Colour coded door strips

I recently sprayed up a set of grey plastic door protector strips to match the rest of the car as IMO the bare plastic ones look awful

Anyway, here are the results on a freshly cleaned Octavia. Couldn't post the pics when the car was as dirty as it was or else I would have been shot to pieces (sorry Vimto - got the pictures in the end!).









No doubt some will be aware the front and rear bumper strips haven't been colour coded yet. I'll have to see if I can be bothered with the hassle.

The old ones are a piece of cake to get off, 10 minutes and SWMBO's hair drier is all thats required.

Pre heat and prise one end away with a soft blunt instrument (plastic ruler did the job nicely) then aim the hair drier between the door and the strip and pull away from the door gently. The best places to start are the ends that meet the door shut lines.

Parts were:

4 cans of VW diamond black metallic paint (couldn't get Skoda BM round here) 2 cans of standard primer, 1 can of plastic primer and 2 cans of clear laquer. An assorted pack of sand paper and a can of Halfords plastic bumper prep spray to clean the plastic before the painting.

The strips are £30 from a Skoda dealer, the paint and other bits were probably over £30 but I used more than necessary as one had to be re done thanks to one of my cats and some less than dry lacquer

I considered this a while back but someone told me that because they were rubber the paint would peal off after a while did you use special paint or prep? how are they holding up?

They certainly aren't rubber, they are hard plastic with a slight texture which I got rid of with sand paper and elbow grease.

They are holding up fine, no peeling paint but a few minor knocks thanks to the good old supermarket car park.

I used the standard method for plastic.

Plastic prep solution and a proper plastic primer. After this it was a standard painting procedure.

Keying of the various layers is the most important part.

The red bucket and green hose are nice; could you not have used them to clean the wheel-arches?

Its a bit late for you at this stage, but Half-rods have Black Magic paint and those little paint stick / pencil things.

I was only half way through the cleaning process

As mentioned before, I didn't do the front and rear strips but I've got a product on the way that might help them out. I'll post more when I get to use it it'll either be ****e or really good
