| Re: when to cange hydraulic lifters I've never changed them in my life. If I ever have cause to remove the head, or cams, I would leave them in a bath of oil over night, which removes the dirty oil from them. I wouldn't be inclined to dismantle the top end of the engine just for the sake of cleaning the lifters though, unless it was tapping like a mare!

| Re: when to cange hydraulic lifters Are you sure its the lifters at fault? Whats the oil pressure? Sure its not the timing chain?

| Re: when to cange hydraulic lifters There isnt an interval for the chain but it isnt unheard of the tensioner to loose its strength and the chain starts rattling, especially on start up.

| Re: When to change hydraulic lifters? In the first place, my TDi sounds slightly tappetty when the engine's cold and it needs servicing soonish. So maybe it just wants an oil change? Secondly, with the note that I've not done the job, the chain provides a drive from the one cam to the other, and is at the opposite end of the head to the main drive belt. |

| Re: When to change hydraulic lifters? Another thought on this; if hydraulic lifters really do need cleaning or replacing, ultrasonic cleaning, the same as for injector reconditioning! |

| Re: When to change hydraulic lifters? At work (Piper Cams) we advise customer to change followers at 60 to 80 thousand miles. Just as a mater of caution rather than a need to change them. Its because the spring in them gets soft over time. We also found that once a follower had started to "tap" they are un fixable. Some people say to leave them in a bath of oil etc... but we find that in most cases (not all) this wont cure it, not in the long term anyway. That said, if you know you have had some crap go around the engine, something wear out, then cleaning out the crap to free the oilway out can indeed help. I hope this sheds some light on them for you. Kind Regards Garry
