Default Window Tinting - Amendments to regulations

Denis. Enlightening. So, basically a copper who pulls me over needs one of those light meter devices in his car to test me, else he can't prove anything... It doesn't mention the fact that dark tints make rural unlit night driving a real hindrance. In my case they remove a good 50% of my field of vision whilst driving (not good )

Cumbria police have taken delivery of their light measuring widget. I visited them today and they have agreed to test mine to see if they are legal (I think they aren't) once it is back from calibration. The officer who looked at them drives an umarked Tavia and remarked on the fact that my windows looked OK but he will measure them for me to see if I need to remove them. Up to press I have cancelled my removal appointment!

oooh - someone's stealing Denis' thunder... [runs away]

As for me, I'm getting my tints checked out tomorrow morning, and then should get booked in for early March, as they're busy at weekends.

That was my starting point, Steve, so take full credit. I then found the Glass and Glazing Federations notice - which Pentagon had edited slightly - and thought it would be useful as a sticky.

What we need next is information on how insurers are going to react to the new regulations. Anyone care to declare their tinting and ask? I would expect insurers to put the onus onto owners to prove the tinting meets the new regulations, just as they ask for documentary proof of Cat 1 alarms where they are a requirement for insurance cover.

My insurers know about my tints, I declare all my mods, and have now said that if the tints are illegal then the car is not roadworthy and therefore the insurance is void!

I'm getting rather acute pains in the pit of my stomach now I reckon L.V may be the same.. but I'd better check with the tinters and L.V at the weekend, just to be sure.

The way the law seems to be framed, its reasonable to assume that your tints are illegal unless you can prove otherwise.

It could be a bit of a minefield if you try to make a claim on a car with front tints. Probably safer to take em off & buy a decent set of sunglasses

Thats why the nice policeman I met today is going to give me a shout once there gizmo is calibrated so they can test mine to see if they are legal. If it is proved they are, I will get it in writing and send a copy to the insurers. I went to the cop shop under my own steam by the way - I haven't been pulled yet.

I would be interested if MOT stations are going to have to have the light level meters as well?

The new laws do not ban tints per say but as most modern car glas is tinted anyway, adding an extra tint probably will take you under the allowed levels of light transmission - just get that in before someone says that their tints are onlr 35% (mine are).

Regards

Steve

I think that my front tints are 30%, so may, just get away with it. Will have to try and get them tested asap! Thanks for the info.

I agree completely with banning stupid levels of tint, but it's daft to ban all kinds! I have come across this site if anyone is interested. It is a petition against the new legislation. Feel free to sign if you feel the same way as me!

Right. What a piece of pi55 job removing my front tints were. The film used was so damn thick that it came off so easily. No hairdryer needed, just the un-sharp end (that'll be blunt then...) of a stanley knife to start it off, and then it just kind of slowly peeled away in one big sheet. On the driver's side not even a tiny bit of glue was left on the glass which I felt quite happy with, and there was only a bit on the passenger side glass... So, after just five minutes work my car now looks like this... apologies for the muckiness - I haven't even washed it yet since I bought it.
