Default Is the 1.6 petrol OK??

Hello all. I've just test driven one of these excellent cars. The design is fantastic! I drove a 1.4 diesel which was very nice but was wondering how people are getting on with the 1.6 petrol.

I suppose my main concerns are whether the engine is refined and powerful enough for motorway use. Also, what mpg are these engines producing? I really do not want to get one if it only does 35mpg...I'll save my pennies for a diesel.

Many Thanks

A 1.4 turbo diesel would be the better option all round. The 1.6 petrol would use more fuel as you would be flooring the pedal keeping the revs up to get anywhere Imo anyway.

Well, it all come down to a personal preference. Your needs are going to be subjective and the Roomster seems to appeal to people who have specific needs.

If you do the mileage your better off with the diesel, if you don't stick with the petrol.

Although the petrol is cheaper to buy and buy the fuel for, the superior economy will kick in after a certain amount of milage.

AFAIK the 1.6 isn't a bad unit and although not as "refined" as most can't possibly be any roughter than the 1.4 tdi which has a rep for being a little coarse. Your going to get about 38-40mpg with the 1.6 with a little more available of you drive carefully over distance. the 1.4 will give you early 50's. BTW the 1.4tsi is actually slightly cheaper than the 1.6.

Honestly though, the 1.9tdi is the pick of the bunch and the economy is roughly the same as the 1.4 and it's probably a better performer than the 1.6.

It's only £500ish more than the 1.6 too

I have the 1.6 in my Scout and it's quite capable. I also own an Octavia 1.8T so it requires a very different driving style and I'm finding I have to drop a gear and rev more to get the Roomster up steep hills. However on the flat it gives quite reasonable pace and you should find it much more refined than the 1.4TDI.

I seem to get around 30-32 MPG town usage and 40-41 on dual carriageways/motorway.

As Decron says it depends on your personal preference or needs - I don't particularly like the 1.4TDI engines so I'd chose the 1.6 petrol or 1.9TDI if you do lots of miles or are likely to be transporting lots of people or heavy stuff.

I think you're looking at the price for the tiptronic 1.6? The manual is nearly £1200 cheaper than the 1.9TDI, and £585 cheaper than the 1.4TDI, which for me was too much difference for the miles I do.

I would say though if you are spending the extra on the diesel get the 1.9.
