Bye Bye my vRS!

Today I have traded in my car for a new Honda Civic 2.2 diesel.

I collect my new car on Saturday and say bye to a year and 26000 miles spent with my vRS. Why have I done this? well I will now get 24p/mile from my company and 50 mpg as opposed to 17p/mile and 31mpg I get now as they pay more if the engine is over 2000cc. On my new territory with work I'll be doing 30000 business miles/year and those pennies really do add up.

I will miss my Octavia but I'm also excited about the Civic, I test drove it today and it really is a corking engine.

No doubt I will still lurk on here and post occasionally if that's alright!?

On a more serious note, enjoy your new car. I have had a Honda a few years

Sorry to see you go; pity the ££££ didn't add up that you could have had a vRS TDI.

I presume you have not gone 'soft' and have bought the Civic Sport (Type R not available as a diesel is it?); it is quite a good looking car.

Nice choice of car imo. One of the best drives Ive had this year has been in a Civic 2.2 S type GT. In fact if would have been available in a five door version, I may not now have the order in for my new VRS.

I am confused, your company pays you more to drive a bigger engine? Surely that is not very green? perhaps I am missing something.

Arent they simply reimbursing you more as the bigger engine will (generally) cost you more to fuel?!

No it's not very green but Lee is right in that they are giving more money to cover the "increased" cost in fuelling a larger engine.

However they don't distinguish between diesel and petrol and I'm simply exploiting a loophole in the system in that the 2.2 diesel Civic will give 55mpg and I'll be quids in!

Remember that for cash option drivers the inland revenue allows up to 40p/mile for the first 10k miles and 25p thereafter and you can claim tax relief on the difference between these rates and those your company pays.

Bahnstormer; I've come over all sensible and gone for the SE 5 door, if the Octavia vRS TDI was over 2000cc I would have bought one.

i had a similar conundrum when I bought mine as to whether to get the 2.2 ST TDci mondeo or 2.0tdi elegance/L&K. The octy won even though i get less mileage allowance back (4p per mile)

I was lucky, the vRS TDi was on my company list. I do have to pay a little towards it but given the choice between that and a bland Ford or Audi, I think I made the correct choice!

50mpg from the civic is a tad optamistic imho. I know a good few owners not getting figures like that at all.

I test drove a Type Sgt but found it very underpowered with only 140BHP and preferred the vRS. difference for me is 9p for the skoda and 12p for the civic although I will be seeing the boss to up the 9p per mile on the skoda.

the vRS is due on July 17th

Its not underpowered. Its a different engine which produces its power differently. The torque is less peaky and pulls from a lower rev band giving a smoother pull. Its plenty powerful IMO and Ive just come from 170 bhp!!

Bland Ford - must be, 'cos the equivalent Ford Mondeo ST TDci is something like £23,000! OR a low spec Audi A3 with 140bhp only for the same price as the vRS.

You definitely made the right choice.

Re: my post of the Which? car survey - Honda generally get applauded by Which? but they say that in the medium car class the new Civic has "very poor" reliability at 82%. However, I really liked the 2.2 diesel in the CR-V that I test drove recently.

One owner on civinfo recently posted getting 67mpg on a long trip down a busy M1, most of my miles are on dual carriageways so high 40s should be possible.
