vRS diesel - What should I know?

Am considering buying a 6 month old vRS diesel.
Is there anything I should be looking out for / checking?

Am trading in my EVO VIII (18 mpg) for something slightly more frugal!!

You may find it a little slower than your Evo mate but by no means slow.

Make sure you like it before you buy it!!

You will notice a massive differance between the two and it may not suit you. Don't discount the petrol model either.

I'd consider it... not that the TDI is pant's

If your not doing loads of miles the petrol could well be the car for you. Otherwise general things like servicing, and level of toys. I would think the flywheel issue should be resolved by now, but check anyway.

Why not test drive both and see which you prefer.

You should defo test drive both - very different engines but both very good. I test drove a VRs TDi for a day and to be honest I wouldn't be disappointed if I had to switch from the petrol - similar levels of performance.

I get the impression that you may well be swaping cars in the none to distant future Jonno?

I think I will hang onto my petrol VRs for a time yet to be honest - the fuel savings would be outweighed by the cost of changing.

Probably wise... the way things are going owning any decent car these days petrol or diesel means £££££££'s - I don't think I'd be much better off with a TDI

I'm considering the oil burner because of the 50 mpg and much much lower Car Tax (bearing in mind the budget we've just had). Also would consider a re-map at a later date when warranty expires. Can the 170 tdi be remapped?
Another BIG issue is that I dare not leave the EVO anywhere at night in public because it attracts the wrong type of attention!

Don't go getting yourself all excited about 50mpg from a vRS TDi mate - you won't.

Well, depends on the type of driving. If you pootled along everywhere you would get 50 mpg out of it, expecially run in. However as noted by Stu above, don't expect 50 mpg from sprited ownership. Expect about 40 mpg plus or minus 3-4 mpg depending on weight in car, tyre pressures and types of run (long or short).

Example I get anywhere bettwen 44 Mpg and 36 Mpg dependin on my journey.

40 mpg is about right, with bouts of spirited driving.

As I understand it, the 170 doesn't map particularly well (could be wrong but IIRC something to do with the DPF).

I managed low 30s in the one I ragged around for the day

I think the re-maps are getting better, so by the time it out of warranty there should be some good ones about.

On my 15 min journey to work, which goes through 60 limits to 30 limits and back again with a few junctions thrown in, I can manage 47 mpg if I drive sensibly and don't accelerate hard. On motorway runs of 100 - 120 miles I can achieve around the 44 mpg. That's using cruise control at an indicated 77 mph.

And yes with some spirited driving low 30's are on. I still think that's pretty good, what do you petrol chaps manage on similar drives?

Mid to high 30s with very restrained driving, 10mpg when driving like I stole it, and anything possible inbetween

10 mpg! Swmbo would have a fit if I had that figure. That's why I like the diesel.

I reckon I could get 50's out of mine if I stuck to a nice A road and not going above 60.

Its not easy getting 10mpg though, that takes a level of committment.

To be honest, fairly brisk driving gets high 20s.
