Default Octy VRS TDI vs Fabia VRS

A motorway slip drag against a Fabia VRS got me wondering which has the better in gear and power to weight ratio. I started off behind but got out in front but could have been more to do with a suitable gap in traffic than anything else. Still it got me thinking as it came past me a few moments later and charged off into the distance. I did let it go - I must be getting old...

Has anyone got in gear times for both or first hand experience?

Nope,

But i would have thought std vs std the Octy would have the legs... It has got an indicated 40bhp more...?

Stock Vs Stock I would say the Octy II would win it due to the better power to weight.

Once you put in the twisties the Octy II TDI VRS should nail the fabia as is has a much better handling chassis and suspension set up as well as a better balance of weight.

All IMHO of course

if you take the quoted figures for kerb weight for Octy and Fabia and quoted bhp for both you will find the fabia has 1bhp/kg more than the Octy
(i worked it out a couple of months back when i test drove it)

Not sure about that! I calculated;-

Fabia vRS is 1315kg with 130bhp to give 100 bhp/ton

Octavia vRS TDI is 1540kg with 168bhp to give 112bhp/ton

Also maunfacturer's performance figures back this up;-

Fabia vRS 0-62 in 9.5sec and Vmax 128mph
Octavia vRS TDI 0-62 in 8.5sec and Vmax 140mph

So on paper Octy should win but on the road it is often a case of "it ain't what you drive but the way that you drive it!"

IMHO if you drive a slightly lesser car at 10/10ths of its ability and the other driver is driving a slightly better car at 9/10ths or hesitates - you're ahead....

Ah yes, I agree "it ain't what you drive but the way that you drive it!".

Until recently I would 'beat up' many a faster car in my Fabia 1.4mpi just by driving it better - looking ahead, anticipation etc.

Was it YOU in the Fabia vRS perhaps?

Same figures i went with hence my comment, but I definitely agree it's a lot down to the driver.

I have beaten a Cooper S and an Evo off a roundabout because they come piling in, slam their brakes on then have to start all over again to get up the speed rather than just approaching more slowly than carrying the speed. Both these cars will absolutely cream mine on paper... and in fact did once they had got the speed back up lol.

I remember in my fun days at uni, I had a Corsa 1.2 and having a race with a Peugot 406 Coupe 2.0 along the road from Wolves to Staffs. I started ahead, and kept ahead!

He just couldn't carry his speed through the roundabouts! All down to the driver

Bearing at mind, this was in early hrs of the morning and no cars were in-sight!

Probably wouldn't drive like that again! Esp as I like my license!!

the kerb weights i found were from the owners manuals of both cars
Fabia kerb weight about 1280 kg
Octy 1580kg

il let you add it all up

Whatever. If it comes down to 5 or 10 bhp there will be nothing in it, and as said numerous times before a dodgy gear change or passenger will have more of an effect...
