GPS positioning in Roomster

Featured Replies

Just bought a TomTom XL Traffic, and very pleased with it.

BUT, not very happy with locating it in reach. Anywhere on the windscreen is too far to reach easily, so currently it's on the side window, placed so that it's below the line of sight to the 'wing' mirror. But then the power cable has to be strung over the steering column to the power socket between the seats.

Any suggestions?

Stuart

Normally put mine on the dash, bit of a stretch to stick it to the windscreen, but only put it on every now and again.

Put mine on the right hand side of the windscreen in the bottom corner, no problems reaching it....

Thats where my TomTom Go sits.

It's a bit bigger than all these fancy new sat navs but it works there fine.

Offside edge of the windscreen, cunningly oriented to avoid glare. Works like a charm!

I'm looking at mounting my PDA(satnav) holder on the top left hand side of the centre dash console. Blank space on opposite side to buttons for ESP and rear screen de-mist.

I figured that buying a second blank for this means I can glue/screw/etc my holder into the exsisting one and switch over when sale time comes

Hope that makes sense as I can't find a big enough picture to attach

Any suggestions?

Found this from the finnish VAG owners forum. Looks nice, but it may be a bit hard to use while driving..

You may as well turn the screen off to save battery life and just use the sound... knowing some of the idiots who use these things I'd have said that was highly dangerous!

Is the alternative mounting kit any good for you?

I use a Garmin Nuvi 200 with the "beanbag" mount which I can position anywhere on the dash but I don't know if it would fit any other make. I'll try to add a picture when it's not so cold!:mad:

Google "Tomtom beanbag"

I'm considering buying the original Colubus DVD+navi

It would fit nicely, and there should be no trouble connecting the wiring. I have radio commands on the steering wheel (or should I rather say - under it).

What do you think?

Great unit, I have one fitted to my Octavia (factory fit). The idea of a portable unit is so that we can use it in different cars. Also cost is a major factor .(we are talking about my wifes car here!).......

I have hardwired my TomTom go 940 using a brodit proclip and active tomtom mount, I drilled a small hole in the heater / vent "pipe" popped the power cable through it, and then fitted it to the powered mount through the vent louvre. I then sealed the small hole with some trim tape and silicone. I hate wires hanging around the dash, the TomTom takes a 12V ignition switched live from the fuse box. The whole job takes 30 mins, I will post up a pic tomorrow.

It will fit and work fine, the only thing it won't do is feed the directions up to the maxidot like it will in an octy (if you have maxi) Even the standard surround just pops back on, no need for a new one.

Here we go, my TomTom mount fitted as described above, no shonky wires anywhere.

Got one of these:

NAVMAN VENT MOUNT S30 S30 D F20 ICN530 N40i VENT MOUNT on eBay, also GPS Accessories, Navigation GPS, In-Car Entertainment GPS, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 14-Mar-09 09:25:05 GMT)

As I don't use it all that much it seemed a cost effective way of mounting it that doesn't leave a mark on the screen and you can take the main holder off when not in use... also it keeps the satnav high enough but below the sight line....

Saw someone yesterday with the satnav mounted directly in front of them on top of the instrument cluster and just above their steering wheel... madness!

Just what I've been looking for since I bought my Roomster! Thanks very much for the link.
