A few minor issues Felly 1.3

All knowing folk, I have just a couple of issues that you might be able to help with.
The Felly works fine, starts every time on the first twist of the key but for the first minute or so the idle hunts just a bit between 500 and 850rpm (at a guess) it doesn't cause any problems at all when driving off, but I wondered if it's connected to issue number two which is that sometimes when taking my foot off the accelerator when approaching junctions, the revs fall down below 500 and the engine stalls.

Any ideas?
I've read a lot of the back pages and it would seem that the car would benefit from a thermostat change (original from a dealer) and a coolant temp sender change (just in case) temp gauge reads about 1/4 unless engine gets very hot at junctions or railway crossings.

Over to you folk for your suggestions.

Is this the end form my Felicia Fun?

Hi all,

My Felicia fun has been on a trip to the garage today. It had recently started to get rather noisy after running for a while (Tappet like noises) and yesterday on my way home from work, the oil light started to come on when I was braked suddenly. I checked the oil this morning before taking it in, and the level seemed, ok, but I topped it up slightly none the less and took it to the garage.

Among other things that need sorting, they ran an oil pressure test and found the pressure to very low, suspecting a problem in the lower part of the engine, that they say is not serviceable.

Has anyone come across an issue like this before? Is there really nothing that can be done? It looks like oil has been seeping out slightly from the rocker cover gasket, could this case these problems or is it going to be an internal problem?

Is there anything like K seal that I can put in there to try and seal up any problems?

I'm guessing an engine transplant is going to be pretty expensive.

Any help or any comments on the above would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

White smoke from exhaust and heater blowing cold

Having a few problems with the Felcher:

Drove for about five minutes, noticed recently the car is starting to emit plumes of white smoke from exhaust.
Driving home before, white smoke was coming out even while driving. It's not 'thick', but it's hard to tell what is a lot in this situation, and it's very cold out.
Heater started blowing cold, and lukewarm, it has been doing this intermittently for about a week, but now it's just cold/warm.

The car isn't overheating - the temp gauge goes up to halfway, and comes down when the thermostat supposedly opens.

Radiator is hot/very warm after five or so minutes, coolant bottle water is freezing (it wasn't pressurised like a HG would be). Could it be blocked??? I can't figure it out. Also, no white deposit at all in oil, only a tiny, tiny bit on the oil cap (I do a lot of short driving).

I'm going to have a proper look tomorrow - I bought the car for purpose of driving 200 miles a day - is this a good idea with these?

Felicia Estate Rear Quarterlight Replacement

Arghh...having just got the boy's Felicia through the MOT last weekend its been broken into through the (now broken) offside rear door quarterlight glass. TPT&T so no glass cover on his insurance, so looks like I'm fixing to keep the cost down.

First question: I assume the estate and hatchback rear doors/windows are the same (as each other)?

The Haynes manual seems to show it being fairly easy to replace the quarterlight once the door trim is removed, any advice however on removing the trim or the job in general would be most appreciated.

I'm looking to source the glass from a breakers at the moment so if anyone knows of a likely source please let me know.

Managed to temporarily plug the hole quite neatly with some cardboard and polythene sheet, so hopefully the car won't be full of snow tomorrow morning!

Hi guys, just wanted a confirmation of my diagnosis on my recently acquired felly 1.3 1998. Temperature gauge basically sits at the bottom with normal driving, if we get stuck in traffic it will rise to 90 degrees and if sat for a long time it will reach 100 degrees plus but then the fan cuts in and brings it back down to 90. When out of traffic and driving normally again it drops back to bottom. I'm assuming this is the common thermostat stuck open problem but before I ordered one just wanted to see if I might be missing something, do Jorily still do the whole thermstat/housing thing together.
Many thanks.

Skoda Felicia 1.6 overheating strange problem

Hi

Week back the alternator has stopped working so had to change it.

My Felicia has developed very strange problem, after changing the alternator the water has stopped running around and the fan isn`t turning on either. So it is overheating very badly. Took it to the garage and had the thermostat changed and it all seemed fine when tested, when picking it up from the garage and driving back home it started overheating again even though I was driving and not being stud still, so I have turned heating on full to keep it cool and drove straight back to the garage. Again the same problem, water not running around and fan not turning, after few minutes at all suddenly started working, water started going round fan turning, so I left the garage and headed home but it started overheating again.

It just starts and stops running the water around on its own, as one pipe is hot and another cold. I am taking the Felicia back tomoz to have another look at it, does anyone had this strange problem before? any hints or tips?

They mount on a slide type of plate at the bottom of the dash, under the radio area, so can be removed easily with valuables. I've scoured eBay, and the dealers but no joy - I was told by one dealer that he could try ordering it, and the associated parts to fit it/mount it, but no certainty if it would actually turn up and it would be rather pricey!

Anyone out there who has one they'd like to sell please?

Cheers,

"Big Foot" strikes again in Felicia

Hi all, finding the Briskoda forums, members and site of great interest and all very helpful.

I managed to sort out my 2000 (W) Felicia Classic 1.3mpi I bought for little money a year or so ago to do up for my daughter when she's old enough to drive - it passed the MoT first time. It starts and runs very well, though a little rattly from the very top end - pretty normal from what I hear. Only done 50k miles too, no rust to speak of either.

Well, I love driving it! My usual car is either a motorcycle (big Harley ) or an 3.0l Jag X-Type auto, so I thought it'd take me a while to get used to a manual again. After a couple of rather scary drives, I thought "there's something wrong with my size 15 clutch foot!!!" Well, there isn't but it was getting caught on the left side by a small footrest - so I slung that out and removed the screws that were left. A bit better. Then I noticed it would get caught on a little guard around the base of the steering column. Out went this guard. Slightly better again. Now if I wear a shoe which has an edged sole on it, the lip or edge catches in the plastic, ridged gaiter of the steering column! So should I remove some of this? Should I go for foot-reduction surgery? Any others suffer from this? Any ideas?

I should point out I have just returned from a 600-mile trip down to see my old mum in Devon and back again - and I didn't hit anything but had to consciously think about my clutch foot all the time and did the odd kangaroo start. Nothing dangerous, just slightly embarassing. The car did return 48mpg though, at a steady 60ish and touched 95 on the flat with a bit left! Only one thing went wrong with it - one of the plastic parcel shelf strings broke - a common fault - looking to replace both now from Jorily or elsewhere.

Cheers,
What should I do (short of draining the system). Would diluting it and manually spraying it out work before filling it with actual windscreen washer?
I have a dilemma. My car, a blue Felicia 1.6 has a few problems such as a slipping clutch & needs a new rear stub axle but I don't know whether to fix it or sell it. It is far too good to break, has t&t & the engine has only done 72000 miles. Trouble is the Islington parking permit is running out & I need to make a decision quick time. If anyone can sort me out an axle or has any better ideas as to what I should do with the car then please call me on 07563 761 353.

Diesel Pick-up Electrical problem

The trusty Ute, £600 off e-Bay about three years ago is still happily trogging along at 93,000 miles and an invaluable part of the fleet.

BUT

The other day I was helping somebody with some electrical work and a 12V/240V inverter seemed to go duff. So I plugged it into the Skoda to check with no result in terms of the inverter.

Except, when I got back in to drive home my phone wasn't charging, and the clock (Huge thing, sits where a rev-counter would be on a more elaborately equipped car) had stopped round about the time I tried the duff inverter.

"Ah.. Fuse" I thought

Checked here and whilst the fuse layouts I have seen don't tie in exactly with my car I assumed I'd be looking at a 15A fuse, a suspicion compounded when I find that 15A was the one rating that no spare existed for in the box.

Off to Halfrauds and part with £1.79 for two new fuses.

Regrettably some early swapping around outside the store achieved nothing so I drove the still warm engined car home.

Later that evening I need to go to the pub, always a use for the Skoda which attracts less notice than my other car

Turned on the ignition. The little 'curly wire' light didn't illuminate, and now, the cold-engined car won't start. The first time ever in 3 years it has ever let me down.

Went out this morning with a meter, checked every 15A fuse, all perfect.

Now, had the 'curly wire' fail happened at the same time as the cigar lighter / clock fail I would have assumed a relay issue.

But the consecutive failure, and the fact I can't find a duff fuse have me baffled.

Any ideas?

Inlet hose/clutch/accelerator cable frazzled!

Was driving up the motorway, and could smell a faint burning smell. Looked in the rear view mirror and thought I'd driven over a lit cigarette as a load of embers scattered from under the car.
Got to Tesco's and noticed the clutch pedal had become hard - I thought the clutch was cooking itself and pulled over.

Opened the bonnet and could smell burning, but the clutch area didn't smell, and it wasn't hot.
Then saw another ember drift in front of my eyes, and checked the inlet area and found one of the hoses (the narrow one from the oil cap to the back of the inlet) completely severed and glowing in two locations. The clutch cable was also victim (the plastic insulation was completely frazzled) as well as another one (which I think is the throttle cable).

I think this was down to the fact that they were all being pushed against the manifold by the new inlet breather pipe I put on the other day. Will get some photos tomorrow when I investigate further. Not sure how long this has been occuring? Maybe it wasn't clipped up correctly - I've noticed a LOT of support clips on the hoses!

To sell whole or break

Hi my son has a Felicia 1.3 with about 59k on the clock and has been all over Europe for the last winters only problem he has ever had was with the electric door lock on the passenger side.

Its now been sitting since October on the drive and its time for it to go. I had to move it yesterday and it started first time. Mechanically its great apart from one thing the nearside wheel does no go in the same direction as the other wheels courtesy of my son hitting a kerb (he says he was not speeding) but the angle of the wheel says otherwise. He has a spare set of wheels with good winter tyres.

So my question is should I try and sell it for him complete and if so how much should he expect to make or should I break the car for him and sell things bit by bit. The car has been serviced regularly and has all new shocks, springs , exhaust, windscreen and breaks in the last 2 years.

cheers for any advice on this ?

I'm looking to lower my Felicia Estate Diesel.
I've read up about the MK1 Golf rear struts and going v low is not a problem... that's the idea! I'm not talking street hugging but lower than stock for both handling and aerodynamics to help with mpg.

I've also read up about Ford Escort MK5 front springs fitting but what about the struts?

Skoda Octavia front struts look (just eyeballing here) like they have the same fitment as the Felicia... as they're designed for a heavier car, I expect that the damping rates will also be higher. Has anyone tried this?

Any other ideas as to what to fit?

Have any of you other pickup or fun owners noticed a sharp increase in insurance premiums this year? I normally shop around etc and I've checked all the usual suspects but I can't actually find a cheaper insurer than my current one even though they had to barefaced cheek to up my premium by another 250 notes again this year on top of upping it by 100 notes the year before. It's kind of like they've all gotten together and covertly upped the cost knowing full well you will have no choice

it's difficult enough as it is to insure a pickup, everybody I've been to has told me I need a commercial van policy for sdp use which I'm happy with and I understand why etc, but the insurance cost is going up folks... All I've done is gain another years no claim discount since last year

What I've discovered is that if say my pickup were a hatchback with exactly the same mods, all declared and legit it would be a quarter of the price to insure it, 99.9% of the time I go round with absolutely nothing in the back so effectively it's just the same as a car but with no roof on the back.. What gives? It's driving me crazy now how can I be more of a risk now than a year ago

something else that one insurer told me is that if it had 4 seats it would be classed as a car which would make it cheaper.
