New tasteful mod. A ribbing is expected!

Well, it had to be done. Opportunity arose for a bargain and it was easy to wire up as I had a switch already in the dash from my long-ago aborted strobe install in the (old) headlight units.

So, have been running 5-LED sidelights for quite some time. Much brighter and therefore safer, IMO

But new mod = Intercooler back lighting! Is literally nowt more than a small LED strip glued to the inside corner of the crashbar, shining down. Independently switched too. Yup, I am a tart!

I loves my vRS!

Just a little note.

Completely fell for my vRS all over again last night...

Normally I do a 40 minute commute into west London down the A40 and while it's not so bad, it's by no means fun and I end up getting obsessed with MPG in the absence of being able to plant the right foot.

Drove from London to Horncastle in Lincolnshire.. That's A1(M) and then a load of really safe but fun and swooping NSL roads..

It was an awesome drive and I've not had the chance so safely and repeatedly plant it like that and feel the vRS torque surge through the gears for ages. Also remembered how good the TDi could actually sound when being pushed.. Really nice exhaust tone for a stock diesel setup.

Cars running better than ever now too!

.... I'm here for a week, but at least I'll have something to look forward too when it's time to leave

Hi:

Apologies if this has been asked before but need some top up oil for the wife's new 1.2 TSI (85).

I know this has to meet VW 502.00 standard (its on fixed servicing) but I saw in Halfords today that Castrol Edge which complies with 502.00 can be had in either 0-30W or 5-40W.

Will either do or is one grade preferable to the other?

BTW just realised that the topic text is wrong. Should be 5-40 not 0-40

What to do with my vRS

I've had my vrs close to two months now and am thinking of making some modifications. I could do with some help in deciding what exactly to do and in what order. Ideally I'd like to make the handling less roll prone first as I use loads of bendy roads and if I have anything in the car it inevitably goes flying when I let the beast loose. At the same time anything I do to it has to not affect my insurance too much, and I don't want to wreck the ride either. I'd also like to up the power, specifically the capacity of the car to get from 30-70 as that's where the grins live

What would the board recommend, in that case, that I do early to make it even more fun? I have the funds needed to do most of this stuff early but could do with getting some bang for my quid

1.4MPI hesitant acceleration and jittery idle

Hello All

Am having problems with my W reg 1.4 (MPI) Fabia and can't find the solution in these forums. I love the car and engine so any knowledge you can share would be appreciated!

Currently, the car idles in a jittery manner, as if misfiring slightly. Also between about 1,500 and 2,500 revs there is hesitancy, as if engine is being held back. I've not experienced the problem to this extent before.

I have tried cleaning throttle valve, replaced spark plugs, themometer was replaced last year so is working, and have recently serviced has fresh oil etc

I drive regularly 100 miles journies, so car gets a proper run quite often. It has done 160,000 miles, so I understand there will be niggles(!) but any ideas you can give would be worth a shot.

Many thanks

Operation 256mm rear brakes!

Funny how my car came with 256 front brakes and now several years later I am looking at getting some on the back.....

Started yesterday with me opening the box of rear brakes I nabbed off Clive (Westallc) and being very pleased at them actually fitting my car and discs turning smoothly, etc.

Then it began with a big clean-up. Wire brushing first and a pointy screwdriver type of tool to flake off bad paint. The plan was always to paint them red, so condition was irrelevant to me as long as they were mechanically sound, which they are indeed.

Now, back at home, I have rubbed them down with coarse sandpaper and given them a good wash. After taping off all the rubber they are currently hanging in the back garden from a DIY paint rail (garden fork between water-butt and BBQ, hanging on string.... ) with a coat of metal primer on them. Going to let that dry off for a little while and then begin with a coat of bright red "metal-protekt" paint from B&Q. Hopefully a couple of coats of that and the calipers & carriers will look spot on match with my brembos.

Pics later as I left my phone indoors during initial prep-work.

Well - It's been moved again!

And despite the car not being washed, I did think the paint was looking fairly good for once (Just clayed and waxed last weekend(

Some other mods + R&R were done as well so in around 5 hours, quite a lot was done - CV boot replaced, coolant drained, dodgy pipe replaced, and refilled, oil change done + flush, 256mm rear brakes offered up and checked would fit, battery moved, rear bumper adjusted, and a tasteful mod on the front added too (pics to follow this evening )

Grinding from N/S Front when turning the steering

Tried to search for anything that may help me on this but can't seem to find anything that sounds the same as what is going on!! <img src='http://ww1.briskoda.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/emoticon-0106-crying.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':'(' />

A couple of weeks ago I thought I heard a knocking noise when I went over a speed bump while leaving work (no noise after that occurrence)

Tonight while driving home I noticed a faint grinding noise coming from the N/S front wheel when turning corners.

Got home and thought i'd check the steering and with the car stationary and in neutral i turned the steering full lock in both directions.

Just before reaching full lock on a left turn I heard a grinding noise coming from what seems to be the N/S front wheel started turning to reverse the lock (heading towards R/H full lock) the grinding continued on the N/S area until I reached just past straight on the steering.

Have been having intermittent steering light sensor illuminated for couple of years now (none for the last 6 or seven months)

Wondering if anyone else has had this problem and if so was it the rack or pump that had gone??

If you could let me know and also a rough cost of getting the problem fixed (don't fancy driving and the steering packing up on me)

Oil Consumption on the edge ?

My Fabia saloon 1.4 16V (BBZ engine) is starting to get into the heavy oil consumption league.

Since undergoing annual service in February its done just over 2,000 miles and I've just topped-it up with a second litre of 10w-40 Magnatec semi synth - I've been topping-up with semi-synth as the engine seems to run quieter and smoother on it.

Its now done 46,000m in total - I do about 6,000 a year mainly round the North-west London suburbs.

Engine oil consumption started to increase at about 25,000 - before then it didn't require top-up between annual services.

I presume the excessive consumption is due to piston ring and/or valve stem wear.

Obviously, the consumption is a fair way away from the handbook tolerances of 1 litre per 600 miles, although i'm not getting any consequential symptoms yet, i'm just wondering whether I should expect these in the near future i.e.lambda sensors going on the blink and catalytic converter getting saturated.

Given that a head and block re-build would be at least a £1,500 i'm wondering whether one of these warranty insurances @ £200 might be worth the investment now.

Once you get oil consumption like I'm currently experiencing how long does it take before the engine reaches the 600 m = 1 litre limit ?

As I've said on previous posts, what sort of pollution is this putting into the atmosphere, with all the heavy metal supplements in modern oils ?

Hi All,
I've ordered a Forge FMIC today as they could supply theirs before Allard could. Just have a couple of questions I was hoping you could help me with please.

Does the Forge kit make use of existing OEM pipes? If so, which ones? Its just the connections between some of the OEM pipes less than perfect- so are there any uprated pipes and or hoses that can be used in conjunction with the Forge kit to ensure no pipes pop off?

If there are any such uprated items, where might I get them please?
Thanks for your help guys.

Yesterday my blower (demister) fan stopped working on settings 1, 2 and 3, but still works on 4, along with the air-con ! Could it be the switch, maybe the fan itself, or an electrical relay which is the culprit ? The rear screen heater/demister also blows its fuses constantly too. Should I just book it in and let a mechanic sort it, or is there a simple answer ?

Fabia 1.9 SDi hard start, white smoke in morning

Hi, my fabia 1.9 SDi has recently started being quite hard to start in the morning.. By hard i mean you have to keep the key turned for 3 seconds or so and then it will start, but it starts in a strange way and doesn't instantly spring to life. Once its started a puff of lingering white smoke comes out of the exhaust and it smells, well the best way I can describe the smell is that its similar to when oil combusts in an air rifle or "dieseling" as its known. But once it has done that first slightly hard/odd start it runs fine all day and starts and stops as normal.

What could cause this?

Afew weeks ago I used diesel and vegetable oil mixture for abit, probably used about 80 litres of vegi, and it was doing this problem a little bit then, but now its almost every morning. But I have had the car only since april so it my of been doing this without vegi anyway, and it was warm weather, and I did mix it with derv or white spirit so it was never 100% veg. I have since been running on derv and put redex and zx1 in with the fuel so injectors should be clean. I have changed the fuel filter also.

Another cause for concern may also be when I had it serviced I noticed that the muppet that did the service over filled my oil. At first I thought well its only abit over and used the car as normal and went on several long motorway journeys. But last week I decided enough is enough and drained some oil out so its at the right level. Could the fact that it was overfilled of caused to much oil pressure and damaged some of the seals?

Is it a glow plug problem? Is there a slight bit of oil getting in somewhere? Coolant has stayed level so I think I can rule that out.

Thankyou, any help much appreciated

BP Ultimate v Shell V Power

First things first im a real lover of the Shell V Power ive used it most of my cars and found it to give the best gains when it comes to unleaded at least. When i had my vrs remapped a week later i had it rolling roaded and at the time it was running on Shell V Power diesel results where 178bhp 285ft-lb which i am very happy with and ever since it has run on Shell V Power. So i got to thinking should i try BP Ultimate Diesel and see what results i get? Seeing as i am going on a rolling road day this saturday i thought it would be a perfect chance to test it and get proper results. I filled up on monday with a full tank of BP Ultimate so far there seems to be less smoke but other than that i cant feel any difference but the proof is in the pudding. I am looking forward to the results to say the least out of intrest what are people thoughts on both fuels ? what do you use? have you noticed any gains?

Collected new 1.2 SE TSI today. Not happy.

Just picked up my wife’s new Fabia 1.2TSI SE and I’m not a happy bunny.

I ordered this car 2 weeks ago (ex stock) based on the June 2010 brochure specifications which I understood to be the current version for the 2011 model year.

The car that was delivered does not match the specification in the brochure despite confirmation that the vehicle’s VIN is for a 2011 model year car.

There was 1 obvious omission on the car. The “chrome effect” interior door handles and vent surrounds were absent. No big deal I thought, but it made me suspicious and I examined the car in a lot more detail. Next I find that there is no tinted windscreen, and no tinted side windows – this is meant to be standard on a SE spec car. I begin to wonder what else may have changed.

I had to accept the car as the dealer has the usual terms in the contract regarding changes of specification before delivery.

I therefore phoned Skoda Customer Service. They confirmed immediately that the “chrome effect” bits and bobs is in fact not being fitted to 2011 model year cars – however they were a bit startled about the tinted windscreen and are now “checking back with the factory”. They told me that the brochure has been amended but the June 2010 version is still the one offered for download on their site and the detailed specification list on their website also shows that tinted glass and windscreen should be fitted.

I am really wound up over this mainly because I had exactly the same experience with my new Octavia Estate which I purchased last year. Stuff that was in the brochure was not on the delivered car. I swore at the time I would never buy another Skoda because of this, but SWMBO wanted to chop in her old Fabia for a new one so I relented. Looks like I never learn from my mistakes.

Rant over. I feel better now.

Fabia VRS front wheel bearing replacement.

I've just done my front wheel bearing, if you know how to use a set of tools then do it yourself you will save a fortune. OEM part from tps is about £70 that includes the wheel bearing in the flange.

Simple how to : (not great)

1 : Before you jack the car up, loosen off the hubnut.
2 : loosen wheel bolts
3 : jack car up & remove wheel
4 : spray lots of wd40 / similar ptfe spray.
5 : on the back of the hub, loosen the two 19mm bolts holding the brake calipers on, remove brake calipar and hang it on the spring up high in the arch with a hook or something.
6 : Loosen the Nut and bolt at the bottom of your suspension / coilovers (so the hub can drop off the bottom of this)
7 : There are a couple of hoses that need to be released from the hub
8 : take the hubnut all the way off
9 : On the left / right of the hub you will see the rod that moves when you turn the hub, remove the nut on top. TIP : if this nut doesnt come off or is fooked, then raise the jack onto the bottom of the rod to hold the nut in place, this will alow you to remove the nut.

10: Turn the hub once remove the nut so you can nock that pin out of the hub leaving that rod hanging loose, move it out the way for now.
11: at the bottom of the hub, you will see 3 13mm nuts ( DO NOT REMOVE THESE) if you remove them, then you will adjust the camber and you dont want that.
12 : Next to those 3 nuts you will see a swivel pin ball joint, remove the nut on top of this, it will be a pain but it must be removed. once the nut is off, turn the hub to the left or right, it should be nice and loose now. Nock that pin out by jacking up JUST the hub, not the wishbone, and then hit that pin very hard if its tight in the hub and the wishbone will drop down about 3 inches.
13: If you havent already done it, slide the driveshaft out, may need to turn the hub at an angle.
14 : With a rubber mallet, if the hub sits around the suspension tightly, just hit it down.

15 : now take your hub to the garage with your new bearing and flange, they will know what to do. They shouldnt charge you any more than 10 quid, its a 10 minute job.

You should now have your hub removed. Here is a picture for you with no hub.

fabia vrs steering angle sensor

hi my friends just replaced the gearbox on my 2005 fabia vrs. As soon as i got in it and drove the esp light came on and the breaks locked on and the esp light started flashing. I drove off again and it was ok but the light stayed on and does not turn off when i press the esp button. ive had the code read and it says steering angle sensor. Could my mate of knocked it or do i just need to get a new sensor? when i start the car the light does not come on its just as soon as i move it comes on and the brakes occasionally come on
