Question Ipod in new Octy?

Apologies if this is a repeat, but has anyone fitted an ipod into their new Octy yet? I want to do this myself, but dont know where to start. I have looked on the ICE forum, but thick old me just gets blinded with science. I have seen these Dension things in Halfords and wondered if they are any good and if anyone has got one and if they got Halfords to fit it, as i am rubbish at such things!
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You maybe rubbish, but so am I and I managed it. It really is a plug and play job (check compatibility!), just have to get to the back of the stereo and then feed the wire round to wherever you fit the dension cradle.

Also Halfrauds would get some 17 yr old to do it and charge you £100 for the priviledge (if they are still doing free fitting???)

I got my Dension ICE link plus from ebay for £50 delivered and had it uop and running (thanks to Briskoda) in about an hour...

Hi thanks for the quick reply mate. Plug and play job eh? Hmmm, normally ends in disaster for me! Sorry for sounding thick, but what do you mean by check compatibility? Is it easy to get to the back of the stereo? Was your Dension second hand from ebay?
Cheers

There is a genuine Skoda kit which doesn't have the cradle of the Ice Link.

Yes i checked out your web page last night Stu, not sure about it not having a cradle though. Where would it live? In glovebox? Not easy to access for operation.

I agree, I would go for the full icelink. I posted really so that you could get an idea of the kit contents.

Just make sure you get the right connector to fit your head unit. The older Stream Hu's use the old symphony type changer connection. The new streams use a quadlock connector insert plug. The same connections are in there so you can modify the plug if required tho.

Yeah as said above - check it (ICE link plus) fits your headunit - it does fit the symphony units accross the VAG range but I dunno about the new octy...

As for ebay - £50 second hand. It comes with a cradle and honestly it wont be hard to fit. If need be your dealer will no doubt do it??? for a small cost...

The ICE link plus also needs a sleeve insert to hold a nano or a mini iPod... But i have the nano and make do...

I got a cradle off a market stall that sells mobile phone gear. IPOD fits in the cradle, slot in the charge lead, plug unit into Cig lighter and tune radio onto 88.1fm. Your now up and running.

Takes as long to fit and set up as reading this post.......and just as complicated. All in for £14.99

Sounds very similar to the iTrip or Belkin Tunecast.

I doubt that you'll ever get caught or are really bothered but these devices are illegal in the UK hence why they aren't marketed by major manufacturer's. You need a licence to transmit on FM in the UK.

If you get the Skoda kit, your head unit will control your ipod, search the forum for 'mp3' for more info

Dension looks good IMO too.

The ICE link plus does this too, but also comes with a cradle and can be had for about 50 notes... AFAIK - the skoda one doesnt come with a cradle?

I can't comment on the itrip, but the one I got sounds good. I have no complaints.

the dension fm link is different from the itrip as it doesnt actually "broadcast" the music to the radio it plugs into the ariel socket and hence they are legal to use and be sold in the UK

Is the Dension FM thingy able to play tracks from your ipod or does it just transmit radio broadcasts? I have looked into the itrip option before but dismissed it due to living in the highlands reception can be patchy in places.
Thanks for info so far guys.

it plays tracks from your ipod its only the way that it connects its different, it doesnt broadcast over fm so radio reception isnt problem. You get a docking cradle and the control unit, this unit plugs into the ariel at the back of the radio you then tune into the desired frequency and the music from your ipod then plays through your radio. Its not perfect though as i think you get a a little bit of hiss which can be noticible during quieter music tracks.
