I like to have some wire about for general use, like wiring up extra power supplies, lights etc.

I've ran out of the stuff I got years ago from a parts place closing down and I don't know what rating the wire was. I'm after some wire I can use for different stuff in the octy without it going up in flames etc lol. So what's the best sized stuff to get? There's stuff like normal pvc coating and thin wall what's best?

Pioneer AVIC units

Hello all,

I have been looking at getting a new stereo for my MK1 octy, loads of choice, but came across this on the bay,

http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Car/GPS-Navigation/AVIC-F900BT

Question for you all,

1- will it fit a MK1

2- What are your thoughts on these head units?

I am looking at anything that has bluetooth and that will play/connect to my ipod properly (had a cheap head unit that was fine, but kept shutting off and would not play either my ipod or iaudio correctly)

Sat nav would be a nice bonus I think, hence why I looked up the pioneers.

Any help would be appreciated!

Skoda Insurance and Modifications...

Hi all, hope you can help me aleviate my disappointment...

Was hoping to get springs and RARB for my Monte at the end of this month. Preferably H&R springs as I've read the Eibachs are a little harsh. Rang Skoda Insurance to get the all clear, only to be told (by a less than convincing operator) they wouldn't insure these mods and the entire policy would be invalidated in the event of a claim?! :-(

Had a search on here and found at least one member who has the same mods (with Eibacshs) plus aftermarket alloys who said Skoda were super helpful. I'll be checking again tonight/tomorrow, but I hoped people could shed any light on their experience of Skoda Insurance and mods so I know if I'm going to be stuck with standard spec or not

Thanks all

iTunes to SD Card Programming for Bolero Unit

I am awaiting delivery of my new Yeti Elegance and thought I would get an SD card charged with my music. I run iTunes on an Apple iMac, all music is in AAC format but I have duplicated music into MPEG audio files - approx 1,000 tunes. I would like to have these available on the Bolero unit in Artist - Album - Tune format to make it easy to choose an artist and album then play that album, or choose individual tracks if preferred.
Question is how to do that? If I simply "drag" the MPEG files to an SD card will it retain the info to provide Artist, Album, Tune info so I can see that info on the Bolero display and make my choices or do I have to do something different? Anyone done this before? Is it even possible?

The next generation of Bolero, Columbus et al

Looks like our humble Bolero and Columbus units are going to get a very nice upgrade once the Golf VII is out:

From: http://www.autoblog.com/2012/02/01/next-volkswagen-infotainment-system-to-use-capacitive-touchscree/

http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2012/02/01-mib-vw-628.jpg

The next Volkswagen Golf will be chock-full of standard and optional technology features, but its all-new Modular Infotainment System has the potential to set a new benchmark for both high-end and entry-level navigation, entertainment and connectivity.

Three new systems will be available when the 2013 Golf goes on sale in Europe towards the end of this year, starting with a five-inch touchscreen and moving up to a 5.8-inch unit and finally a range-topping eight-inch system. Each unit will be equipped with a capacitive touchscreen, with the eight-inch version packing an 800x450 resolution screen, multitouch functionality and the same NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor set to debut in future Audi models, including the next A3. Making use of that high-powered chipset will be revamped 3D graphics for menus and mapping, with free nav updates available for three years and the ability to activate additional features after the initial vehicle purchase.

Handwriting recognition will also be included in the system, much like the system already offered by Audi, which will allow users to skip the soft keyboard and write out destinations and point-of-interest searches. Additionally, VW is looking to include MirrorLink functionality (which essentially mirrors your phone's screen on the navigation display), as expected, Internet-connectivity through smartphone tethering will be an option, along with the ability to create a WLAN hotspot.

Finally, VW tells Autoblog it plans to integrate proximity sensors into the head unit – similar to Cadillac's CUE system – switching over from "display mode" to "operating mode" when it detects the driver or passenger's hand moving towards the screen. The proximity sensors could also detect which side of the screen your hand is placed and then highlight specific features for easier selection.

Naturally, pricing for each system won't be released until the Golf goes on sale in Europe this fall and hits the U.S. sometime in 2013, but VW representatives made it clear that these systems will be priced aggressively in order to compete with other feature-rich competitors.

Octavia II USB install - locations?

I'm still continuing the install of my Pure 300Di and, subject to finally getting the right cable from Halfords (who, along with Pure have been incredibly helpful) it looks like it's all going to go OK

In an attempt to make it tidy rather than having lose wires kicking about, I tried to fit a Neutrik-mounted USB socket into the dash-top box

http://thumbs4.ebaystatic.com/m/m1IyOP4uqPD3G2WxhA3Dz2g/140.jpg

Unfortunately - and I've learnt this the hard way - there's insufficient space behind the dash-top box to get the thing in.

I wanted somewhere that I could put the phone/drive/ipod out of sight and didn't want to put it in the glove box as a) as it'll probably be the phone I'll probably be wanting to connect and disconnect every time I get in and out of the car and I'm old and fat and not as flexible as I once was which doesn't fit well with a).

Has anyone managed to fit a USB socket tidily in that box, or found somewhere else to mount one rather than having leads hanging about? Unfortunately I've not got a jumbobox as that would be ideal.

I've got a few ideas but I'd rather ask for suggestions before taking anymore power tools to my poor Octavia

No sound from retrofitted Columbus

Hi All,

I installed a Columbus into a Superb today for another forum member. The car has the 'Sound System' - badge on speakers installed which I assume is similar to, if not the same as Dynaudio? It has amp under the passenger seat, plus an array of three microphones in the headliner.

The Columbus is reporting faults against all speaker outputs in VCDS scan, and there is no sound at all from radio, media etc.

I hope this is just the coding is wrong. I have tried numerous combinations and permutations of sound system type etc in the long coding using VCDS however none of them seem to be correct.

Was wondering if anyone has this setup (Superb with 'Sound System' and Columbus) and could share their coding, or point me towards the right info. I have tried following guides for install in Golf with Dynaudio etc thus far to no avail.

Everything else seems to work: climate control display comes up on screen when changing temp, OPS display works, GPS picks up satellites, MFD shows nav info etc. Just no sound.

Currently running 39xx series firmware, will try a downgrade to 26xx if that helps but I am hoping its just coding...

Thanks in advance.

I seem to be having a problem with my Columbus unit that is progressively getting worse, but I can't find anything on this forum or the net regarding it. Maybe I'm just searching for the wrong thing!

On switching on and going to 'Map', my Columbus sees many satellites (usually between 7 & 11) and tracks most of them (5-10 usually). 3D tracking right from the start.

It soon starts to lose these and the number tracked soon drops (within a few minutes), the accuracy starts to wane until none are tracked. However, it can still 'see' a decent number of satellites and the hidden menu shows that the receiver is connected (see pictures).
Off the top of my head, I can't remember what SW version I have on there, but I updated it long before the problems started. I think it might be 381x or possibly 276x, I'll check if the answer is needed to progress this further.

I have VCDS if a scan is needed, but (apart from an open circuit fault caused by only having one aerial connected, there is nothing there).

Thanks in advance.

1st Time Sub/Amp Install ~ Help/Advice Please

I've finally decided to have a go at installing some better sound in the Octavia. Its already got a better head unit, an Alpine ida-X001 which improved the sound quite dramatically, but i've just bought a 2nd hand amp and sub. I've always put my own head units and speakers in, but this is the 1st time with an amp and sub, so there's lots of questions i need some help with. I've included various pics and links to try and help.

Set up:
Octavia Mk2 4x4.
Alpine ida-x001
Ghost GCA4150 4 channel 600w amp (i can't find any info on this anywhere....)
JBL GT4 10" 1000W sub
Pioneer TS-A171Ci Speakers (still to be purchased)

I use the car for hauling bikes around so i need the sub to be removeable and the amp to be out of the way. I'm thinking of putting the amp in the rear side pockets of the boot, or on the outer cover, as i've read of the need for cooling??
Something like this:

http://www.pimpmyskoda.co.uk/V2Images/ModsICE/Amp/DSCF0019.JPG

For installing the speakers and soundproofing i'll be following Matt@theforces guide.

These are the amp connections:

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7153/6770406743_5c77fe3272_b.jpg
Untitled by ritcheyp20, on Flickr

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7018/6770405641_16a9ba7e02_b.jpg
Untitled by ritcheyp20, on Flickr

I'm not entirely sure how to wire them to the speakers and the sub
The rear of the Alpine:

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1301/4680037131_bcafc2d8da.jpg

So any thoughts, help, guides, etc will be more than welcome. The guides i've found the amp power cable have been for the Mk1, is the Mk2 that much different?
I presume i need to run the cables from the head unit to the sub and then back to the speakers, how then do the tweeters connect up?

Sorry for the questions, but this is the 1st time playing with amps and a sub.

Has any one else fitted one of these in an 06 Octavia vRS, (with pictures if possible) ? Am I missing something ?
Am going to attempt to fit tomorrow and will post some pictures to better explain situation.

My nice big SD card arrived today and I've been trying it out with the Amundsen in my Octavia. I was under the impression that it will read AAC files but it only seems to find the MP3s. I could be wrong but from digging on Google I found some references to other VAG units playing AAC but I wasn't sure if this was with a newer firmware version or over MDI. So my questions are, will the Amundsend see AAC files with the right firmware, and how do I find my FW version? Also, if this is the case, will it work with SD cards or only over MDI (which I don't have unfortunately). Any help would be appreciated.

Part number for Octy front passenger-side speaker?

Hi all,

The passenger-side door speaker in my 2003 Octy vRS seems to have developed a horrible wallowing noise

So I'm going to replace it but rather than mess with custom speakers I thought I'd do a simple replacement.

Can anyone recommend a supplier (other than a Skoda dealer) or have the part number? I've done a quick Google search but could find much.

Cheers,
None of the clips seem to line up anywhere to fit into anything. Installed in the orientation as shown in the pic, the top bar of the dash with the screw holes, drops lower than the hole in the facia preventing the radio cage fitting.

Columbus Turned Itself Off and GPS Position is Wrong?

A friend of mine has a Columbus unit and he asked me for some advice as he knows I have one too.

His unit turned its self off one day and immediately turned back on. Almost like a "re-boot" is how he descibed it.

Everything works and there appears to be no problems but he has noticed he GPS position is slightly "behind".

He says when it first re-booted the GPS was out by miles but pretty quickly it sorted itself out (within a few mins). However he has noticed that the GPS position compared to actual position is now about "5 or 6 car lengths" behind so he would miss the required turning when the nav is in use.

He reports no previous problems and the unit has never done anything like this before.

The only thing I could think of was if the unit had overheated as ive heard they can sometimes re-boot with quite a loud unexpected bang. He says thats not possible as he had only been in the car a short time (10 mins max).

Ive offere to do a scan to see if that brings any error codes up but has anyone any other ideas?

How do you re-set the GPS position? (Is it even possible?)

Thanks in advance

Columbus confusion...

Help!

I've just bought an Octavia VRS with a Columbus headunit installed. It didn't come with a manual but after some button pushing and internet research I have it mostly figured out. What a great piece of kit!

The thing thats throwing me is this whole firmware/update maps business. Although up to date maps would be great, what I really need is 7 digit postcode entry. I live in the sticks where work takes me to some out of the way places and REALLY don't want to have to resort to my old Garmin nav stuck on the windscreen... How embarassing!!!

So would this require an expensive trip to a dealer?

What firmware/software do I need to get up to date?

How does one even upgrade firmware?

Whats the cost effective way to do it?

Hi there
Hopefully an easy one. Has anybody used the devices that 'learn' the difference on the electrical system when the engine is running and not to provide a switched live effectively and are they any good? I see Halfords sell them for 20 quid.

If so would piggybacking on the 12v socket be a suitable place to attach it to avoid any Canbus errors. I want it for my DAB Highway unit that I want to mount in the glovebox.

How to eliminate alternator noise via lighter socket?

Hi

This Christmas I received a Brodit car mount for my Samsung Galaxy S2 so I can use Google Navigation and Spotify in my Fabia vRS. Trouble is, the car mount has a power lead that connects to the lighter socket in order to charge the phone and this in turn creates a humming noise with a pitch that matches engine revs coming through the car speakers via aux in of my stereo.

I was thinking about the best way to eliminate this noise. Of course, the easy answer is to disconnect the mount from the 12v socket, but as the device is running GPS, this would run down the battery pretty quick (Android phones are not the best for battery life as is).

I did a bit of digging about on the net and it seems that if I purchased one of these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Pyramid-NS12-InLine-Noise-Suppressor/dp/B0007V5X4U and also a lighter socket extension lead, I could wire in the noise suppressor into the extension lead to save messing with the vehicle wiring itself. Then simply plug the car mount into the extension. Of course I'd need a suitable earth location as well, but not sure where best to do this?

Before I start, I wondered if anyone had any thoughts or better suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Also when I try and play back a DVD is says that the car is in motion with a blue screen so no picture is displayed.

I weuld appreciate being pointed in the right direction with these two issues

DAB Radio / Digital TV

Having spent a few days scouring this forum and the net for enlightenment on the subject of Skoda and DAB / DAB+ radio I found these links;
http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/403286958/Car_Radio_for_2010_SKODA_Superb.html

There's a fairly long inventory with different specs but in view of the fact that the L & K models include digital TV I thought that it might be of interest.

Not having seen the back of a Columbus or the like I have no idea what similarity there might be in the numerous leads.

In theory, access to digital TV should give access to the radio stations which transmit alongside that but as an uninformed layman I wonder what sort of TV signal you can expect without having someone on the roof re aiming the aerial after every bend in the road.

Anyone have any experience with Usb/SD Card adaptors for OEM headunits?

Hello guys and girls,

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with using a USB/SD adaptor in conjunction with the OEM Headunits, like the following:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CTASKUSB001-Skoda-Fabia-Octavia-OEM-USB-Interface-/150469884196?pt=UK_In_Car_Technology&hash=item2308b43924

I previously had a usb/sd headunit in my MkI VRS, however it has gone a bit bonkers of late and i have had to revert back to the OEM Symphony unit. I've had a look around for a replacement headunits that will match the "Black on Green" lighting setup and has USB/SD, however the closest match i can find is going to set me back about £100.

Ideally i would like to keep the headunit as OE as possible, however USB/SD playback is a must have for me, as i dont really have much of my music on CD these days.

As such, i was wondering if anyone had any opinions or experience with devices such as the above, as a means of keeping the OE look, whilst adding USB/SD functionality.

Cheers

Bulkhead grommet problem

Hi all,

Having trawled the forum for the best way to run a wire from the engine bay to the interior, most have said that a grommet exists behind the pollen filter housing.

Now, I have found this, no problem, but mine is stuffed with that grey multi-coloured insulation stuff and I cant poke through to the glovebox, which ever way i push my coat hanger!

Is this cos I have climatronic, so more in there, or am I missing a trick?

Any help would be appreciated before I take off the windscreen wipers and the other skuttle to see if i can find a way behind the drivers side!

Thanks

Nextbase Click7 Duo DVD player

Hi

After reading many reviews re which in car DVD player to purchase I settled on the aforementioned. Question is:-

Has anyone had experienec with these in an Octavia - the headrest locking system sounds great but my fear is, because the top and rear of the headrest faces foreward slightly, the actual DVD screens will thus face upward slightly when in place on the mountings.

So.......the kids will winge they can't see their screens properly or brake their necks to see the screens.

Are the fittings adjustable enough to compensate for this?

Thanks in advance

Oh, and wireless or wired headphones?

Which headunit?

I`m considering a new full screen headunit. I`m after either double din or single with motorized screen. If its a double din it needs to be a removable facia. Ideally it would have. . .
Rear USB socket
Option for green illumination buttons (if it has any)
Option to upload logo/photo for start up/background
Anyone bought one recently that has these or some of these features? Pointers?

Connecting into a diverse twin Fakra..?

I find myself as is so often the case, with the dash of my Octavia (2009) spread across the garage, with connectors that don't connect. On a Sunday. When there's pressures to do 100 other things.

I've bought myself a Pure Highway 300Di DAB radio, which (in case you don't know) interfaces the standard radio to supply DAB and DAB+ and also interface to an iPod/iPhone/USB/mp3 player.

The 300Di is rather clever in that its aerial can either be a whizzy active DAB thingy (supplied, fugly) or make use of the original aerial. Output is either pre-out/pre-in or FM. The FM is quite clever too, as rather than simply broadcasting and hoping your car radio will pick it up, it delivers it directly onto the car aerial cable which is routed through the 300Di itself. It can, if you choose, mute all other channels so the only FM frequency being delivered to your radio is the output of the 300Di (be that DAB or iPod etc).

If you're happy to use the Pure aerial and the radio has pre-in, then there is no need to touch the original aerial on the car. If however you don't fancy using the Pure aerial (I don't) and the radio doesn't have pre-in (it doesn't), the only option is to route the route the car aerial through the 300Di.

Problem - the 300Di has traditional DIN aerial connectors (one in, one out), the Bolero in the Octavia uses twin Fakras and AFAIK the Bolero has diversity. I want to connect in the 300Di, and I don't want to compromise the radio performance of the Bolero.

Any clever ideas?

Or do I just sling the kit in the missus' Fabia I (which has a "traditional" DIN aerial and should be a *very* simple install) and pretend that I bought it for her birthday next week?

Note: whilst it would be nice to have Radio 4 extra, the key thing was to have the iPod interface ( which I presumed would be easy as it didn't require the radio to have a pre-in). I guess the other option would be to give up on it and replace the Parrot CK3000 evolution with an MKi9200.
