getting rid of brake dust

I have just cleaned my wheels in preparation to use the poorboys wheel sealant on them. However, I have had trouble removing spats of brake dust with just my autoglym shampoo and a sponge, it seems pointless to seal the wheels unless they are spic and span so what can I use to get off the stubborn bits? I have done a search but alas I remain clueless.

Would a proper wheel brush do it? or is there a tried and tested product?

Hi Pixington,

It's probably tar spots? Try some tar remover, or autoglym/other make alloy wheel cleaner.

I dunno, it's tiny little black spats in the crevices almost like someone has blown them on from a distance with a straw.

I know I have a strange imagination

Sounds like tar. Tar remover - removes tar.

Autoglym tar remover is also pretty good at removing brake dust.

Also, try giving them a polish with Super Resin Polish or similar, makes a huge difference to the sparkle of the wheel as well as removing the grubby bits.

As a last resort, try something like wonder wheels...

Treat them with wax first when they're clean, makes brake dust a doddle to removington.

This is what I have just found in the cupboard. I followed the instructions and it didn't really want to know

It didn't touch the tiny sprayed spots but did work on the couple of slightly bigger marks. I guess I'm off to Halfords to get some alloy cleaner and maybe an alloy brush, although I don't really want to use one.

Another vote for autoglym tar remover - Only autoglym product I rate highly really. Also good at degunking after badges have been removed. Just soak part of a cloth and rub gently over the spot - It will start to run, then rub a bit harder and the whole spot should come off. Just be thankful you don't have a silver car where tar spots appear all over the paintwork too...

I had similar marks and had to hit them in the end with Wonder Wheels (nasty stuff). The car was like this when I bought it. After that after a seal you should be fine.

Ive just used Muc-Off (bicycle cleaner) on my alloys. Works bloody brilliantly!!

The alloys were in a right state with brake dust spots all over, after a Muc-Off and scrub theyre as new.

AG Tar Remover + AG Wheel Cleaner (orange label) = clean wheels

Mr P has some of this for his bike, maybe I should give it a try.

For those that continue to recommend Autoglym tar remover.....I've tried it and it don't work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Make sure you spray it on one wheel at a time and don't leave the stuff on for too long

I have finally got the chance to use my newly bought Autoglym alloy cleaner and special brush. These marks are still not budging

The only time one came off was when Mr P got his nail under it but this is not something I want to do. Is it worth taking it to a specialist who can take the wheels off and do something with them?

Sounds like you need to be more vigourous with the brush.

Spray on, agitate the solution and leave for about 30 seconds, agitate more vigourously then spray off.

Once all this is done, make sure you clean the wheels more often. Any more than 2 weeks between washes and mine are a pain to clean.

As Dave_Fox has said Muc-off works wonders, I use a brush aswell from a muc-off bike cleaning kit. Also works well removing all the crud from the insides on wheels archs.

I have been told its pritty much the same as oven cleaner (Thats why you dont leave it on your bike paint for to long). May be worth raiding the kitchen
