Happy Christmas to my Wife - '06 VRS

Having been registered on here for just over 2 years I thought i might make a post. I was looking at a Mk 1 vRS a couple odf years ago as a replacement for a subaru but never got around to buying. Now I am waiting to pick up (on Saturday) a 12,000 mile '06 plate Occy vRS for my wife.

She has been running a 1998 Audi A4 TDi for the last 4 years and has covered just over 72,000 miles in it so time for a change.

Just a few questions for now though

1. What economy are people actually seeing from the Occy2 Petrol vRS in day to day use?

2. We will be using it to carry the dog occasionally, is the plastic lipped boot liner worth investing in?

3. The car is fitted with 18's. What sort of price are the tyres?

4. Is there anything else I need to know about these. I ahve read loads on the forums but a list of bullet points would be a godsend.

You'll love it!

Petrol isn't too bad, I've seen as much as 40mpg when driving carefully - but where's the fun in that.

Expect minimum £100 per corner for rubber really.

Mine is just coming up for 12000 miles. Watch out for the annoying little rattles and creaks but apart from that nothing special.

Just done the rubber on mine at £96 per corner.

I see between 27 and 32mpg on my daily commute.

Your suggestion for the boot liner sounds reasonable but I cannot confirm either way.

The average fuel economy I am getting is around the 26mpg mark but I do a lot of short journeys and tend to have a bit of a heavy right foot. Driven 'sensibly' and you'll get 32-35mpg.

As for tyres, for a decent make then expect to pay over £100 a corner but you can pick up budget brands for about £70.

I'm not a dog owner so can't really comment on the boot liner but I suppose it makes sense to get one.

The Good Things:-
Fantastic performance with amazing torque (especially with a remap )
Get the factory satnav from ebay for about £350 (£1,400 option from Skoda), it's a nice mod that most on here have done.
Retro-fit cruise available from VRStu if you want it.
Very good ride & handling, infinately better than the MkI.

The Bad Things:-
Mine uses oil like it's going out of fashion so keep an eye on it (yours may not be so bad!).
There are known rattles which can be irritaing but the dealer has fixed most of mine.

That's about it really and I'm sure you will enjoy the car

Seriously though, I can only answer your second question, and it's yes. I've had the plastic boot liner in my Mk1 Octy vRS since new (02 plate) along with the dog guard, and it really has saved the interior of my car from the mud and muck that come with dog ownership.

Regarding carrying your Dog about, i thought about the dog liner as well when i bought mine but didn't bother in the end, we have an Alsation/Retriever cross so she is a fair size and i just take the parcel shelf off and plonk her in the boot, i make sure the rear headrests are raised to there maximum though just to avoid the temptation she gets to join me up front.
It works okay but i only have to do it once in a while as the dog lives with the folks so whether you'd want to do what i do on a more permanent basis i don't know.

Thanks for all the replies. Carrying the dog will be an occasional thing as I drive a Nissan Navara so we usually take that when we go away with the dog however wife has a bun in the oven and doesn't appreciate the bumpy ride offered by a 4x4 on mud and snow tyres at the moment.

I have been told elsewhere to watch the oil too. Any one care to share usage quantities?

Tyre prices don't seem too bad either, we have agreed with the dealer that if tyres are worn to 4mm or less he will replace them FOC on collection and with the car being on variable servicing if the service light comes on before the end of March it gets services FOC too.

According to the mfa I have averaged 32mpg over the last 1168 miles, tyres depending on brand can be as low as £100 ish per wheel.

I have a boxer and a vRS Estate. The boot is holding up quite well to the dog - just shoved a couple of old towels in there. I did go for the dealer-fit dog guard.
What the dog does mess up is the "scratchy" plastics back there - stuff a boot cover wouldn't help with. The "slidey-outy-hidey" wotsit and little removeable shelf thingy are now permanently out of the car to avoid further damage.
A plastic boot cover would be pretty uncomfortable for a mutt, but would probably be good comedy value - get a friend to tape the dog sliding around the rear while you drive and you'll get some gubbins paid for by You've Been Framed...

Watch dog's nails on the rear bumper - train it to not jump in or out before you have old towel in place

We have ordered one of the boot trays from Skoda and will see what it is like when we pick the car up. I will be cutting a bit of old carpet to the shape of the boot tray (or boot if I don't buy the tray) to stop the dog sliidng around.

As for comfort he has no issues in the back of the Navara, I just throw an old duvet in for him.

I have had my octy vrs since August, and have put about half a litre of oil in, which i put in 4 weeks after i picked the keys up, and havent put any in since so thats not too bad.
I have a dog, so i line the boot with a sheet of rubber matting and have a roll up mat that clips to the stowage eyes that are just inside the boot, and it rolls out over the bumper to protect it from getting scratched. I got it from a mate of mine that got it with his vauxhall, as he had a dog at the time. I have used it in my last two mk4 golfs and has saved the bumpers from alot of damage. I dont have a dog guard though as my dog dosent tend to try and get over the seats.
At the moment my car dosent seem to be getting very much to the gallon about 22mpg going into town roughly. Longer distances i get better mpg though, its between 36 and 40 so i cant grumble with that.

1. Fuel consumption - going to work about 32-34mpg (its mainly on good A1 roads at quiet times) but obviously lots of clog and anchor stuff will bring that down to upper / mid 20's.
2. the dog issue - I've put a large plastic dog basket in the back of mine, its hard wearing and easy to wash also the sides prevent mud/ slobber / hair getting everywhere (cost £25 rather than £200 for the genuine thing from Skoda)
3. Tyres - I've not put any on my Octy yet - the originals have still got plenty of meat on them after11k miles, but previously I had a golf GTi which also had 18"s. As there are now more and more cars with them fitted they are becoming less of a specialist thing so the price is coming down, shop around and you'll get decent ones for £80 a piece.
