel bearing as I have to do the n/s one again as its droning its nuts off.

I prefer to use genuine parts if possible.

Nothing wrong with that but if they do the job why pay top dollar for genuine item, mine are have been no problem. Also have found parts from GSF first class

I've never used GSF, mainly because there isn't one very close to me. I'm not saying that non dealer parts are poor, I just find that it can be hit and miss with them. I can't speak for wheel bearings, as this is the first one I have ever had fail, but with items such as ball joints, drop linke and shocks etc... I find genuine parts tend to last longer.

Give GSF a try they have a website and you can order online

Nothing wrong with using non genuine parts, unless they fail within 2000 miles like mine did.

I used to have a ford escort that always needed lower arm suspension bushes i fitted cheap ones and they failed very quick i found this with other parts, but when i paid a bit more for the genuine ones they did last a lot longer.

I am going to always try and buy genuine parts unless its things like bulbs or wiper blades

i paid £26 for non gen bearing that was fine, had other side changed under warranty and dealer changed hub/bearing assembly. they said its works out same as labour to remove/replace bearing.so just changed assembly

Turns out that both of my front bearings are dead. Well, one is very bad, the other is on the way... so they're getting done on Friday. I'm going with genuine bearings.

I had to do a front wheel bearing on the wife's Fabia and it was expensive - about £60 or £65 IIRC (VW parts supplier, not main dealer). The bearing comes as an assembly with a huge chunk of hub around it. The Octavia one looked very similar when I went looking in the manual, so I'd be surprised if it was different.

The Octavia 1 is different, its just a bearing. The drive flange and hub are one bit as you say on the Fabia combined with the ABS rotor.

I jacked the car up and spun each wheel, whilst holding onto the coil spring to feel for vibration. I felt some vibration in the N/S and a lot in the O/S. Having never done this before, I wasn't sure how much vibration could be classed as normal. I took it to an independent specialist who took it for a drive and then did the same thing (spun the wheel whilst holding the spring). He agreed that they're both cream crackered. Still, had I just replaced the one, I would have been waiting for the second one to go anyway!

The noise came quite suddenly and then stayed the same for about 400 miles, in the last 50 or so it's started to get louder so I've parked it up until it goes in tomorrow.


Does anybody know about the need to 'run-in' wheel bearings? I remember a friend of mine saying that you should try and keep the car below 50mph for xxx miles. Is there any truth in it? If so, how long should this be done for? I have to drive 500 miles on Monday and don't fancy doing it at 49mph
