| Hi everybody, this is my first post on this very useful site! Now, a question. I intend to aquire a diesel Octavia estate next month. It'll be used for work, 40,000 miles a year, lightly loaded. What I'm after is some guidance on whether to go for the 1.9 or the 2.0 model. It'll be in Elegance trim if that's at all relevant. Economy will obviously be important, where the 1.9 wins. However, refinement is also important, does the 6 speed box on the 2 litre car make for more relaxed cruising? Is the 1.9 "revvy" on the motorway at all, say at a constant 80mph? And difference in road noise, engine noise etc? Finally, power delivery. What's it like? What I'm after is useful midrange torque rather than ultimate power. I currently drive a Transporter van. I used to have the 1.9tdi, 104bhp model, which was slightly underpowered. I resolved this by fitting a Van Aaken tuning box, which totally transformed it - the low to midrange torque gains were especially impressive, and I was very happy! I eventually changed it for the 2.5 litre V5 130bhp, which I superchipped to 170bhp and 400 Nm. It's fast, but I have to say the bottom end torque is not that impressive - I almost prefer the tuned 1.9! So, does the 2.0 need to be revved a bit to get the power out, or is it there in spades when accelerating from say 1500rpm in top? Anyone got any experience of the 1.9 with a tuning box, and any recommendations? Thanks in advance! |

| Welcome to Briskoda ![]() If you want a more relaxed cruise on the motorway you have to opt for the 2 litre diesel, it's offers effortless overtaking ability and the torque available means less gear changes. The peak torque is a little higher than you would expect, I find it most useful at about 2200-2500 RPM. At 1500 rpm there is noticeable turbo lag. My old 1.9 PD130 had more grunt at lower revs than the 2.0 unit.

| Personally out the two engines I prefer the 2.0tdi, more relaxing to drive but got the power on tap when you need it. However if economy is a big deciding factor...go for the 1.9tdi and get it mapped!

| An alternative to 2.0 might be to get the 1.9 with the DSG automatic box. At least take it out for a test drive - I just love the DSG, and am eagerly waiting for 2nd Jan when we receive our 1.9 DSG elegance... |

| was going to say if you want more drivability and 6 gears its gotta be the 2.0tdi. but then i thought about the dsg 1.9tdi. getting it rematted to deliver more power, you have 6 gears and its auto for all the time you will spend in traffic jams ![]()

| Hi there Also this is my first post in this fine community. I bought a Skoda Octavia II 2.0 Tdi Combi (Estate) Elegance 3 weeks ago. This is my first Skoda, IŽve had Fords for the past 20 years, and getting bored with the lack of comfort. Driving my new Skoda very carefully for for the first 2.500 km, I know there`s lots of extra power, when I need it. IŽll definitely recommend the 2.0 Tdi, and the 6. gear youŽll appreciate when the motorway isnŽt jammed up. At least here Elegance is equipped with front and back parking sensors, jumbo box between front seats, Climatronic and roof compartment for sunglasses, don`t know if that`s global, and paying 180 % extra on car taxes, I better love all the extra comfort I can get. |

| I drove both, and went with the 2.0TDi. The extra power and the 6th gear really do make a difference. I have seen 60MPG on a nice steady run, lowest I have seen is mid 40s in stuck traffic.

| I have had a 1.9 TDi PD Elegance for nearly three years but have recently changed to a 2.0 Ambiente. I much prefer the 2.0 version, much smoother and quieter sounding engine (16 valve as opposed to 8). Superb power delivery with the added bonus of 6 speed gearbox. I went for the Ambiente model this time because I had many silly faults with the Elegance. Those being reverse park sensors faulty, numerous faults with the dual zone climate (flaps sticking, there are eight of these !), and erratic rain sensitive wipers. If fuel economy is most important to you then the 1.9 is going to be best bet and can achieve an average mpg of 52/53 mpg. The 2.0 will be achieving around 45/50 mpg. I tried a Ford Focus and a Mazda 6 diesel before going for another Octavia and even with the faults I had, the Octavia wins hands down !! |

| Driven both and the 2.0 litre is the best option ...it's not that the 1.9 is bad or anything it's just that the 2.0 is that much better

| Funnily enough, the Mazda 6 diesel estate was the other alternative I was considering, though I haven't driven one as yet. You obviously felt the Octy was that much better, I'd be interested to hear why? Just useful feedback! Had a quick look on Auto Trader and there seem a few decent 2.0 tdi Elegance models at reasonable money at the moment, so it's looking good . . . . |

I drove the 121 and the 143bhp versions of the Mazda 6 and did not think that it had the grunt of even the 1.9 TDi. The interior is also very shiny plasticky with smatterings of silver painted trim, looked a bit cheap. At least the Skoda has a feel of Audi / VW quality about it. The 2.0 TDi Octavia is a joy to drive with the eager to pull all the time engine and the slick 6 speed box ( sorry i'm begining to sound like a saleman !! ) | |
