Acer Aspire One thread

Featured Replies

Saying as us brisky lot like bandwagons.. and the AAO bandwagon has been jumped on by many of us, time for a dedicated thread to everyones favorite toy :D

I have one.. currently running win7 but has been partitioned to put ubuntu and maybe even OS-X on too..

Mine has been upgraded to 1.5gb of ram and replaced the flaky atheros wifi with a Intel 4965AGN unit which makes the wifi faster and more reliable, although ive yet to fit the third antenna required to use N wireless. Ive also got a tiny Bluetooth USB module so i can tether it to my phone for 3g broadband Future mod will include adding an internal USB port for the blutooth :)

Good source of info and HowTo guides availalbe at AspireOneUser.com

So come on.. who else has one :D

Moi! I have one!

Currently have ubuntu installed running the sickboy kuki kernel with 1.5Gb RAM, although i am about to wipe it and partition it up ready for an ubuntu/xp dual boot.

I have not bothered with the wireless upgrade as the atheros works fine for me and i dont have an N spec router, or the bluetooth dongle as my iphone wont allow its connection to be shared. I am however considering the 9 cell battery upgrade, 8 hours on a single charge

Waves :)

I got a 120gb one running Windoze for my VCDS etc. Has been well worth the purchase, excellent for what I do.

They all confuse me... I want the cheapest one, with a solid-state drive, then run a slim version of XP on it...?

Why solid state??

PCworld have the solid-state AAO for 180quid

As you know I have one.

Currently running XP SP3 although with an extra partition should I wish to add something else. ;)

Added Open Office and currently use it for VCDS as its so portable.

Only got the 512meg it came with but have the extra 1gig (at just over a tenner who wouldn't) waiting to go in. :)

I don't need it for anything intensive so I'd rather have the extra battery life :)

You can buy bigger battery packs.;)

Tesco offers the Dell mini 9 with Linux for £194...

It has finally arrived in Sweden, but only with XP and at £410 (current exchange rate)

Well ive been using mine in anger this week while down in slough and i love it! win7 works like a charm, quick and simple..

only thing im not too keen on is the trackpad.. but thats easily sorted with a mouse!

I love mine, i have it with me all day. Again the trackpad is annoying at times, especially the buttons. My only other minor gripe is the 1024x600 res sometimes means things are too tall for the screen, but thats only happened twice.

Bought the missus a pink one for Christmas - she's well happy with it, uses it all the time and takes everywhere with her!

I've been investigating these beauties today and have decided on XP rather than Linux. I do have a question I hope one of you can answer for me though. On the Acer website they offer a 3G model. What would be the benefits/downfalls of going for this model? Is it something that allows you to use your mobile as a modem? If so, it would be pointless for me as I have a monthly internet download limit on my phone and there are so many places offering free wifi now.

I would only use mine to take away with me for internet surfing, or maybe a bit of word processing if I take more courses. Although saying that, if it's that small and light enough I may end up taking it everywhere with me, but the use wouldn't change.

Thanks.

Built in 3G-ness just means its got a SIM card slot so you don't have to have a dongle plugged in or have your phone connected to it.

Bugger..

seems my AAO has a bit of a problem.. basically will switch on ok, then power down after 30-60 seconds.. im almost sure its a heat issue as i cant hear the fan spinning on startup and last time it worked the fan was noisy (as in worn bearings) - probably because the thing was powered on for 3 days solid last week.

Ill strip it down and take a look at the HSF assembly tonight.

3 days solid should not wear out a fan!!

Mine is on all day everyday sat next to me on my desk, no issues! Its that windows 7 i tell you! :P

I managed to pick one of these up in ASDA today. I knew they had them at £150 some time ago but hesitated and assumed I'd missed the boat. Phoned ASDA today and they searched local stores finding quite a surprisingly large number still in stock, albeit not on dispaly.

Quickly dropped the 1gb memory upgrade in (just shy of £15 from Novatech) and she's away. I suspect I'll be switching to Windows XP as I want to use it for VCDS.

Dell Inspiron with a 17" screen,

When I look up the spec for the AAO, it comes back with DDR2 PC2-5300 with a maximum of 1GB per slot. So given there's 512Mb of non-removable and one available slot, the max RAM amount is 1536Mb?

Is that right? Just presumed you'd be able to take it at least to 2Gb.

Correct, the max any AAO will take is 1.5gb (think this is rectified in the 10" one though)

Fair play. And the 6400 RAM Stu's linked to would step down to 5300 properly? Does seem a decent idea, seeing as 6400 is cheaper than 5300 at the moment :)

Steve

I think so Steve, I bought 6400 for mine. It cost me that much for 1GB that's why I posted the deal.
