| What Tyres? Octy vRS Bit of a newbie when it comes to tyres so need some advice... Want to buy them from http://www.blackcircles.com/ Size I need is 225/40 R18 92Y I put that in and get a few choices, I dont really want to go over £130 each. I was going to go for Toyo Proxes T1R's but that doesnt appear to be an option on the list it comes up with. I currently have Continental Sport Contact 2's on the car (as standard) they have only lasted 13k miles tho. Just some opinions on the tyres they have available, I need mine replacing asap was going to buy them and have them done for monday. Cheers Pete. |

| Re: What Tyres? Octy vRS Falkens 452's seem to get rated highly, and are pretty good value for money. Also, at your budget you should be able to get Goodyear Eagle F1's which are also very highly rated but more expensive. |

Think I paid £280 for 4 225/40/18's brand new off Ebay. 6 months down the line, and I wouldnt go for them again tbh I dont find them to be grippy enough The next set I am going for would be something like Goodyear Eagle F1's, even though they are much more expensive I will never pick tyres because of price again Cheers Damo

| Briskodian | Re: What Tyres? Octy vRS I recently swapped from Conti 2's to a set of the new Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric. Much better in every department and managed to get them fitted at a local garage for £104 a corner. They were also the highest rated tyre in a recent group test done in 'Evo'. |

| Re: What Tyres? Octy vRS Personally I have been converted to Event Tyres over the last year and quite a few guys on here speak highly of them. They fitted Michelin Pilot Exalto 2 to my vRS when new and I now use them for my Company Cars (I run our fleet). they are price competitive, very efficient and have a good range of tyres, including for you Toyos. here is a match for their 225/40 18 listing;- Online Quotation - Event Mobile Tyres - We Come To You Having said the above I am currently running Vredestien Ultrac Sessantas (came 2nd to the Goodyear Eagles in Evo's 2007 tyre test) that I bought from Mocom Racing (found them through Scooby.net) as here;- Mocom Racing - Performance car and trackday products or they can be bought from Elite Direct tyres, full match for 225/40 18s here;- Bridgetones Tyres, Pirelli Tyres, Michelin Tyres, Dunlop Tyres, Goodyear Tyres, Toyo Tyres, Yokohama Tyres and more... I hope that all helps.

| Re: What Tyres? Octy vRS What are you criteria apart from cost? ie Longevity Vs Grip. My vRS estate still has the original pilots on at 37500 miles! Grip is not great though when giving it a bit of welly. Cheap tyres can wear much quicker so cost more in the long run. Just my thoughts. Bob

Are they genuinely lacking in wet grip or is it a case of it being generally good but relative to dry grip its poor?

Both these tyres do suffer in the wet though, although on my black Octy they do have to cope with 350+ horses![]() Phil

| Briskodian | Re: What Tyres? Octy vRS I have tried many tyres over the years and always come back to Goodyear Eagles. I really don't think there is anything better for grip in most conditions. Having said that any tyre is a bit of a compromise and the weak spot of the Eagle is when road surfaces are just damp, when they are not that good. They're fine in the dry and when it's properly wet, but I think it's the lack of any sipes which causes the poor damp road performance. Of course this is probably one of the reasons they're so good in the dry, thus demonstrating how it's impossible for a tyre to be a true all-rounder. They tend to be slightly more expensive than the cheap brands, but not as expensive as Michelin equivalents. The Michelin Pilot Sports are also pretty good but IMHO not as good as the Eagles. Taken all in all I don't think you can go wrong with the Eagles as long as you are aware of their one area of slight weakness. |

| Briskodian | Re: What Tyres? Octy vRS I've the older vRS estate running on 205 55 r16W used to have Dunlop SP2000E all round which would do 20k on front and 40k on back - motorway driving. Just changed to BF Goodrich which look smart with a good trick tread but they're a lot noiser at low speed (less than 20mph). Got mine for £60 each, fitted and balanced etc and was told that they would last longer than the Dunlops so time will tell - they cost the same as the Dunlops. Hope this helps |

| Re: What Tyres? Octy vRS I'll also add some input here too. I'm running a pair of Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymetric - got them to replace the dangerously bad OE fit ContiSport 2 that were on the car when I got it. The other pair of tyres are Vredestein Ultrac. Tyre size is 225-45/17 Extra Load. I've been a long time Bridgestone fan, been using them for the past 3 cars, RE720, Turanza ER300, RE050, RE050A. This time I went for the F1-A on the back of the excellent reviews they received. I've driven 6000 miles on them so far, and really I'm not impressed. So unimpressed the Goodyears are now on the back, and the much cheaper Ultracs are on the front now. They've pretty much equal grip, better steering feel and marginally better precision on the motorway. The F1-A is also considerably noisier. Treadwear on the F1-A is probably what I would have expected from the RE050A I'm used to (down to 3mm within 10-12k). Don't get me wrong, the F1-A is a good gripping tyre, but really they're not worth the £25 premium each over the Ultracs which last longer, grip similarly, and are quieter.

| Re: What Tyres? Octy vRS just bought some Avon zz3 tyres from tyre-shopper.do.uk (fitted at local national tyres depot - you choose whether you want the tyres mail order or fitted at a local dealer in the scheme) They were direct spec replacement, so 225 40 r18 92 y 86 each fitted (the tyres are delivered direct to your chosen dealer on your chosen day am/pm) They seem to be good tyres from reviews (and the fact the are oem for Bentley / rolls Royce etc) - most importantly they have a sexy tread pattern!

Sexy tread pattern? Ultrac Sessantas are sexier (and Giugiaro Design). ![]() Bit more expensive though around £100 each and not as easy to get hold of.
