Unhappy Crash this morning on way to G'Wood

Despite the snow this morning me and a mate decided to go to Goodwood. The snow was realy bad, even on the motorways and especially on the a roads. When we reached the A286 (I think), limit was 50 but even in the 4x4 I wasn't going to push more than about 30. We'd just been passed by a 5 series BMW which then ran onto the offside verge, lost control and rolled through a sign and into the barrier. I pulled up on the left to cover his car and the people behind me stopped too. (I took the last two photos after the emergency services turned up.)

The guy was trapped in the car and we couldn't get the doors open because of the deformation of the roof. Services were called and arrived within about 10 minutes. Before they arrived, I was talking to the guy through a slight opening in his door. I was f'king cold so he must have been far worse. I did my best to comfort him, keep him occupied and calm until the fire crew took over. They thanked us and asked us to sit in our car whilst they got him out.

We did eventually make Goodwood but thats for another thread..

Probably the A24 near Buckbarn, the 286 has no dual bits on it.

I'd have kept him warm by lighting a fire near his pile of rubbish... only joking

Darn - must have been scary for that guy as well, and glad he's ok at the end of it all. Sure he overstepped his and the car's abilities but it could have been so much worse.

Glad all is well with everyone and good job on helping out

Re: Crash this morning on way to G'Wood

Some people really dont do themselves any favours by failing to drive to the conditions.

Nice job on stopping and helping, and glad everything turned out OK.

Oh dear, sounds like he was driving like the stereotypical BMW driver.

Good on ya for helping.

Re: Crash this morning on way to G'Wood

I can't quite believe some of the comments in this thread.

As the situation presented itself, yes, the guy got it wrong and crashed his car. It's easy to underestimate the severity of driving conditions, especially if you are following other vehicles.

A classic example is driving in heavy fog on the motorway or on a DC. People overtake or press to go a little faster, only to realise that when they get to the front, erm... you can't actually see anything, so they slow down. You end up with a plug of vehicles, all of which can't see far enough ahead to be safe, nor are they a safe distance behind the car in front.

Thumbs up to the OP for stopping and seeing that the BMW driver was still in one piece.

J.

Re: Crash this morning on way to G'Wood

I was outside the local crash repair place today when a smashed up 57 Plate 5 Series turned up on the back on the recovery truck. It must be the stereotypical Merc / BMW / Audi drivers who think weather conditions don't apply to them.

Then again I was pussy footing around this morning (my car is really bad in the snow!) and I was sure the woman in the 206 behind me wasn't going to stop in time.

Re: Crash this morning on way to G'Wood

You did the right thing, good for you. Hope the BMW driver was not hurt and will learn by his disregard for the weather conditions.

It's not nice coming across a road accident before the emergency services get there. I encountered one some years ago, unfortunately one person died in hospital later on.
