I Love My Skoda!

I'm so happy

My vRS passed it's MOT yesterday with NO advisories

I gave it a thorough clean and changed all the wipers before taking it to the MOT place.I'm surprised because I thought the front and rear discs looked a bit worn(maybe me being pedantic!).I thought it would flag up as an advisory but all good and I don't think I'll need to change them just yet.Even though I bought a set of Pagid discs and pads ready to replace, just in case it didn't pass the MOT.

82K and going strong!

The tester even commented how good condition my Skoda was in

The 'new' MOT certificate is just a printed and signed piece of ordinary A4.I suppose it being on the computer nowadays,it doesn't really matter.
Much prefer the previous one.At least,it was a certificate not a piece of paper.

Well, for all the ECO guys out there, I had a 100 mile round trip to Carlisle this evening and as the roads were relatively quiet, I stuck to all speed limits and logged the average fuel consumption for my car.

Skoda Fabia VRS 1.4TSi
Revo Stage 1 - 200bhp
Maxogen ITG
Iridium plugs
Mileage - 2450
Outside temp - 2 degrees

Average after 104 miles - 46.3 mpg.

The reset was activated when I hit the 40 limits. The run will be familiar to the Cumbria guys on here. Of course, 'normal' driving has only seen about 30-32 mpg.

Anyway, I'm off now to fetch the pipe & slippers. OOPS, thought I was driving a diesel for a minute

Hi, new here I've posted this in the intro section already, but I thought i'ld post it here too, seeing as I might get more of a response.

I dont have a Skoda, but my mum has an 08 Fabia Sport. I just thought I'ld try and find out on here if there are any direct replacement media systems that would fit her car? I dont mean a regular double din with a facia, I mean any made to measure after market units.

Ideally, I want to get her something that has sat nav and more importantly, a reversing camera built in. I have had a quick look at the ZENEC E>GO unit, but it doesnt list the Fabia as a compatible vehicle I dont know if this can be confirmed?

If it's unsuitable, are there any other units that members could recomend?

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

My vRS needs your help!

I've been reading this forum on and off for years, quietly observing from the sidelines...and have learnt loads from all of you....... and I really appreciate it!!

I've owned my vRS from new, since 2004 and 8 years later I still love (almost) everything about it!

There are a few things I would like to sort out and need your advice please. I am not a mechanic, I don't know much about cars really, I wont risk fixing things on my own and I don't want to spend crazy money........ But I want to do a few subtle things:

Firstly I have ordered leather retrim from Seat Surgeons which should be fitted in the next 2 weeks and can't wait, cos the original cloth is beyond repair.

I need to do the door leak thing (long overdue)

Next I want to de-tango, so what bulbs do I need for indicators? Nothing crazy, just subtle and cool and must be legal.

Then I want to change my interior lights (map etc) to white LED? What do I need? I want a simple change over ie change bulb and job done, don't wanna rewire stuff if I can help it.

Finally I want to drop it about 40/45mm on standard 16s. What's best bang for buck coilovers and do I need drop links or whatever? I just want it to sit better/lower and don't wanna spend too much.

thanks dudes

anyone know the main differences ?
also what was the change over year ?

The March 2012 edition of the Scottish Field Magazine has a feature entitled "The greatest 4x4's of all time - 10 of the best" They do not make any comparisons between the 10 vehicles but just say nice things about each vehicle. The Yeti is in there and they say :-
On-Road handling that is close to the brilliance of a VW Golf GTI, matched by off-road capability that will surmount all but the most extreme hazards of a Scottish winter. And then add build-quality better than a Mercedes. What's not to like?
The Skoda Superb 4x4 is also included in the 10 and is described as the best car money can buy, best build quality, best finish, the most enjoyable driving dynamics and highest degree of comfort.

VW and Adblue = Arrrgggggghhhh!

So I learned today the work's Sharan has adblue. I had no idea what it was until I got an error message.

Driving along get a brief message about adblue error, range 22000miles. Then 650miles! Looking in the book the car uses adblue, and if you drop below 600miles remaining distance you run the risk of not being able to restart the engine, even by jumpstarting, which on a bluemotion is fantastic!

So went to VW and grabbed 2 bottles. The only 2 bottles they had. But you need 6 (10 litres) to reset the system and stop it shutting the engine down.

Car's sat on the drive screaming errors about adblue low, and with a spanner symbol and the EML light on. I have to try and limp to a VW garage hoping they have some!

I now also have a new option in the MFD showing the range left of the adblue which never existed until the error message today. Seriously this is dangerous as you could get stranded very easily!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why do VAG have to mess with stuff. I'm starting to miss my old work's Mondeo

Newbie with questions

Alright lads,

I will be starting a new job in a month or so, so i need another car. Didn't want to spend too much but the fabia VRS fits the bill, i always liked the looks but the interior is terrible but hey ho. I will be getting a 2004 model.

Anyhow i wont beat around the bush i WILL be modifying it but on a budget, as i have a quick petrol car as a fun car.

I have spent quite a while reading and TBH my head is turning into smash! - so please bear with me i am new here. A few questions if you may? - I'm looking to spend around 1k.

I would class myself as a careful easy going driver/mechanical sympathetic but like an occasional 'booting it'

1. I will be fitting a EGR delete any differences in products? and decat, would a straight through backbox help? - do these help with power?
2. Will be getting a remap but keeping standard clutch and turbo - where is best in the north west/north east?
3. What lowering springs do folk recommend and how much lower by? does it actually help the handling?
4. How can i tart the interior up cheaply? - was thinking about 3m Carbon fibre stuff.
5. How can i improve the handling/stopping without spending a bomb? - i read about a rear ARB?
6. Are intake systems a waste of time, i read that some folk say a pd160 intake is good, other a waste of time. Are there any others?
7. With the above mods will i be able to make 180-190BHP/300 ft-lb torque on standard turbo? - taking into account bolt on's to not hammer the turbo too much.
8. Would be buying an headunit are the standard speakers **** or do they need upgrading?
9. How much is a lower front splitter? and can you fit them FIY?
10. Can anyone recommend any cheap but good 5000HID kits?

Anything else i should consider?

Apologies for the questions

Thanks lads

1.6 FSI ABS pump failure

Last week on starting my 3 year old Octavia, the ABS, Traction control and PAS warning lights all came on. Driving down the road the speedometer would not work and the fuel gauge needle was playing up.

It has been to my Skoda garage in Abergele today and they have determined that the fault is caused by either a faulty ABS pump or a faulty instrument panel, but they think it is more likely to be the pump.

The car was first registered in Aug 2007, has a full Skoda service history with approximately 34,000 miles on the clock.

I am grateful for reviewing some past topics on the issue with the ABS pump and as a result of speaking with the garage, I phoned Skoda customer services, pointing out to them the anecdotal evidence of this fault and previous actions by VAG.

I now await their response.

Any additional advice would be welcome for my first Skoda in over 35 years of driving. Only bought it in July 2011!

Octavia 1.6 '97 LX (AEE) stalling when idling

Hi guys

Hope you can help me diagnose some recent problems with my Octavia.

A few weeks ago the car wouldn't start. I wasn't able to diagnose the problem and ended up having a shop change the distributor cap to fix the problem.

After this the car has been having problems idling. The symptoms are as follows:

The car starts perfectly (well, actually sometimes it makes a weird noise as if the starter doesn't engange when turning the key, but I suppose this is a completely different problem). When running in cold condition the choker is a bit slow to "turn off" and the engine will run with too many rpms (if not engaged) for a few 100 meters. Idle is then almost ok.

As the engine gets warmer, idling becomes a problem. The rpm-needle will be "pulsating" between 600-1000rpm. Sometimes it will stall completely and stop. When I approach a red light, I can help it by deaccelerating with the engine engaged to make sure that the rpm's are close to 1000 when I disengage and let the engine idle. I will also be able to prevent the engine from stalling by stepping on the gas pedal when about to do so...

I hope you can help

My Mistake...Plus good RAC service

The Yeti wouldn't start today. Key wouldn't turn in the ignition. The headlights wouldn't come on and no horn.

Last week there seemed to be minor hiccup with the red battery light showing very temporarily when I thought it shouldn't have....so today when confronted with this I guessed there must be a problem.

Turns out I couldn't turn the key simply coz the steering lock was tight up against the end of it's travel and just needed releasing a tad to allow the key to turn. And, of course, no headlights or horn for obvious reasons which I overlooked in my minor absence of reason and common sense.

The earlier red battery light must have been another senior moment - albeit still unidentified - but is of no concern whatsoever.

So I felt a proper chump but the RAC man was a star and politely pacified me by saying how easy it was to do it...and other similar pleasantries as he tried to relieve my embarrassment.

First time I can remember doing that without the penny dropping straight away - but not today!

However the service centre staff on the Skoda Assist line was faultless...gave me a period of time in which to expect him (can't stand the expressions - 'window' or 'time frame' )...and the RAC patrol rang almost straight away to confirm attendance within 25 mins - which he stuck to.

In between times I called the dealer just to let him know and seek advice if the patrol couldn't get it going and he was also helpful and outlined what may have to happen. Grateful for that too.

Easy to crticize when things go wrong.. but not this time. Excellent service.

PS. In subsequent conversation with the patrol he said he'd been in the game as a mechanic and as a RAC patrol for 30 years..........and liked Renaults. Said they were no worse than most other makes, except Lexus, which he said were a cut above the rest (my words, not his). Surprised me as, for whatever reason, I'd have expected a breakdown man to have gained a different view. So maybe I was wrong on that one too????

A few minor issues Felly 1.3

All knowing folk, I have just a couple of issues that you might be able to help with.
The Felly works fine, starts every time on the first twist of the key but for the first minute or so the idle hunts just a bit between 500 and 850rpm (at a guess) it doesn't cause any problems at all when driving off, but I wondered if it's connected to issue number two which is that sometimes when taking my foot off the accelerator when approaching junctions, the revs fall down below 500 and the engine stalls.

Any ideas?
I've read a lot of the back pages and it would seem that the car would benefit from a thermostat change (original from a dealer) and a coolant temp sender change (just in case) temp gauge reads about 1/4 unless engine gets very hot at junctions or railway crossings.

Over to you folk for your suggestions.

Different Colour Roof?

We ordered our yeti at the start of October and were given a collection date of "mid Feb". Just checked with the dealer and we are still on-track but he can't give me an exact date yet

As the date is approaching, I have been spending hours looking at what we should have, could have and shouldn't have ordered but I'm sure we will be happy One thing I did notice is there wasn't much talk about the 'two tone' (different colour roof) colour selection on the forum, which we were offered. After checking the UK Skoda site, it seems it's not available in the UK which I found strange as I thought they are all made in the same place?

Perhaps Belgium is a trial to see if people actually order it? I don't think it works with all the colours but some it looks quite good. There is a deal at the moment with the 'Yeti Oxbow' which is white with a black roof: you can see here.

We went for the Mato brown (Muscovado in the UK) with magic black roof - can't wait to see what it will turn out like! Has anyone seen the two tone yeti 'in the flesh'?

Fabia 1.9 TDI Comfort or Octavia 1.9 TDI Elegance?

Hello everyone,

My old Octavia 1999 model is ready for the scrapheap next week (crack in engine block, losing power with puffs of blue smoke coming out of the back, electrics playing up and no heating!)so I need another Skoda but I have a few questions for you experts.

Which would be better to buy: 2003 Fabia 1.9 TDI Comfort Estate has done 67,000 miles, FSH at £2995 or 2003 Octavia 1.9 TDI Elegance Estate which has done 97,000 miles with FSH at £2995?

It will be used for commuting (250 miles a week), transporting DIY stuff/materials and occasionally logs. I am not interested having a high performance car, I just want something reliable, comfortable to drive, and not too expensive to repair.

I used to have a Felicia 1.3 estate, is the Fabia similar to drive?

What are the common faults to look for during a test drive? (non technical please as I don't know much about engines)

Thanks in advance.

electric water pump?

Hi there,

I was talking with a friend of my son's last night who runs a heavily modded (380 bhp) SEAT Ibiza, and he was talking about an electric secondary water pump that is fitted that can run after switch off to cool the turbo.

He said it is fitted as standard to AUQ blocks, but I can find no reference to it in the Haynes book of lies. Is this likely to be an aftermarket torbo cooler - this is not a turbo timer device - it is a physical pump according to him.

If it does exist, whereabouts does it live please. It was too dark to look at his car last night.

Many thanks

Later in the year Colombus will also come with DAB.

Hi takktakk,

What do you know about the Columbus coming with DAB later this year then? Do you know something or are you just speculating.

In April 2011 Skoda Auto announced that MY12 Superbs would be available with the Amundsen sat nav system which could optionally include a DAB receiver. See here. The Amundsen arrived in the SE Plus model but I'm not aware that a DAB version ever made it to the UK, even though VW offer it in their equivalent unit. Did any other country get an Amundsen unit including DAB? I was slightly bemused at the time thinking why would they fit DAB to the SE Plus without being able to offer it to customers of their flagship model, the Elegance?

I've had DAB for the last 5 years, and I don't want to be without it, but I have an Elegance estate on order and so no DAB. My build date has just gone back from week 5 to week 14 so I'd be very interested if anyone knows anything about this. It wasn't good news having to wait an extra 9 weeks but if I end up with DAB it'll be the best news this year so far. I think I'll drop an email to Skoda UK customer services. Anyone out there know anything concrete?

cheers Simon

Our 53 plate SDI estate seems to have developed a couple of gremlins and I'd appreciate any assitance you guys can give us on this one as electrics really isn't my strongpoint!

First the tailgate. Seems basically to intermittently not open with the micro switch but opens fine from inside the car.

Secondly the wipers suddenly decided not to work yesterday when the missus tried to use them. The only thing that happens is when she pulls the stalk toward her as if to wash the windscreen, the REAR wiper activates once. Yesterday on just one occasion when she pulled the stalk toward her the wipers activated but would still not work if the stalk was moved into a position to properly turn the wipers on.

Thanks!

Multiple cylinder misfire?

Earlier on today, was giving the vRS some beans in third when at about 5000rpm, the car juddered several times. Initially thought it was the traction control but soon realised it was something different when the engine management light flashed about a dozen times before going out. Car drove absolutely normal after that, including during some hard acceleration.

Drove to my mechanic who got the laptop plugged in and looked at the fault codes. It showed that cylinders 1 and 4 misfired at exactly the same time. Unsure as to exactly what caused it and was suggested that it could be a fuelling issue, i.e. due to the cold dense air at this time of year, the pump couldn't provide the fuel needed, hence the misfire. Also, coil packs a possibility although unlikely that two would go at the same time?

Anyone experienced something similar or have any ideas?

Occasionally for my work, I have to go out and visit customers. It never fails to amaze me how stupid some people can be.....

Imagine the scenario, a fairly large distributor of components, several warehouses throughout the country, all connected to their main warehouse somewhere not too far from here. All of their stock, ordering, picking, purchasing etc is done on our software, using their servers at the main site.

There I am, in a meeting with the MD in his office, the conversation turns to the servers that they're using. He then points to two Dell towers stacked up in the corner of his office.
OK... not the best of ideas, but not everyone has space for cabinets.

Then I look just above the servers, a window sill.... on which there are several large pot plants.

These get watered every day, using a jug of water, which is kept.... on top of one of the servers

anyway here are a couple of pics showing it working on my columbus. Just ordered a new fascia which should arrive on friday morning.

Er...nope!

Been driving my 07 petrol Combi for a couple of months now and done mainly short trips to work and a long one to the UK at Crimbo. Drove very well, in all cases, very easy to drive with loads of torque on tap and great seats. Not a bad stereo either.

Just took it for a lunchtime spin down some twisty country lanes not far from work, and was laughing my rear off all the way. It's a heavy car, but doesn"t feel it once you are pressing on a bit, great brakes, lots of power, lots of grip.

This is of course nothing new to anyone here who already has one or has driven one, but in case there are some new members still to take the plunge and are worried it will not be a fun drive after they have upsized from something small and nippy...do not worry, it is a great car. She decided to go for there 3 year service and MOT plan at £21.00 a month, worked it out the other day to be £252.00 a year now that seems a lot to me as a service is around £125 + a MOT can now be got at most place for £35 = £160, and on top of this it failed on a rear shock at £182 fitted inc VAT car only covered 18000 miles so this year service and mot worked out to be £434.
Which DAB radio/CD/IPod player for 2005 Superb?

Title was a bit long winded, so in summary – with the analogue switch-off fast approaching, what DAB player options do I have to replace the head unit in the Skoda Superb?

It's the standard factory fit, radio/cassette/CD multi-changer in the boot, but I want to be able to listen to the radio, CDs and preferably plug in my iPhone for music too.

Does the DAB radio need a special aerial fitted as well? Is the cost going to be worth it?

Engine management light flashing, no error codes

TDi 110, year 2001; just had 140,000 service 2 weeks ago. Recently have been doing only short town trips but yesterday on first long run the yellow pre-heater light started flashing on the dash. Took the car to a friend with OBDII reader but no error codes were showing. Does anyone have any ideas, could it be due to build up of oil deposits somewhere caused by short trips in cold weather ?

Power steering light

Hi guys,

A week ago today it was -3 degrees where I was parked in the shade and my power steering light came on. I drove for a couple of minutes until I was somewhere warmer, switched off for a few minutes and turned engine back on and the light was off.

Exact same has happened again today (light has been off all week) and the steering was heavy at low speeds but I noticed that if i rev the car the steering got lighter.

I was wondering if it could be a battery issue due to cold weather? I think its the original battery and the car is a 53 plate PD130.

Or is it something else?

Thanks,

Quicker with the Dog and Bone ?

Went to get a renewal quote for Comprehensive Motor insurance which ends 7th March this year.I have been with a well-known (and heavily advertised, at least in London) on-line motor insurance provider for the last 3 years.

Details as follows:-

Skoda Fabia saloon 1.4, Age 57, 3 years no-claims discount to date, annual mileage 7,000.

Logged-in to my on-line account and selected the quotation button for motor insurance. In the quotation window that came up, I selected occupation status as Retired to reflect my leaving employment as of 31st January under Ministry Of Defence Voluntary Early Release Scheme (Not strictly early retirement, but they didn't have a category for semi-retired). Pushed the "Give me a quote button":-

Premium comes back £1,100 + increase in excess by £50.

Me, a little surprised and shocked, as this is three times last years premium.

So I logged-off, and then re-signed on and sort a second quote, this time with occupation status set to unemployed . . Well, you never know. Response came back "QUOTATION DECLINED".

So popped on the web to see what the story is and discovered that there is some substance for thinking that discrimination is occuring and not only against the retired, but against the unemployed - the main "Justification" for this seems to be that these groups will travel more than employed people ? Euh ?

So got onto their telephone contact number for policy enquiries (Well-hidden) and asked the question.

ME:Why the quoted premium was so much higher than last year ?
THEM: You've obtained a quote for a new customer.
ME: Euh ? I logged-on to my account and pushed the "Give me a quote for car insurance", how could that be not personal to me ?
THEM:Well some people have multiple policies and the system thought you were taking out a new policy. You'll have to wait for your automatic renewal quote to be issued by the system as an E-mail to you.Renewal quotes aren't issued more than 25 days before the renewal date. So expect something by the end of this week/early next.
ME: Is there another button in the account display which will enable me to obtain a fully personalised quotation now ?
THEM: You will have to wait until the end of the week. This restriction is in the policy conditions(Nice bit of restraint of competition).
ME: Shouldn't it be front and centre on the quotation page ?
THEM:No answer.
ME: Will this quotation be reduced/ at the level of last years ? You appreciate that my mileage next year will actually halve as I won't be commuting to work by car (3,500 per year less) and that I am retired now.
THEM: We can't give an indication. You have to wait.
ME: Surely, with this scale of difference you, acting as honest broker, you would offer a broad indication ?
THEM: No.The system will prepare a quote based on your current details.
ME:That will produce a incorrect quote as my annual mileage is set in last year's policy to 7,000 and my occupation status is set to Civil Servant.
THEM: You'll have to change them.
ME: Can you change them for me ? Yes, but it will cost £30 per item.
ME:Whattttt ?
THEM: You can change it on-line yourself.

At that point I could see I wasn't going to get any further.
And of course, if I do change them now and the policy is subject to a premium increase because of my occupation status change, then they'll be asking for a premium supplement for the few days remaining on the current policy.

So, I'll have to wait until they decide that they are going to provide me with a quote.

As to the b*llsh*t about the system thought you were taking out another policy . . . we shall see.

I always find that the well worn sales phrase "They couldn't sell electric fires to f*cking eskimos" comes to mind in these circumstances.

This country nowadays and the barriers it places on ordinary people to do just ordinary things is getting more and more like an Eastern European state run by MOSSAD for the benefit of marketing men and city financiers. You'd have never had got this discriminatory crap in commercial transactions 30-40 years ago - and IMHO its all because the powers that be have decided to divide up the various markets into smaller and smaller chunks (So that they can profit maximise) and this has the effect of severely limiting the social risk sharing that used to occur for the "Disadvantaged" and slants it in favour of a cross subsidy from the "Outside work" to those in work.

- I had an "Exit" interview for my previous employment last month, but nobody gave me the "Entrance" interview to second class citizenship - a gross procedural and governance oversight. Is there a special course I have to go on ?

If the renewal quote remains unchanged, then I'll probably ditch the car and start doing the holidays on the TGV.

Just the sort of thing you want to do to further blight economic recovery, in'nt, commercially discriminate against the baby boom retirees who have the spending power to revive the economy.

Meanwhile, I've only used the car once, for a 2 -hour shopping trip, in the last fortnight.

F*ckw*ts and twisters (A new title for a reprise of the Beach Boys "Heroes and villians" ?)

Postscript

I suspect the game that is being played has two fold objectives and is unified across the industry. Firstly, they see a good excuse for charging more to the current generation of retired people (which is probably why I got an unsolicited quote last week from Saga for £500 comprehensive.) and secondly insurers are all playing the undercut game. So Dog and Bone cover give me an outrageous quote for retirement, knowing full well that I'll immediately interrogate Compare the Meerkat or similar for a quote that will undercut this outrageous one(Not difficult). Once they've got other insurers to nail their trousers to the mast in terms of alternative quotes, they then come back with a final just-in-time undercutting offer which is probably above last years premium (Even though the customer has acquired more NCB during the last year). Most consumer's wipe the fop of their collective brows and accept the final undercut and anybody that doesn't is given the round around and marginalised by the cartel and probably ends up paying more. How financial markets work.

Starting to get a little disappointed

Until last week my impressions of my Superb has been really good. There have been some slight issues like rattles from the interior, unbalanced wheels/front chassie etc. But last week when we went for a skiing trip the car was difficult to start. When it finally started it only was going on three cylinders. After getting a little warmer it ran as ususal again. This time it was -20 C. A few days later when it was time to head home it didn't start at all. I had to get a friend to jumpstart the car. This time it was -25 degrees C. The car is only a couple of months old so Im very surprised. I called Skoda after getting home again and they want to diagnose the car.

Then yesterday the left mirror started to fold out more than it should. I turns around 180 degrees and almost points forward. The only thing to prevent this is to stop it by force when its folding out. A friend of mine have had this happen as well but he hasnt been in for service yet.

I have also heard some "clonking" sounds from the front suspension when going over bumps in lower speeds. This has only occured 3-4 times but it doesn't feel any good.

Overall I´m very happy with the Superb but those problems are starting to throw a shadow over the positive things...

Skoda Octavia rolling noise

Disclaimer: Don't think I am unhappy with my ride. My Skoda is a wonderful car which I drive regularly most on highways.

4 or 5 months after purchase I noticed a strange noise coming from "outside" of the car when driving at any speed over 60km/h. The noise becomes very high at around 80-90km/h and then it becomes indistinguishable from aerodynamics, etc. This noise does not change in frequency or pitch with the rpm. What I mean is that if I travel at 80km/h and the engine is doing 900rpm or 2500rpm is noise is absolutely the same. It is a sort of humming, that changes intensity with speed.

That made me think of 2 possible causes to this noise: 1) tire noise; 2) wheel bearing problems.

I went to the dealer and mentioned this noise. He looked into it and said everything was ok. He then started to explain that the problem could be because of the tire itself and the way each thread of the tire was being worn. According to them it is something that happens to cars that drive a lot in highways at constant speeds.

Does this make sense? If so, where can I find more information? And last question, what can I do to fix this noise?

Car: Skoda Octavia Combi 1.6 TDI (2011 model)
My wheel/suspension setup is all factory fitted and consists of:
- Pegasus 17'' rims
- tires with a mere 20k km on them and still looking new (threadwear ok and even, and tire pressure checked every week)
- sport package suspension

Thank you all briskodians!

Help! Front anti roll bar, mkI vRS Estate

Hi folks,

I need new FARB bushes for my 2005 (53) Octavia vRS Estate. That is, the FARB->Chassis bushes. They appear to come in different sizes, and having done a bit of digging around, found this topic:

http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/163523-powerflex-suspensions-bush-kit-mk1-octavia-vrs/

....which suggests that a mk1 vRS needs a 19mm bush. Great, but what I wanted to do was to confirm whether that is definitely the case even for the Estate variant of the car, just before I spend the best part of thirty quid on the Powerflex part.

Can anyone advise? I called the local Skoda dealership and the guy just wouldn't give me a part number or size, claiming that it is their 'policy' which seems to be geared toward preventing me going third party IMHO.

Thanks.

In a dilemma: 1.9 or 2.0 TDi Octavia Estate?

Hi All,

I think I've finally decided on a diesel Octavia Estate, elegance spec, to replace my Focus estate and am unsure whether to go for the 1.9 105 bhp or the 2.0 140 bhp. Having had a look at prices on the web etc there doesn't seem to be a massive difference in price between the two models. I would have thought that the 2.0 would have been considerably more expensive so am I missing something here?

Either way I would prefer to avoid a DPF version as although i do around 15-20k a year the majority of my driving is a 6 mile commute to work on an A road so there may be potential DPF issues with such a small journey (my Focus doesn't have one). I've read on this forum (which is brilliant and v informative btw) that the 1.9tdi is likely to prove to be more reliable but is a bit less refined than the 2.0 PD and would 105 bhp be enough when the car is fully laden (we travel to France twice a year camping and always come back with a fair few cases of wine)? I would prefer the 2.0 as my current focus is a 2.0 TDCi 136 bhp and I appreciate the extra power and the sixth gear but am I courting trouble by going for a 2.0? I have considered the VRS but reading the problems with the injectors on the 170 I have been put off. I assume this problem does not apply to the 140 variant and are there any other issues I need to be aware of with either the 1.9 or 2.0?

My budget is around £11k and looking for a 08-09 I guess (would prefer the facelift model) and would probably look to buy from a main dealer for peace of mind and a 12 month warranty. Unfortunately there is no main dealer near me so I will have to travel to buy one so if anyone has driven both a Focus diesel and Octavia I would appreciate opinions on what the differences are between the two e.g. engine noise etc.

Appreciate your advice as always.

Run off from wipers obscuring the side mirrors

Hi,
Tried looking for this problem across the forums, but couldn’t find anything.
The problem I seem to be having with my Fabia MK2 (2011), is when I use the windscreen wipers, the off run moves across the driver’s door window obscuring the side mirror making it nigh on impossible to see anything in it!
It’s a bit disconcerting as I then have to physically move to look back rather than just using the mirror as intended. Obviously in those sort of conditions I should be watching the road ahead just in case
If anybody has any suggestions, they would be more than welcome

35k p.a commute - VRS?

Looking for a little bit of advise and help from other vrs owners or people who do a long commute.

I will most likely be moving soon and will have a 70 mile each way commute 5 days a week.

I planned on getting a vrs petrol estate previously, but now this has moved on to the diesel version.

I currently drive a '09 Honda Civic Type R which is well documented for its poor ride and uncomfortability and really want something for this long commute which will be as comfortable as possible to drive.

I've never been such a big fan of the visual styling of other models in the range which is why I wouldn't straight away think to go for an elegance etc.

Also I really like the full VRS leather and having sat in both cars a couple of months ago, preferred it to the standard vrs sports seats - is this something that others have encountered?

Also if anyone else has any suggestions of cars that would be good for this journey, then I am all ears. The thing that draws me to the octavia be it hatch or estate is the 5 doors and big boot along with 50+mpg on the motorway.

Thanks in advance!

I am wanting to replace all the vacuum lines on my 2002 Elegance 110TDi and I am wanting to find out where I can source this from? Also, it would be handy to know how much in length I need. TPS don't seem to stock this, only reinforced rubber fuel line (which is expensive).

Any help/advice would be gratefully received!
Selling up these as I've decided that this summer, the Ibiza is going!

They're in good condition, I cleaned them up and painted them black when I bought them as I wanted a sleeper look from them rather than bright red. Could do with a rub down as theres a few brush marks, but whos going to see them when theyre on the car!! I may tackle them this weekend and I'll take some pics also.

Supplied with genuine SEAT supplied AP pads with loads of meat left on them, also a set of discs.

Gutted I didnt get around to fitting them as they've been sat in my room for months now

Looking for around £300.

Collection from Cardiff prefered although I could arrange a courier, but it wont be super cheap!

Words could not describe

Ok well here's a story for you all.

Saturday as most of us witnessed it was quite icy and snowed in most places. I went about my business as usual going to my friends and parking up and taking his car to the gym. There was a little snow on his drive which has a not harsh but moderate incline towards a garage. I parked up and left the car in N as I usually do and did it further away from the garage from the norm facing downhill. As the hours went buy the sleet/snow turned to rain. I came outside to get my gym kit from the car and behold! My shining new furby had slowly (over the course of 2 hours) slid down the drive and right into the ***ng garage handle! I was in a state of shock! I reversed it right out slipping back up frantically trying to get it onto level grounds. We scrutinised the very slight indent the handle had left in the bumper (the small 2cm strip above the num plate and below the grille) instantly we set to work massaging a autoglym cutting compound to soften the edges of the indent as to take the edge off. After 1 and a half hours we were happy with the preliminary result, I checke it in daylight and i told my dad i would give him £100 if he could spot it to which he failed. So jobs a good un! What comes from this is now I will leave it in P as If I had locked it in park mode it probably would not of happened! :-(

Octavia Mk1 Headlight adjusters

Had noticed that my vRS's headlight adjusters weren't working and me being the tight wad that i am I wasn't prepared to buy new replacement motors So out they came, pretty straightforward job torx bit to undo both screws, angle the motor and they de hitch from the reflector (note: make sure you set them maximum length plunger before refitting).

Unit out of car.

There are several clips (pretty obvious) including one to support the motor and hold that in place, once they are popped the whole pcb and motor slide out.

Once you have the pcb out you can pull the motor off the Pcb, (it is held in place by brush clips-so dont worry if it seems to fall apart).

The culprit in this instance (causing the lights to wobble up and down with no adjustment) is the slide potentiometer tracks being contaminated, a hint of servisol (wd40 will work) slide the pip up and down a few times then dry out with some tissue.

you maybe able to see some deteriation to the carbon track in the image below however carefully put some 1000 wet and dry paper inside and repeat the Servisol/wd40 process again. (if you feel up to it you can desolder them from the pcb and take apart and increase the contact pressure in the pip but its fiddly.

Put it all back together making sure the shaft is fully extended and hey presto its should all now work again. The motors are nothing short of RC car servos and have rebuilt a number of those over the years.

Hope this is of some use.

octavia vrs loss of power

Hi

I have just bought an Octavia VRS on a 51 plate. I was driving yesterday when the red oil light beeped and flashed on the dash board. I accelerated and then it went off. I checked the oil it is just over the maximum on the dipstick. Since this happened the car loses power when I am driving. It happens in any gear at between 1500-2000 rpm. I take my foot off the accelerator and then back on again and that cures the problem til it happens again. I took it to the garage but they are unable to look at it til friday. The oil light has not flashed or beeped since. Is it safe for me to carry on driving?

Any idea what the cause of this may be? Could it be there is too much oil in there? But there isn't any smoke?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Alpine and K-Line

Hi there,

I have just purchased an Alpine CDE-123R to replace the standard Symphony radio in my 03 Octavia vrs.
I also intend very shortly to get VCDS and was looking through the Ross-Tech Wiki which makes mention of an aftermarket radio problem linked to the k-line wiring.

Can I disable this so as not to shred my Ross Tech lead when I get it or is the Alpine standard harness sufficiently complex to deal with this problem at source - i.e. internally in the unit or harness?.

Finally, very briefly, I have been searching some other threads that mention a finisher plate when fitting the radio, is this required on a mk1 Octavia?, as I cant see one on the ICE website that I ordered the radio from.

Many thanks in advance.

Is this the end form my Felicia Fun?

Hi all,

My Felicia fun has been on a trip to the garage today. It had recently started to get rather noisy after running for a while (Tappet like noises) and yesterday on my way home from work, the oil light started to come on when I was braked suddenly. I checked the oil this morning before taking it in, and the level seemed, ok, but I topped it up slightly none the less and took it to the garage.

Among other things that need sorting, they ran an oil pressure test and found the pressure to very low, suspecting a problem in the lower part of the engine, that they say is not serviceable.

Has anyone come across an issue like this before? Is there really nothing that can be done? It looks like oil has been seeping out slightly from the rocker cover gasket, could this case these problems or is it going to be an internal problem?

Is there anything like K seal that I can put in there to try and seal up any problems?

I'm guessing an engine transplant is going to be pretty expensive.

Any help or any comments on the above would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Sorry if this has been asked before - I did a search and found nothing, but then I am not certain I am using the correct terminology, so...

Hi everyone,

As the title suggests, this is my problem. I've read the other posts about this but it doesn't seem to match my fault code read by the AA.

The lights came on as I was accellerating away from some traffic lights. I had the AA out and they diagnosed fault code P0725 engine speed sensor.

However, it was showing as a historical code and the fault wasn't present. He cleared the code & I've since driven the car home without fault so far.

Any ideas and cost implications folks?

Snow chains for 215/60 tyres DO exist!

Aha......... now I wonder if this will count as legal proper snow chain use in certain Alpine places? I just spotted these snow chains on the Superskoda website for 215/60 and 225/50 tyres:

http://www.superskod...6-and-17-wheels

But as we know there is not enough space to fit them to the front wheels so these are for the REAR wheels only......... which only normally get 2% of the power. Hmmm. But I guess if the going gets tough in snow, the front wheels will slip and the power will go to the back and voila you will get going. So a neat solution I'd say if you want to go to places with mandatory snow chain use (but want to have 215/60 winter tyres or only have summer tyres).

Anyone else had a poor experience at Progress Skoda Bedford?

Just put my Octavia in for 20,000 mile service at main dealer- Progress Skoda, Bedford. My vehicle was set to viable service intervals, using the more expensive oil for viable services. I specified this when I took it in. when I drove out, I noted the log book where the service engineer had ticked 'oil NOT suitable for variable service intervals' used.
When I complained to the sales assistant, he said "They just ticked the wrong box" and ticked the other box. Then when I got home (3 miles) I noted the trip computer told me I had 9600 miles to my next service!
this means they have almost definitely put the wrong oil in AND changed the car to fixed interval AND knocked off 600 miles!

Deeply unimpressed, and feel a mug, wish I had marked the oil filter so I could at least be sure the oil even got changed.
Does anybody know what size the washer pipes are from the pump in teh front nearside wheelarch?

I replaced by pump this weekend as the old one as leaking and the pipes are only long enough to fit one way but the new pump must spin the opposite way to the old one as the front washer now drenches the rear screen and vice versa (ebay...). Anyhow rather than faffing with the wiring I simply want to plug the connectors on the other way round and pipework isn't long enough so I need to extend it. Stupidly though I forgot to measure the pipe sizes before I refitted the wheellarch liner but remember one was smaller than the other and it's the small one I need to extend. I'm guessing it's 3mm ID but I'm not sure so could do with confirmation before I purchase some connectors???

Does anyone know if it possible to retrofit a climate control module in to a standard aircon car? I am just talking about swopping the control unit in the dash.

Vauxhall glow plugs whoa.

Fedup. 38k, 2.5 years and the glow plugs have burnt out.
Quite normal apprently.
Well not a major problem I thought, 'cus the van is still under warranty.

6 days later, and I've STILL not got it back, hence the reason for dragging the good old reliable vRS out of its winter hibernation that is STILL running on its original glow plugs after 7 years and 87k!

The reason for this crazy delay?
They can't get one of the plugs out because it's seemingly virtually welded itself in, and if they apply anymore pressure it's going to snap, thus creating a major head off and drill out excercise.

Vauxhall are fully aware of this problem it seems, and always authorise the dealer to call a one off 'specialist' that comes out to drill and tap through the glow plug for removal.

Went in yesterday to ask if they knew when he was coming as I need the van. They couldn't give me any idea. They've contacted him, but he's very busy, and will get to them asap.
Meanwhile, would you like a base model Corsa courtesy car in a few days time if yours isn't ready sir?

NO!

Have posted previously about problem with screenwash bottle and how good dealer in fixing. Now not happy, the weekend saw the second visit in two weeks to fix. On the way home from work yesterday the washer was empty, bit unhappy thinking dealer didn't refill it. This morning filled it up. Sat at my desk and someone came to me and asked if mine was the white Skoda? Immediate dread someone's driven in to it, but no, green liquid (halfords finest screen wash) is pouring out all over the car park. Spoke to dealer taking it in Thursday to get another car while they fix it, third time lucky!?

Diesel Scout or Superb 4X4

I'm in a bit of a quandary, it's time to let my trusted Octy go and perhaps more grudgingly my Fab to fund a 4x4. I presumed I'd go for the Scout, the natural progression from my standard Octavia but checking nationally for used two to three year olds I keep finding Superb 4x4 CR's similar or cheaper than than even a PD Scout. Even on sites like Autobid a new standard Superb 140 4x4 is similar priced to the scout with just a couple of added options.

I've had the Octy over 5 years and would keep my next motor for at least that. I want 4x4 primarily for towing my van on small grassed caravan sites and rallies on farm fields so don't need a pucker 4x4 just the added traction especially on wet/sodden rough grass.

I know I should be looking at whole life costs but my head has been turned by the Superb and it's bells and whistles. There's a dealer sale Superb 170 Elegance 4x4, low miles 59 plate up for 16K, I can't find a Scout for that. I would be trading in the Octy and either trade or private sale the Fab. My wife would occasionally need to drive and would miss the ease of driving the Fab.

My question is, which would be the better choice from the towing generally perspective and on grass in particular. I've posted this on the Octy forum aswell.

GLOWPLUG FLASHING AND ENGINE WORKSHOP

Another Newbie to the site with a four year old Skoda Superb (pre 2008 model, but 2.0 PD with PDF).

Recently it has started to warn me of Engine Workshop! and having the flashing glowplug indicator: this occurs randomly and usually after some miles e.g. 20+. It regularly gets motorway runs of 80-100 miles (recent journeys have included Leicester to Yeovil)with the job I have and is rarely used for just "pottering" around towns. I was warned by the Dealer when I bought it that short journeys can cause the PDF to clog up with soot, but told my journeys (mainly motorways and major A-roads over long distances) would mean I shouldn't have problems here, plus I have never seen the DPF warning indicator come on other than part of the normal ignition check sequence when turning on. VAG-COM check via Independant garage suggests this is the case though and they suggest cleaning of DPF required, but worried that I haven't seen any other warning, or been forced into limp home mode via the ECU, so wondering if there are any known faults with sensors or electrics?

I would expect that DPF is checked via ECU for soot levels, and would warn via DPF indicator first and then Engine Workshop and Glowplugs warning would occur only if this had been ignored: I would also expect it to have been put into some osrt of Limp Home mode. The fact it has jumped from nothing to engine warning appears to suggest it either hasn't checked properly, has a faulty sensor perhaps, or something else is causing the problem (other electrical sensors on the same circuit perhaps)?

However, there might be a problem.
Yesterday creeping along in traffic (25 miles covered so everything nice and warm), it simply won't run at idle speed in 2nd smoothly - there was a very apparent and continous "seesaw" effect (this is in D btw).

Car broke down - Battery/Alternator problem?

Long time since last post but got stumped this morning.

On the way into work this morning (only -4degC) set off as usual then after about 4miles the ASR and ABS warning lights came on. Me being me thought I'll pull over and turn off/on and it may reset. So I pulled over in a lay-by turned off went to turn back on and nothing, the dash lit up as normal and the engine didn't turn over. Tried again.. same. Lifted bonnet, pulled battery cover wiggled the contacts checked the fuses on top of the battery (all ok) went back in and turned over and car started!!! So I carried on with the commute. About 7-10 miles further the ASR, ABS and airbag lights came on and the radio kept turning itself off/on, so limped it to work and when I got there turned off and went to start up again and... nothing didn't even turn over.

Any ideas what it might be? Goosed battery/alternator? There's a little garage opposite work, I might ask them to have a look if it's gonna be serious.

Cheers,

Map Scale Zoom Control - lost settings

Hi

I used to be able to control the Map Scale from the stearing wheel but since the battery went flat(car left 6 weeks) I have been unable to do so, or work out how I managed to set this feature up in the first place! (old age causing memory loss?)

I cannot find any mention of this in the Columbus or Car Manuals.

Can anyone offer any advice as to how to restore this function?

Thanks in advance

Had Its Chips :-(

It never rains but it pours I cant believe my luck latley! With my MOT today I decided to restore my ECU back to standard with BLUEFIN incase the rumours of the new law JAN 1ST 2012 are true that if a car is remapped it will fail its MOT. Anyway it was going ok until the end the fan kicked in even tho the car was cold then it said 'restore complete turn off ignition and unplugg' so I tried to start it and it just turns! Then the red steering wheel symbol shows along with a 'beep' and the fan starts up again. I tried reconnecting the bluefin again and it says error code E001. VCDS Wont scan the engine it says 'Too many faults' I scanned the ABS and got 01341 Meaning a fault with the engine ECU due to a remap. Has anyone else had this? I intend to ring superchips as soon as they open

Well I went to my local rolling road today go see how many horses my little 1.4 has left, and I was in for little surprise.

so after my little shock i had the garage to do a little digging for me and I found that not only had my car gained 40 BHP it is also been tuned by ABT. so got the blower to ABT to confirm it and gave them my VIN and other info and hey presto my car is on their database. and was tuned on july 12th 2005.

so went digging some more though the service history and found the details of 1st owner and contacted him and he told me that he took all the ABT badges off because he didn't like them. WTF so brought new badges from ABT and they should be here with in 2 weeks hopefully :-)

i though my car was a little fast. so I'm now only 40 BHP off my 180 BHP target. so now my VRS badges can come off.

I'm looking at something more Satin or Matte. But also not to have a secondary colour in them like mine currently have a bluey/purpley finish to them.
I Like the new Focus RS500 colour or something like this

Hi.

Today I ordered my Superb L&K, moving up from the Octavia vRS.

The dealer convinced me of the beautiful look of the all brown interior. It's alligned with the new paint called Magnetic Brown. Dealer said it "sounds odd but looks very well".

Reason for picking L&K was significant money saved compared to upping an Elegance to the same level. I ticked every tickable box...

What do you guys think of the interior with piano trim? Have the Czechs gone completely mad, or does it look it's exclusive part?

My order is open for a little while and can be changed. On the other side it's looks isn't matched by many.

YIPPEEEE, IT'S BACK, The BRISKODA trip to Prague

If you want to join the official Meet it starts at Dover Ferry Port in the early hours of Thursday 13th Sept and Finishes at Dover again for about midnight Thursday 20th/Friday 21st. (so make sure you book that time off work )
I have just booked the hotel room for me and Paige, and everyone should all book the same hotel.
http://www.hotelolsanka.cz/?locale=en - looks like a proper communist block hotel, but seems quite nice inside.

I recommend you find a group of 4 of you and booking a 4 Bedroom option, which is 2 Double Bed rooms sharing a bathroom and Toilet.
If you are also driving you can park in the secure underground carpark for £10.80 per car per night
The 4 bed option plus parking 1 one car for the 7 nights Arrive 13th Sept and Leave 20th Sept costed £400, prices may change if you dont book early
The box seems to be smoother than in my Octy vRS which is also DSG and I can't believe it's only 10 bhp more than mine. I'll update this thread at the weekend with final thoughts.

VRS tyre size

Hi guys,

Just wondered what the standard tyre size is for a VRS? I'm guessing 215/45/17?

Thanks

Fabia BBZ - Misfire Cylinder 1

Hi All,

Troubles with the wife's Fabia, 2004 1.4 16v 100bhp, BBZ engine 90k miles.

Oil consumption has been reasonably high for a while - about 1 litre per 3000 miles (ok, not as high as some others here). Checked the oil on Saturday and it was a few cm's below the min on the stick. Topped it back up.

Today, got a call from the wife to say that the Engine Management light was flashing, that there was no power and that it was juddering a lot below 2000rpm. Got home and checked it with a fault code reader - showed 16685 - Misfire on Cylinder 1. So that explains the juddering, and the lack of power is that + limp mode on the ECU.

So, what's it likely to be. From the research I've just done it sounds like it could be anything from a valve head, to a spark plug. Anyone had the same thing? Also sounds like the BBZ doesn't get to play the piston rings game, so the oil consumption could be a red herring.

Thanks
