I'd also draft a nice letter to the so called mechanic who can't find the fault but keeps taking money from you.

| MAF would be a good place to start, IMHO

| That's the problem nobody knows, but we know that :the cambelt needs changing = £350 the alternator "probably" needs changing = £150 and the engine management light is on saying fuel bank one is running too lean cost of fixing who knows cos we don't know whats causing it, personally we think its a setting which is now incorrect due to the revo trial but whether we are right or not we don't knowunfortunately we just don't have £500 to put back into the car, it has had an enormous amount of money spent on it in the past 17 months though and we will be gutted to see it go

| maf sensor = £100, something we just don't have i'm afraid, and the maf sensor has only just been replaced, however you could be right as the dealer has told me that he has put maf sensors in the car before which have come off the shelf broke, so maybe thats the cause, we just dont have the money to go investigating, i have lost two weeks self employed wages (two different jobs so four weeks really) trying to sort it out and i just can't keep doing it ![]()

| Sadly the CamBelt was probably always going to crop up. I doubt the running too lean fault is any more serious than a split hose or indeed a duff MAF. 18619/P2187/008583 - Ross-Tech Wiki If the MAF was fitted by Skoda then it will have a 1 year warranty. If they suspect it then get them to put another on. What's the problem with the Alternator?

| His earth lead gets hot, and has already melted one of the things that sits on the battery. I think its an earth problem between the block and the car body, what do you think?

| do you know i honestly don't know whats wrong with the car, we have been passed from pillar to post with it, skoda blame the stereo, the stereo shop blame skoda, skoda blame revo, revo blame something mechanical, i haven't got a clue where to turn now and we just haven't got the funds to carry on doing it. I had it booked in at awesome tomorrow morning but had to cancel as i was relying on money coming in today which hasn't, we don't actually know what is wrong with the car as nobody will give us a straight answer, maybe its none of the above and is something else entirely?? who knows, its a very difficult decision but i have also now lost faith in the car as i have done so many times before with different cars, i just don't feel right when driving it, it used to be fun but now i am scared to hear another noise, i know this is down to how it is at the moment and i probably would regain confidence in it eventually but i just aren't in the mindset to keep struggling on and financially we can't. I wish the outcome on this could have been different and i am sure this car will be a joy for somebody else one day i just don't know what to do. On a different note we will be putting the car back to standard so have quite a few bits for sale if anyone is interested ![]()

| Whilst I can sympathise with your feelings based on your dealers experiance, I don't think they are all like that. Given your financial position with the car, if there is even the slightest chance that the MAF is suspect then either you'll be buying one yourself or you could relent and get them to swap it out. As I said it should be FOC.

his reason for not putting a 110 amp as he should have back in?..............."because the book said it was a 50 amp" now forgive me if i am wrong but aren't mechanics meant to be fully trained before they go touching peoples cars, if it was something major maybe they would have to look it up in a book but surely they should at least know what fuses go where? i am soooo sick of trying to figure this one out its unbelievable, have spent hours on the net and all i keep finding are more things that could be wrong, spent hours going back and forth from garages and all i get from them is "he did it" "he did it" playground antics between them all ![]()

| I am sure there was a known problem with the connectors and a lead melting on Octavia I A4 cars. I can't seem to find anything at the moment but pretty sure there is a free modification.

A faulty MAF will tend to under-read the airflow, so the ECU is being told there's less air entering the engine then there actually is and the ECU under fuels as a result thus the car running lean. How does the car run with the MAF sensor unplugged? When a MAF deteriorates the ECU will adapt as much as it can, if the ECU is reset then (depending on the state of the MAF) it is often out of the boundries of the adaptation channels (so to speak) and thus the car starts running eratically, not idling smoothly, not revving through, etc. as it can no longer account for the fault by adapting. If it were my car the first port of call would be putting a new MAF on there, if you've got an after market filter or induction kit I'd probably take that off as well. Or at the very least make sure it's secure and isn't oiled. I'd also replace all the vacuum hose on there with new silicone hose and clips (very cheap to do) as these have a tendancy to soldify and split. I think the issue is that the car is out of warranty and it's not anyones fault as such, but anyone you take it too will want paying for their time. I hope this helps.

| revokev, one question, i have been told that before a free trial is put on any car the car should have a diagnostic check run on it beforehand, because if there is any fault codes then they will not put it on your car? is this true?
