Default Suitable tyre width for 8.5J ?

Pondering some different alloys for the New Year. I've currently got my eye on some 17" BBSes, but they're quite wide at 8.5J.

A 215 is probably the widest rubber I can comfortably fit in the Ibiza's arches, but would this be a little too stretched? Ideally I'd go for 215/40/17.

Steve

Hi Steve, I have 8" wide on my Fabia, with 215's on, and they are very stretched. They are 18". 245's will go on an 8.5 inch rims

I'd go 225, or 235 myself.

Cheers Dave - will 225s go under the arches though, without rubbing issues?

Depends on the sidewall profile I imagine Steve. Pop a wheel on its own on the car and see what sort of clearance you have. I run the 18"'s on 215/35/18, and there is room for some more width. Use the frredom members tyre size calc to see what will actually be ok, and then choose a size you think will fit. Or find a friendly tyre place so you can try them for size.
