Subwoofers...1 x 15inch vs 2 x 12s?

Featured Replies

I'm starting to miss some bass in my car so I'm starting to consider a subwoofer install.

I love the Octy boot so I think the only way for me is to do a fibreglass tyre well build and have things tucked under the boot floor.

I've had 2 x 12s in a standard box before and liked the sound but I think I prefer the neatness of 1 driver.

So question as this is likely to be a big enclosure what's the best a 15 or 2 x 12s?

Has any one got any experiences they could share?

Its such an open ended question tbh, more the question would be "WHAT" subs are you planning to put in as some big subs now only need a small enclosure.

15's imo are awsome and know a couple of people who have a single 15 in there octy boot and powered correcrtly was insane.

Another point would be what type of music do you listen to as you propb already know, 15's drop lower but have less of a punch, where as if you like dance music etc 10's are often a better option.

If you listen to a wide variety of music 12 is a happy medium as drop well and also offer some punch.

Cheers Richie. I think I knew what the answer would be before I asked but your comment of hearing one 15" already and sounding great is encouraging :)

I have such a wide taste in music that it would be hard to pin me down to a type but the deeper sound the better IMO.

15 FTW like i said, seen it in a couple and one is more then enough! I agree the lower the better.

What sub you planning to get?

Dont know what type of install you planning but JL Audio do some nice 13" subs now which drop like 15 and punch like 12s plus they also do a slimline 13" now thats need a tiny enclosure.

Spare wheel well good shout for install though.

I don't have a preference for the sub at the moment as I'm just brainstorming the idea. Mines a company car so I have to be careful with how it's done and to make it non perminant.

Didn't stop me putting the monitors in though lol!

I'll have a better look over the weekend and see how to proceed.

i had a single JL 15w3 in my octy :orb_flami

i gave it a good double its RMS and it loved it,

it gave everything and more lol

its the 1 rich said about lol and half of the 2 that tried to kill him in my mk2 golf :orb_devil

ive had 2 12s b4 and the 15s just gave that nice deep low tone.

as a rule ive found it seems 2 12s would be just about doing what 1 15 of the same level or less would give ??? lol if i remember my peeking lol

if you want to peek around on the mtx.com site they have a displacement calculator ...

hmmmm? :orb_boss:

Just need to let it cure off for 24hrs and then start making it thicker. I think the depth is going to be limiting as i want all this hidden. (gone are the days of boot filling boxes!) So as it looks like a 15inch is best :) how deep are the ones you recommend?

Also it looks like I may need to tilt it to avoid any rearward standing waves so not too straight forward on the baffle front but do-able.

i ts the 1 rich said about lol and half of the 2 that tried to kill him in my mk2 golf :orb_devil

LOL i remember that day, stuck in the back with the volume turned up, couldn't breath lol.

Nice work though m8 cant wait to see the finished project! Keep us updated with pics.

15" FTW m8, you wont regret it!

they can tend to start gettin pretty deep mate these days, hmm?

:orb_geek:

it will be worth peeking around in tinternet to find some mounting depths?

ive just sold my 15w3 and that wasnt daft bein a bit older now....

to throw in a starting point maybe peek at the mtx 7515? lol if ive got my numbers rite .. i think when i was bored online i compared and they are the jl w3 level... but they do there 5515 i think.

all depends on you budget matey :orb_bonk:

like mr farmer said jl are dishing out 13s so a 13w3 may not be daft deep and would give a nice note, low with abit more control.

if you wana chuck on a budget and a depth you got i will happily have a hunt around to see what info i can find you mate :orb_cool:

Ta! I'll have a measure up tonight:)

Stick with the 15!:orb_cool:

In my octy mk1 Im running two tsw3004spl 12 inch pioneer subs powerd by two kenwood 1800w monoblock amps and a 2 fard power cap if any thing the amps are under powered i reckon :headbang:

i have also had a 400w 15 rockford fosgate punch sub with a rockford fosgate 300w amp which took out my rear screen :Yikes:

and two pioneer 2000w 12s with a 2000w rockford fosgate amp

and im my experance it depends on what music you listen to and how loud/bassey you like your music oh and how much dosh you got to spend :D

I like my bass to drop as low as poss :D

TBH I prefer things to sound correctly as opposed to a 50Hz boom.

I've put another layer on the mold tonight and for reference it is 8-9inches deep. (8 in the middle because of the raised spare tyre fastning)

I've sized up the square 10 inch I have already got and TBH it's quite close with that:( Mine is meaty so I hope there is a suitable 15inch out there?

Budget is yet to be agreed with the boss:rolleyes:

I attempted a fibre glass box in the spare wheel bay a good few years ago. I ended up trying to rush it and in the end went off the idea.

Regarding which sub. Just make sure you get the box right. Use WinISD to try and calculate what box/port size you need.

If it is any good for you a friend of mine had a Passat Estate with one 15" and one 10" sub. Running seperate amps the 15" one was set to only work at very low freq where as the 10" was set up to work much higher.

So you'd get some decent bass with the 10" and then went the track went to really low the whole car shook when the 15" kicked in. Was awesome!

Many years ago (:o) I saw an Eminence speaker display at a Live show at Olympia. They had their whole competition range on display from 4" to 18". These were set off in sequence and it's amazing how fuller the sound was getting past the 12inch cone so I understand where you're coming from.

I've added some more fg tonight and tidied the edges. As a sense of scale this is the square 10inch sub I have. It's got a mounting depth of 7 inches and if a 15" is around that I think I might get away with it?

if you look into the MTX T5515-44 it got just under a 8 inch depth and can got into a 1.75 cubic box, which for a 15 isnt that bad

the other hand if you can get 8 to 9 the MTX7515-44 give the same as my old 15w3 jl which was a beast with enuf power :orb_devil

with the disp cal on the mtx the 5515 give 1.72db less than the 15w3, but still isnt goint o be bad , i think another ask yourslef is £££ lol

dunno if im being much help lol

lif needs be and u were handy with a jigsaw u could raise the whole boot floor a smidge to give that extra mounting depth without loosing the tada no sub in this boo look :orb_not_w

if the 15 will fot it will give more than all mr farmers plans lol the mtx subs tend to have a fair xmax so with that and the 15 inch cone lol lol unless you step to a 13w6 the 13 wont do the 15s job :orb_hypno sorry famer lol u knows thos lol lol

LMAO Mr Pearce, you knows this! You are like an MTX pimp! :orb_hypno

So im a bit of a JL fanatic, just putting in my 2 pence worth :orb_squoo

Quite a funky lookin sub

could be worth a peekers lol

better if it didnt have that B int the middle lol

im sure will be cool :orb_bounc

it will prob save you more than a few pennies to mate

keep the pic update coming

MTX T4500 High-Performance Subwoofers

lol another of my mtx bithces lol meet the T4514-44 for all you 2 ohm needs lol hehe

couldnt resist

mounting depth is a bitch, cos most beasties got big magnets ,

lol put a layer of fake floor under the carpet to give that bit of lift lol lol

im sure it will be most cool when your done whatever you go for mate

and stealth , wu hahaha

Well this may turn out to be the slowest build in history :D

I'm now done as I got fed up with looking at it in the garage:rolleyes: I finished the box with some really heavy duty fg woven sheet to give an almost carbon fibre look. Topped off with 18mm MDF and wadded with poly fill. Nothing too brilliant as it's supposed to be hidden. I then pulled the board off the floor carpet and cut a hole directly above the sub and glued an old speaker grill in for reinforcement on the boot floor.

Everything is nice and hidden now :)

I'm still hung up on a 15inch but started with my 10inch square one in to make sure it works first. 2 things have suprised me....1) my 10 prefers a sealed box to a ported 2)there is a noticable drop in road noise in the cabin
