Default Knocking sound from dash when pulling away?

Hi All
Just picked up my Roomster, an 07 1.9TDI 3, and am very pleased with it so far. It's great too to find this forum with loads of useful info.

I was just wondering if anyone had experienced the following? When I pull away in first and then when changing up to second and third I get a knocking noise that sounds like it's coming from beneath the top surface of the dashboard, to the left of the instrument binnacle . Once warmed up this seems to happen to a much lesser degree or barely at all. I'll get a dealer to take a look at some point but if anyone can suggest anything I should check in the meantime then do let me know what you reckon..

I hate to be a spreader of alarm and despondency, but dual-mass flywheels come to mind with noises/juddering from the clutch (apparently) when the car's cold. If that should prove to be the problem you might have a bit of a fight on your hands.

I do hope I'm just being pessimistic.

Thanks for the prompt responses. Will try not to be alarmed and despondent but will get it to a dealer sooner rather than later!

My Fabia 3 had a similar knocking noise and it was sorted by the dealer.

It was the passenger airbag cover rattling and a plastic plug which was knocking against the underside of the dashboard. This plug should have been connected to the heater matrix.

One new cover and the plug connected sorted the noise.

Did it go away when the car was warm?

Have to say a loose cover and plug sounds highly preferable to a dmf problem so I'll be happy if that's all it turns out to be. The car's booked in to the dealer for first thing Saturday so hopefully they'll get to the bottom of it.

The noise did go away when the car had been run for a while.

Don't know if the loose plug moved a bit while the car was in motion.

If I'd hardly got any diesel in the tank the noise wasn't so great but on a full tank moving off it would make a proper knocking sound, hill starts, pulling out of junctions on flat roads, but never moving off going downhill.

Also, had a juddering clutch on a previous car so I know in my case it wasn't that. Air had got into the system and once it was bled out and new fluid put in the judder had gone.

I have found that you have to drive the 105hp diesel unit once warm with a little more right foot. Seems to be very tight at 3,500 miles still, even after following the running in instructions on this forum.

If you drive yours with more revs, are you getting the same knocking noise when changing through the gears?

It happens mostly in first and to lesser degrees in second and third at low speeds. If I use more revs than usual it's possible to avoid it but that's not ideal.

Perhaps the noise decreases once the engine's warm as it's then running more smoothly and less vibration gets transmitted, hence knocking noise reduces. We'll see what Skoda think tomorrow.
