Default Sandblasting

Quick one for someone in the know.

What do you actually use to sand blast wheels? Just found out that the old mans compressor will run a gun and they are only £20 from machine mart but what the heck do i put into it?

Will some sharp sand be good enough Oh an also how much would i need to get 4 wheels done.

Cheers
Matt

There are hundreds of different kinds or medium for blasting, some are not suitable for all types of metal.

Do you know what they use for alloy wheels then Ross?

I havent found much apart from that you can use Aluminium Oxide and plastic balls as Babs said but there is nothing specific

Glass beads for soft alloy polishing IIRC, check on ebay you can usually get a 25kg bag for about 25 quid and they have a selector chart for the type of medium.

Heres their blurb from one advert

"Description: Glass bead is used for honeing or polishing surfaces it brightens and polishes aluminium and brass and removes weld burns from stainless steel

Aluminium Oxide is one of the finest sand like products for stripping or giving an etched surface for paint & powder to adhere to (stick) and the fast removal of paint and other contaminates leaving a non contaminated etched finish

Steel Grit is without question one the best heavy duty reusable blasting materials on the market for all your blast cleaning or refurbishment requirements. Being a heavy material it is used in pressure pots and cabinets but not suction pots and cabinets. This dust free material has a very very long work life to give outstanding results each and every time. It is used for the commercial stripping and cleaning of metal products to an SA2 or SA3 standard of finish

Steel shot is widly used for honeing and for cleaning metal products to give a natural cast Iron finish using automatic wheel throwing shotblasters, not to be confused to air blowing machines. It can also be used in manual hand blast cabinets (pressure versions only) "

Thanks for that info.

Id say though that Aluminium Oxide would be whats needed to strip the wheels back to metal
