Although it’s of no direct help I think the underlying reason why so many of the computer parameters are difficult to set (on many modern cars, not just those by Skoda) is the syntax of the handbook. In Skoda’s case it reads as though put together by a Slovakian who might both speak and write excellent English - but who is not a native-born speaker and has not grasped the nuances of expression we all take for granted. Where a simple, straightforward explanation is required he (or she) manages only to confuse the issue by the use of overblown, inexact and often rambling sentences. If a simple-to-follow, logical sequence of operations is required instead of explaining this by the use of one or two “worked examples” every possible combination is covered, linked (of course) to an obligatory “safety lecture” in case anyone sues. Naturally, in trying to cover their backs, the company achieves exactly the opposite effect to the one intended – a difficult-to-follow handbook that will, sooner or later, be the direct cause of an accident because it has been either misunderstood - or more likely thrown aside as being impossible to decode. .

Are you trying to say the handbook isn't very well written, Tony?
