Default Welcoming First Time Visitors

There seem to be an increasing number of people on here who are welcoming every first time visitor - and are doing so in large batches.

Whilist I appreciate it is always good to give new members a welcome, I am becoming increasingly frustrated when I view recent threads (using New Posts or Today's Posts) and come across a long list of welcome posts.

I know I can hide that section, but if I see a new visitor, and paticularly if the new visitor has a question I can help with, then I will reply myself. I just don't feel the need to personally welcome every single one of them!

Am I the only one becoming wound up by this?

The section is there for people to say hello to the site and to the other members, and I would have thought for us to say hello back to them. . If I was new and went to the effort of saying hi to the people on a site I think I would like it if someone was to say hello and welcome back to me

That's the reason I welcome people

I joined a forum and posted in the welcome section and had no posts back

I think it's nice to welcome ALL new members

Maybe it would be better if new comers said hello in the right section and then asked questions, elsewhere in the relevant sections. Does there need to be some further instruction from the mods here? (Say hello here.... but ask any questions elsewhere.......)

I've not got a problem with having the section, and of course all new members should be welcomed. If I ever see a first time post that has been up for a while and has no replies, I would certianly say hello.

My moan is that some people seem to be logging on, and saying hello to every new member that has joined since they were last online!

If all 25,000 of us did that, there wouldn't be much space for other threads.

At the end of the day, if I'm the only one that finds it annoying, I will just have to live with it (or work round it)

i know what you mean. i cant see the point about blanket "hi and welcome to the forum" posts. as if you are someone who knows about forums you can see that the persons not saying hi to you but just increasing their post count.

its nice to be a newbie and get some welcome posts back but seeing all those ones in a line can be anoying.

i dont know if its doen on here but on some sites ive been on the posts in the welcome sections dont count, therefore you tend to get less of this blanket posting

I have to admit I welcomed several people in a row earlier today as I had some spare time in the office, which isn't often. It is nice to be welcomed when joining as I was when I did.

If I caused a problem by doing so, then I apologise.

On a different note, I love the site and have found everyone friendly. Keep up the good work

I think that was the case on here at one point.
I not suggesting it needs to go back to that - it would just be good to strike the right balance between being nice to new members and not filling up the new posts page with welcome threads!

@pacman70 - no apology needed - and you are certainly not the only one! Hope I've managed to explain where I'm coming from.

I think Ants has kinda hit the nail on the head. Briksoda has quite a large 'transient' population where people discover us on Google and aren't interested in anything other than asking their question.

I do try to make a point in welcoming most of the people from a moderator perspective so that at least they can see that there are some of us around.

I try and welcome all new members but have to admit that is habit as I run a site and have to do it on there.

I do think that it is nice for new members to be welcomed, I know if I hadn't been welcomed when I first joined I wouldn't have felt welcome and probably gone elsewhere.

I do agree with Ants mind, maybe it could be clearer that questions should be directed to the relevant threads

I can understand some people going for a "block welcome session" I sometimes add my comments to to 3 or 4 at a time ....the reason .........I am not on here all day so when I am I tend to try and "catch up" with the last days posts
