Default National Meet - Spring BBQ/Camping Weekend

As mentioned in the National Meet thread, we have now organised a Spring National Meet. All are welcome, and it is hoped we can make sure things are available for families.

* * * * * Don't forget to check out the updates at the bottom of this post * * * * *

Dates
Saturday 5th - Monday 7th May 2007 (Bank Holiday Weekend)

Venue
The meet will be held at Burrs Activity Centre, which is in Bury - about 15 miles north of Manchester.
Full address is....
Burrs Activity Centre Ltd.
Woodhill Road
Bury
Lancashire
BL8 1DA

Burrs Activity Centre

This was the venue for last year's summer bbq - clicky here
This site is relatively central and has good motorway access routes. There's a pub within 50yds of the Activity Centre

Accommodation
Camping is available on site, and we have also made a half booking of the bunkhouse (dormitory style accommodation with rooms to be allocated to suit the mix of male/female/families etc) which will sleep up to 18 people. If there is sufficient demand, we can extend this to take the full bunkouse for 34 people. More details of the accommodation can be found on the Burrs web-site above.

Plan
A rough outline plan is detailed below, but this will be fairly flexible depending on what you want. Of course some things will have to be pre-booked, but we will try to react to what the group wants at the time, and see how well the weather treats us.

Sat
11.30 - 13.00 Arrive at Burrs, and unload / setup camp etc
13.00 - 14.00 Lunch (sandwiches, on site pub or Activity Centre cafe)
14:30 - 17:30 A bit of a drive
17.30 - Late BBQ (and maybe a few beers). There is a Tesco about 5 min drive away so no need to worry about driving all day with your food/beer in the back of the car.
There is a function room in the bunkhouse which we can make use of if the weather is particulary bad.

Sun
9.30 - 10.30 Breakfast (Activity Centre cafe or campers can cook your own)
10.30 - 16.00 I will keep this time flexible for now. There are plenty of things to do on site (walking, industrial heritage trail, orienteering) as well as a full range of outdoor activities (climbing wall, abseiling, canoeing, kayaking, raft-building, archery etc) although some of these will need to be pre-booked - more details to follow.
For any families with younger (and maybe not so young) children, the East Lancs Railway runs past the site, and the main station is about a mile and a half away. They will be running a Thomas the Tank Engine weekend over the bank holiday - East Lancashire Railway - Timetables
Further suggestions are welcome, and I believe Makefish has a few ideeas up his sleeve.
16:00 onwards. What we do on the second evening is open to suggestions. A drive out to a local pub for some food, a takeaway night, the onsite pub, another b-b-q, or if anyone wants to volunteer for some mass catering we could eat in the bunkhouse.

Mon
9.30 - 10.30 Breakfast (Activity Centre cafe or cook your own)
10.30 onwards Pack up and depart (unless you are feeling up to some further outdoor activities).

Prices
Bunkhouse - £20 per person total for 2 nights. Sorry but you will have to pay for two nights even if you only want to come for one.
Camping - £5 per person per night
Breakfast - £4 per day

Please note that neither Briskoda nor Burrs Activity Centre Limited can be held responsible for any loss or damage to your personal property or vehicles.
Whilst the campsite is located in a country park, the surrounding areas are urban, and the local youths do occasionally hang around. The gate to the car parking area will be locked on Saturday evening.
However, the camping field and car parking area are not a fully secure compound, and as such care should be taken with valuables etc.
Please also note that Burrs Activity Centre is in a Country Park with access to the general public. There will also be young children using the Activity Centre facilities, so PLEASE drive carefully and responsibly in this area.

This is expected to be a popular meet so get your names down fast. It is only available to Freedom members initially, but will be moved to general release after a few days.
I will need pre-payment for the bunkhouse bookings - details of payment methods to follow - but camping and breakfasts can be paid for when you arrive.
Fire away with any questions you have and I will do my best to answer them.
Please post your names below with details of numbers, bunkhouse/camping requirements, and whether you want breakfasts.
I'll start the list going....

Andy 2407 + SWMBO + 2 HCs (bunkhouse and breakfasts please)

Updates
02/04 - Emily has very kindly offered a cider delivery service - see this thread

13/04 - Bunkhouse cancelled due to insufficient numbers. Camping still OK. Can always try to re-book the bunkhouse if there is demand so please add your name to the list and PM me if you are interested

17/04 - Saturday evening charity auction announced - see post 88 in this thread

29/04 - A bit short of tent space - see post 128

01/05 - Information on outdoor actvities and fishing - see post 162

I can also bring a full badminton set, if this is meant to be an activity weekend. Comes with nets, poles, 4 racquets, shuttles and even lines to mark out a court.

If it corners anything like the hire car Grande Punto I had, I will not be too worried.

lol... it's the sporting... (I drove one of the 'normal' ones too , and it was poor) was quoted as better by some motoring journo's in a group test with the vRS.... I test drove it, and it ****es all over my vRS, sharp turn in, little understeer, much better body control, (the electric steering is a bit lifeless tho..) your's however, well.... I think I'll leave shifty to give you a run for your money... I may have the angel remap in by may (170bhp) but i still wouldn't catch the mongrel

There is a hard standing area / parking area next to the activity centre camping field where you could put a caravan. I'm not sure whether we still have electric hookups availabe though but I will find out for you later in the week.
As you mention, within the Burrs Country Park there is also a new Caravan Club site which only opened last year. It is ony a couple of hundred yards from where we will be so feel free to use this if you are a member - its your choice.

Is this bit

However, the camping field and car parking area are not a fully secure compound, and as such care should be taken with valuables etc.

Just a little disclaimer? Is it a rough area?

Went to Bury yesterday and they eat Black Puddings like donuts. Lots of 80+ year olds racing round with zimmer frames, black pudding in hand and fags in mouth. Forget healthy eating this town turns the healthy eating brigades logic on its head . Bury market is close by, and world famous, see here World Famous Bury Market - Open every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. It is a great market if thats your thing. Oh and the tripe is rated too. Outside of Bury the countryside is great. Don`t know if im coming but have a great weekend!

I guess in this day and age we have to cover ourselves but there are a lot of places where I would be more worried about leaving my car.
We certainly didn't have any problems last time (but that may be due to the fact that we were up drinking half the night anyway!) and I wouldn't let it put you off.

Good to see plenty of interest in this. Many of the members that have put their names down so far came to last summer's bbq meet so it must have been a good meet!
Im going to be working in Spain for the next few days, but keep any questions you have coming, and I'll catch up on this thread when I get back on Thurs if I don't manage to get online while Im away.
