I hae noticed a whining noise on my 1.6 engine like a wheel bearing type noise as if you are blowing down a metal tube. I have been to the garage who have checked the bearings and these are fine the car passed its MOT just a week ago. Is there anything else it could be thats not mot related. Thi sound goes with the speed of the engine but dont think its the gear box as when i put it in neutral and coast the noise is still there. The faster i go the faster the sound and the slower i go the sound slows down. We have a large unused stretch of road and even when i turn the engine breifly off doing around 20mph this noise is still there. Just worried it may be cambelt or waterpump but would like to rule out anything as major with you guys here.

If the noise stays when the engine is turned off then it's not the engine.

Hmmmm, possibly could be a driveshaft bearing gone? Also how old is the car?

I would check the tyres and wheel bearings first.

check the brake discs for wear. the shoes might be rubbing the discs. the last time that happened to the octy i drive, the entire brake kit had to be changed

Done many miles since the MoT? You might have just worn out a pad that still had enough meat to stop the car adequately. Otherwise I'd be suspecting wheel bearing, CV joint, or a stone behind a disc shield.

I think i have found the prob, this whinning sound goes when i slightly move the gear stick, then when i touch it again the whinning comes back untill i slightly move the gear stick again, it does this in all gears, even neutral. I will have a look for stones stuck in the disc plate later on. It did have new front pads around 4 weeks ago and i was told that the discs would be ok for around another 2 brake pad changes. If it is this thing with the gear stick do you think it may be something to do with the gear linkage. Thanks

I wonder. Could one of the selector links be touching something it shouldn't?
