Default '04 vs '07 model year comparisons.

I have a 2004 2.0 TDI Elegance that has just gone in for a gearbox noise inspection.

In its place I have a 1.6 FSI Elegance (Skoda Courtesy Car) and would like to point out some comparisons.

1) 1.6FSI is big disappointment after 2.0TDI in terms of performance - it wouldn't pull the milkman off yer missus!!

2) New car has Stream MP3 HU with AUX connector in arm rest for Ipod's and the like.

3) New car has light on speedo when cruise control is in operation - nice touch previously mentioned in other posts.

4) New car has very pleasant chime when not wearing seatbelt plus flashing red symbol again on the speedo.

5) Trip that I did today - my 2.0TDI averages 60.0+ mpg, 1.6 FSI averaged 39 mpg and reminded me what it was like to have to gear down to overtake!!

I think if you are going to compare the diesel with an FSI you have to match it to the 2.0FSI.

Did you think the newer Octavia was any quieter than your 2004 model? I had a 1.9 hatch on an 06 reg courtesy car which seemed much much quieter than my 05 reg 1.9. I was wondering if they had altered the sound proofing in any way.

ok i'm biased since i have a 1.6, but the petrol does have half the torque of the 2.0 tdi so give it a break?

IMO the petrols get a bit of a raw deal on this site, yes they are not as good on mpg and have less torque than the oil-burners, however, again IMO, they are still good powerplants. less we forget, those of old enough, days of yore when family car was deemed fast if it had 100bhp and did 25mpg, morris marina anyone?

don't anybody flame me as i'm not trying/wanting to start a contentious debate rather i've not posted in a while and i'm on a role right now, peace & love.

I agree. I have the 1.6 FSI Elegance and it's a bit obvious that you are not going to get the same power or the same fuel consumption when compared to a bigger engine and a diesel one.

For me personally, I love my Octavia and is a step up for me compared to the (also very good) 1.4 16V comfort fabia estate I had.

And although I haven't driven an older Octavia, I have to say, it is very quiet inside and very comfortable. Makes journeys much more enjoyable, although that is to offset the noise from the kids
