| What do you think? It could lead to less random and silly off topic posts and threads. If you have it running along side the forum, its like having a chat room but not! Keeping the banter away from the forum. YShout 5: A PHP + AJAX Shoutbox <-- looks good! Just an idea I don't mind working on it, aswell as the wiki and skin It could even be a freedom perk?Last edited by apinner; 11-04-2008 at 15:53. |

| We used to have one, but at the time the refreshing of the box put quiet a load on the server as it broadcast to all the connected users.

| hmmm... could there be a risk that people are more careless with their comments if they have the feeling that they are not "really" posting? And so would cause more discord?

This is from the site.. Full-featured History Viewer. While YShout 4 had a history viewer, it was lacking in a few important respects. People requested an awesome history viewer, and YShout 5 delivers. The revamped history viewer contains all of the requested features, and more! Along with the new features, YShout brings a compendious collection of older niceties. The list below is by no means exhaustive, it just contains some of the highlights. » Message deletion. Deleting a message is only a click away. » User banning. Do away with pesky spammers. » BBCode and smileys. Add some spice to your conversation! » Word censor. Keep the shoutbox clean. » Utmost customization. Personalize YShout to fit your site. I would have installed a demo to play with, but its donationware and there is no point in me making a donation unless its worth considering.

)I just thought that maybe the recent development in some of the threads (remember that in most threads there have been business as usual these last days) is a reminder that we can all be guilty of hitting the "submit" button before the often-needed five seconds of afterthought. And likewise of reading other people's posts a little bit too quickly before reacting. So the worrying thought popped up: maybe a shoutbox would promote this behaviour? It was not meant as a dismissal, more as a cautious remark and something of a question to those that have experience of the gadget. My worries may well be unfounded.

![]() Not especially techy so a lot of that website doesn't mean much to me...it doesn't seem to give any info about system requirements or what it actually needs? Would assume it uses some kind of database to record the messages so at some stage or other it's going to be putting additional load on the database? Or have I missed something? Rob.

| I guess the difference between a shoutbox and forum would be that with the forum you hit the submit button and then log off leaving whatever you said out there for people to dwell on, with a shoutbox you are there to justify your comments and douse any bad feelings before they errupt while your not online. I dont think it uses a database, going by the fact there is no mention of mysql or any other db software and the installation procedure does not include creating a database, it probably stores them in some form of txt file. EDIT: Found this on another site.. Quote:

Does this mean that when I go offline all my comments just disappear? No archive? And likewise, when coming back I have no chance to read all stupid OT remarks made during my absence? If so I can see the point - but I must admit I take a lot of pleasure from the friendly OT posting here (also when reading it at a later time) and I would regret if it disappeared altogether ![]() Please forgive me Alex, I just cannot give up those "but have you thought of..." remarks ![]()
