Default Is this a good deal?

Looking to get a superb and found this:

2003 03 Reg SKODA Superb 1.9 TDi PD 130 Elegance
4 Doors, Manual, Saloon, Diesel, 41,950 miles, Metallic magenta. ABS, Adjustable seats, Adjustable steering column/wheel, Air conditioning, Alloy wheels, Climate Control, Computer, Cruise control, Driver airbag, Electric mirrors, Electric windows, Electric sunroof, Foglights, Electrically adjustable seats, Head restraints, Headlight washers, Heated seats, Immobiliser, Lumbar support, Park distance control, Passenger airbag, Rear armrest, Remote locking, Side airbags, Radio/CD Multichanger, Rear headrests, Traction control, Leather upholstery

They want £8500 for it (dealer). Does it seem like a good deal? According to Whatcar, this year/model should be about £1000 less from a dealer so not too sure.

Also, is there anything I should pay special attention to if I go ahead with it?

Also, any links to any superbs of a similar spec/mileage would be appreciated!

£8500 sounds about right in the current market. Bear in mind the new one is due out in September and the current model prices will fall. The 130bhp diesel is however the better mixed diesel in terms of economy and power.

Look for wet carpets, and a decent service history. And check all the toys work (and interior lights, fade in and out on opening and locking doors)

I've been running my Superb 1.8T Comfort for nearly a year without any major problems. Its an amazing car and if you get one, I'm sure you will feel the same!

Hope this helps!

Mate, I own a 55 plate 1.9 Superb. I wouldnt touch a Superb or any Skoda again with a barge pole.

Dont believe the lies about Skoda being reliable and the dealers being good. The cars are second rate and the dealers are third rate.

My Skoda has been rock solid and I only use the dealers for the parts. My car hasn't had any faults, which is suprising as it is ex police and I haven't exactly been gentle. I do 25-30k miles a year and its been fine. I've just ticked over 100k in it and its still feeling fine.

Find a local specialist and they will look after you, or a friendly member on here

There are bad ones, but there are also lots of good ones.

I for one am a happy driver...

Having a look on the Skoda used cars site there are a few Superb Elegances about for between 7 and 8k...do your homework and be picky there are quite a few about if your prepared to travel...

Sounds a bit dear to me for such an old car. The biggest problem (for me anyway) is that a Superb of that vintage does not have folding rear seats. I would buy a later one and compromise on toy content - the standard base model is OK if you add a cruise control which is cheap to do.

Most points to look out for have been mentioned (water ingress, front suspension) but another is oily EGR valves.

I looked at several 2 year old Superbs before choosing one, and most had oil leaking from the EGR valve body near to where the anti-shudder valve butterfly spindle enters it. This is a sure sign of an engine which will burn oil and soot up its EGR - the oil is pulled into the inlet tract either from the crankcase breather or from the turbocharger bearing seals.

I eventually found a dry one. My engine requires no oil between 10k mile changes - the level drops from the top bend to the middle of the hatched section on the (useless black) dipstick.

With a new model on the cards, expensive fuel and no money about, now is a good time to get one - haggle like hell. The AWX diesel with a manual box is the one to have - mine gives really good economy as long as I'm not towing.

Mine has been reliable - one fault (lazy seatbelt return spring) fixed under warranty.

rotodiesel.

No apology, just an email from them saying "let me no when you want to bring your car in"

Back on topic.....

There was someone on here advertising a Superb Edition 100 - higher miles but much newer and a similar price IIRC.

It seemed to be an absolote bargain for a lovely car - would have been very tempted myself if I hadn't just got the Fabia.

I'll have a quick look and see if I can find the link and see whether it is still for sale.

Edit: Found it. Clicky here and snatch his hand off if its not gone

Oh dear Chris - not nice to hear. We've owned two Skoda's - a 2001 1.6 Octavia which we bought in 2003 with 42k. I had a few warranty issues that were resolved - new wheel bearings; brake discs; a new gearbox. I traded this in last June with 77k for a late 2006 2.0 TDi Superb Elegance facelift and paid £12k with the trade-in. We love the car. I have covered 21k in 11 months, I get 53mpg to the gallon, had had not a single issue. The car is one of the best I've ever had - at any price. The dealers I've used are fine - Withams and Marlborough and are both certianly better than the Ford and Fiat dealers for my wife and 2nd borns cars, but they're not as good as the Kia dealer for 1st borns!

In any event - IMHO with the Superb you get a lot of car for the money and they are pretty robust.

cookie_boy2000,

If you are interested in a Briskoda member's car, i personally find it useful to do a search on the topics the seller has started.

I was interested in a car for SHMBO being sold by a by a Briskoda member (who now no longer posts on here), the car was describes as mint, however my search revealed that a bus had previously taken out the side of the car! (it had all had been repaired).

When someone fails to tell you something like this (i had spoken to them also) then it also makes you wonder what else they are hiding and if the bargain car is really a pup.

This also works both ways, as you can possibly find out about any issues the car has had and the fact that they have been rectified.
