| After i have gone for a run in my new vRS and get out and lock the car, from under the bonnet you can hear a slight humming noise for a while like a whirring sound. If you're looking at the front of the car it seems to be coming from below on the left.

| That's what it sounds like to me too, coolings fans do stay on for a bit longer especially if you've just been for a bit of a blast. Nothing to be worried about imo.

| and as a side note, as with any turbo car let the engine idle for a few moments after a run before switching off. This allows the turbine to stop before you starve it of oil. Likewise when you set out, keep the revs low for a while so that oil can circulate round the engine. Steve

| Definately not the fans. It seems to be coming from low down on the left and it's a very faint high pitched hum. I do have a theory that like the old VW turbo diesels they had a small electric pump that circulated coolant around for a few minutes after a run when the engine was switched off.

| I've heard it too, goes off after 3 or 4 minutes with a click. I concur it's not the fans, the noise appears if you turn the ignition on and off again. It's common to 140 and 170 variants. It's a high frequency humming noise similar to xenons when they first start up. I thought it was more from the front of the engine when I tried to trace it.

| I'll have to have a look for that one. I've only ever heard the louder one of the two, it does stay on much longer if you turn on the ignition without starting the engine.

| This is on a TFSI. The TDI may be different. After a run put your head around the front left foglight and it can be heard.

| As per my previous post (post #7 above), the turbo does have water galleries in it, and there is an auxillary cooling pump that operates after engine shut down. The attached document explains it with pretty pictures... |
