How to replace the heater panel illumination bulb on the MK I Octavia.
You will need: 1 small flat-bladed screwdriver, 1 pair of pliers, one replacement bulb (1.2w 12v 5mm wedge base).

First, open the ashtray then gently pull the bottom of the heater trim panel to release it. Once the bottom is loose, pull the trim to completely remove.

Next, using a pair of pliers, carefully pull the heater control kn0bs to remove them.

Looking underneath, use the screwdriver to undo the white clip from the bottom of the control kn0b surround - there are two, one on each side.

Next, undo the top clips from the control kn0b surround - ther are three, one on each side and one in the centre.

Remove the surround from the control panel by tipping it forward slightly then pulling it straight backwards.

Firmly grip the failed bulb and pull it out of the bulb holder.

Push the new bulb into the bulb holder then turn on the headlights to check.

Refit the control kn0b surround - it should push straight on.
Refit the outer trim panel by locating the clips in the top of the dashboard then pushing the trim firmly home.
Refit the heater control kn0bs.

a piece of small tube can, do the trick also, just take the mittle **** out, push the tube over the bulb and pull out the bulb.
reinsert the same way, just with some oil/silikone on the tube, so the bulb will get loose easyer.

That's the way the Haynes Book of Lies says to do it but I find this way an awful lot quicker - easily less than two minutes.
