Hi All,

I have seen an iten on www.theskodashop.co.uk that is listed as a "centre console cup holder to replace ashtray" and so my question is has anyone bought one of these.
There is no picture on the site and i need to know if it is the same colour as the rest of the plastic in my Fabia vRS before i purchase it and does it basically do what it says it does (if that last bit makes sense ?)

Thanks

Skoda Touch Up Paint

I've grabbed some of the kosher Skoda touch up paint from the local dealers to sort the stone chips on my car.

Rather dissapointed that Halfords manage to get a nice applicator nib and Skoda manage a brush you could paint wall with but hey ho.

Problem I am having is that ti is pretty thick and thus doesnt run into the chips very well. Anyone know what you can thin it down with that doesnt damage its overall essential structure or alternativley does it get less viscous if you warm it up (not suggesting gas mark 5 for 20 mins )

Turtle Wax Shapoo - opinions?

Hey folks,

As I have mentioned once or twice http://briskoda.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/emoticon-0105-wink.gif I diamondbrited my car. I am coming to the end of my diamondbrite supplied shampoo.

I do however from when I still had my old faithful Peugeot have a shed load of TurtleWax standard shampoo - the stuff from 3/2 at halfords in the big old white bottles, red cap etc.

Whats the general opinion on this stuff, is it any good, does it streak on new cars etc, don't want to bugger up all my hard work using aggresive/inferior products.

This isn't a launch into "I only use shampoo made from unicorn secretions at £40 per ml and a 15 bucket wash method" by the way http://briskoda.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/emoticon-0100-smile.gif

P.S. The typo in the subject is obviously to see who's on the ball

'Rear Lamp' Water Ingress Problem / Detail.......

Bit of a strange one this but thought I would post it up as this is pretty much applicable to any motor out on the market, some cars are worse than other's but the general cause of such a problem is bulb replacement after failure and then poorly re-installed lamps.........

I am basically running around, now and again anyway, in a friends Audi A6 that I have been looking after for some time while he is overseas for a few months, now as you would expect I look after the car as well as my own, having MOT'd it and detailed it up on way too many occasions.

Carl had bought the car second hand but with low mileage but for some reason the Rear Lamps had always had some condensation inside them, I had always assumed poor re-fit of the lamps meaning the seal was not correctly re-fitted.

So, last Friday after work the lamps were looking as follows:

Note the condensation in the Directonal Indicator (DI) / Reverse window:

Also some nice condensation on the Outboard 'dead space' area of the lamp:

This was also the same on the driver's side lamp:

I then removed the lamp to reveal plenty of moss and dirt building up behind the lamp:

The rear of the car then looked as follows over night after some attention with some Megs APC and a few microfibre cloths, followed by a rubber glove over each connector and harness, taped shut to prevent water ingress:

Now I forgot to take some pics of the lamps but on the back of each lamp you have a bulb carrier which houses all the bulbs, this was unclipped and cleaned, the rubber seal that sits inside the channel of the bulb carrier was not correctly seated on the back of the lamp housing, which in my opinion led to the condenstation problem.

I then left the lamps infront of a radiator over night to dry out.

The following morning I cleaned all the lamps up and then re-fitted them:

Job done and looking so much better now, nothing more annoying that having some condenstation within your lamps..........

You can apply a similar method to Head Lamps but remember when re-fitting bulbs that replacing the cap and seal is a must to get it right otherwise the condenstation and moisture within the lamp will just build up again.............

If you think your lamps show any signs of condenstation then don't be afraid to unbolt them and dry them out..............

I can see all the help bits and pieces on how to wash, how to wax etc, but I'm not sure what the overall best-practice is ...

Polishing out swirls - advice please

I have been trying to get rid of some swirls and scratches by hand on my metallic black golf. I on DW i noticed that AG SRP is supposed to be one of the best polishes for removing marks and swirls by hand! However, I am not sure that I am using it right!

I am just using a cloth with the polish rubbing in circular motions for a couple of mins per panel and then leaving for about 5mins to dry to a haze and then removing with a microfibre cloth. Is this method completely useless? Should I invest in some applicator pads? If so, which ones? How long should I be working each body panel? How many times should I reapply the polish? Which direction (circular or up and down) should I be applying/removing it in? How hard should I be rubbing?

I really have no idea, as i'm sure you can all tell! Any advice would be appreciated?

I've tried to blend some T-cut in, but nothing happened.. So maybe I'm doing it wrong? O.o

I was reading about Baker21's latest detail last night (a red Octy vRS) and it reminded me that I owe him a massive thank you.

I went for a job interview towards the end of last year, and was asked to give a 10 minute presentation on a subject of my choice.

I picked something that I'm enthusiastic about and that is close to my heart.....

.....the two bucket wash method!

Anyway I pinched a few pics from one of Simon's detail write ups to put into my PowerPoint presentation, so I guess I should publically thank him seeing as I got the job! I started it in january and I'm loving it so far.

I have managed to get a set of Mk4 Golf aero wiper arms off fleabay for a good price, but they both need a bit of paint-one of them look as if it has been rubbing on something by the base, and is back to bare metal. I have contacted the seller, and he has said that I can send them back, but *reckoned* they were in good condition! Deciding to keep them now, so although a simple job I`m sure, what is the best way to go about this? I reckon a sanding down, and a satin black spray can would suffice? Would I need any laquer at all(guess not) Just seen Hammerite do a satin black spray can, would this be any better at keeping any rust at bay?
Paint Protection Film - How do you rate it?

Someone's sig caught my eye -- they mentioned venture shield. Found out what that is (forum search )

What i can't find is -- how do these films affect the look of the car? I'm guessing, the parts of the car that get film applied have all wax / sealant stripped off before applying the adhesive directly to the cars clearcoat. So how do the rest of the car panels look when polished / sealed / waxed vs. the film covered panels?

I'm guessing cleaning the film covered panels is normally just a hose down, maybe some light shampoo mix occassionally?

Guess im just looking for real world experience of these. £400 buys a lot of megs / autoglym products instead, if the film only lasts a year then looks naff!

Wet sanding & polishing MX5 defective paintwork! Pics

Well, this morning was bright & sunny down in deepest Devonshire, so decided after being told "Do what you like" to have a go at wet sanding an area or two on the MX5, which overall kind of let the car down when you got up close.... The panels were the flat bit which I think is part of the hood, above the bootlid, and the offside rear wing top....

Now, I did a SHEDLOAD of research into wet sanding before I undertook this, so please do the same.... It is very easy to totally f**k up your paintwork using this kind of last resort method to bring back dead paintwork from the grave. Bear in mind this was purely experimental, and the finish is not meant to be crystal clear 100% - Just a marked improvement on before.

This is how it went.....

After wiping the overnight rain off, this is what I was faced with

First stage was a decent, low pressure, application of a wet 2000 grit piece of wet & dry

And I definitely thought "f**k!" when I wiped it clean as it looked well bad (Should have known it would of course!)

Which was followed after wiping clean by the same with 2500 grit W&D

I then set about it with my DAS6 orbital and a small, high cut pad with my strongest cutting menzerna gunk

And I was pleasantly chuffed with the finish after just that.

Finally a similar polishing up with final gloss MZ polish just to be sure.

My next shot came out badly, but looked the same as the one 2 above really. I decided then whilst everything was out to do the top of the rear wing - In a bad way!

The usual W&D mess!

And the leftovers once all cleaned off!

Set about it again with the same machine polishing setup

Some areas of cloudiness so did a little more wet & dry in those smaller areas, and polished up again.

An idea of improvement, trying to get a reflection from where it was real cloudy before.

This afternoon I hope to W&D specific areas of bird-poo damage, on the bootlid.

Paintwork damage - perspective required.

The car dealer has scratched by car! How should I react? I am trying not to get too upset and need some opinions or advice.

The car was taken to the dealers for a headlamp adjustment. When the car was returned it had been washed. Only when I got home did I notice the light scratches or swirl marks in the middle of the bonnet! Due to the failing light I have not had an opportunity to inspect the rest of the car. Some would say it’s nothing, but to a new car owner whose paintwork was perfect, it looks awful. When you clean the car properly and it’s all shiny you could see it then. There are at least 4 marks, three are maybe 4" long going across the car (left to right) and have a slight arc (as if grit had been present during handwashing/drying of the bonnet).

My car is only 4 weeks old and has been hand washed by myself every weekend; the paintwork was perfect. I read the forums on the best way to keep the car looking its best. I bought the gear and cleaning the car using the recommended method to avoid paintwork damage such as scratches or swirl marks.

The paintwork damage has really got me upset.

The dealer has advised my to bring the car back so he can see the damage.

What would you advise? Is this worth getting upset about? If the dealer covers the marks with polish, would this be a satisfactory solution? Please can you put this into perspective, I am always worried about overreacting.

What are my rights?
Should I or have I a course of action other that talking to the dealer?

I will post photographs, but this will require cleaning the car and good weather and light. Also I am away for a few days and cannot do this immediately.

Any advice appreciated, thank you.

Hi all.

Which one do I apply first the G220. I have bought bothe Meguires #80 and 83# Mirror glaze products. Do I apply the Meguires speed glaze #80 first or the dual action cleaner/polish #83? Not sure. The #83 is more course than the #80...... so im guessing #83 then the #80?

Sounds confusing sorry.

Anyone else know?

Cheers,

My First Proper Detail

Just thought I would share with you my first attempt at giving my car its first proper little detail. This was my first go at claying, and I have to say it really does give impressive results

Car was washed with turtlewax shampoo, followed by a final rinse, which was left wet as my new clay is the Bilt Hamber Soft clay which only requires water as a lubricant. A bucket of warm water helped keep the clay in a workable consistency in this colder weather (well it was about 6 degrees - so not that bad). The amount of grit that came off the boot lid was awesome, certainly the most contaminated panel on my car! (Even more so than the wheels, which I decided to attack at the same time as there were a few stubborn brake dust spots).

Once the car had been clayed I then polished the car using Autoglym Super Resin polish. Having never clayed the car before, this process of polishing really showed me how smooth the paint was, and it was much easier to get a great shine. Once this had been done, I then waxed the car using Collinite 476s - first time I have used this, and for me it was easy to apply and remove afterwards (made sure I followed the one panel at a time rule). I also used the Collinite on the wheels, as I have used proper wheel waxes before but without great results, so I will just see how this wax copes on there. Windows were given some Halfords rain repellent (I find it works the best of all). Tyres and front splitter were treated with some Autoglym Instant Tyre dressing to finish it off.

Now for a few pics, I didnt manage to get any really reflective shots as it was getting dark, and hunger was setting in!

Just squirted a little water on the spoiler to see how the wax repelled the water, and some nice beading was achieved.

How would you bond them to the plastic lights on the Octy?

Not 100% I will do this yet, but my car is black and have seen another with them on and really like the way it looked.

Despite some peeps disliking them, I am just after a good way to stick them on - any suggestions?

First Detail With G220 and Menzerna

My G220 kit arrived Saturday morning. Car was washed, clayed, dried and wheeled into the garage.
No before or during pics as I was a bit nervous attacking panels with the 500 Watt monster that is the G220

I used Menz Power Finish on a Menz Orange pad, then Menz Final Finish on a Menz yellow pad.
Car only had very light swirls so not a major correction. The above combo worked a treat. LSP was Megs NXT2.0 Wax

BIG new boy thread...

Hi there everyone - recently bought myself a 1.4 fabia... nothing fast, I know, but i'm only young so insurance must come first.

Got quite a few questions I need help with:

1. Removed the fabia badge the other day but having problems getting rid completely... there's still a very feint outline of the lettering - any ideas on how to remove this?

2. skoda badge on the rear... can thid be popped off without leaving any marks or holes?

3. My car's black - is it the "black magic" paint or do they do other varients?

4. Cleaning wise... what's the best way of doing it? I've done a wash with autoglym shampoo, dried off and then auto glym polished... how is best to polish and just make my car look the best possible? I've been applying the polish in circles (size of a CD) and leaving it all over the car for about 10 minutes, looks real matte black, then buff off all over - it does look a load better but just wondered if my method's correct?

5. Got a REALLY annoying noise from the centre of my dash somewhere... like a sort of creaking noise, always there and it's doing my head in, any clues?

6. Finally... just any good, subtle, not chavvy mods I can get away with? I was thinking about black grille surround but not sure how to remove it, anything else? Possibly slightly tinted front lights and some blue/white bulbs but again, not sure how to remove the light casing.

Thanks alot if you've read all this - as you can probably tell im not very mechanically minded but I just want my car looking as nice as possible for as little cost as possible.

Thanks in advance!

Quick brush-up of a 1997 523i

Had my work cut out here. Helping a mate try and clean up a 523i he bought. Was not sure what year it would be before I arrived but was faced with a swirly 1997 black beast. Couple of bad rust spots as well, and a rather manky bootlid that I never touched as it was a repaint job only!

Nasty rear nearside C pillar

Not bad for the money it cost, at all!!

All in all this took only 4.5 hours or so and in that time I :-

clayed the car

washed again

dried off again

machine polished (obviously not 100% job due to time)

Washed again

Dried again

Polished inside of glass

Trim gel on all the plastics

touched up small chips with black touch up paint

So all-in-all, not a bad way to spend a morning/lunchtime. Hope it sells on again for a good profit now.
