Asus eeePC thread

Featured Replies

Well seeing as the Acer Aspire One lot have a thread for their netbooks thought i'd create one for us Asus eeePC chaps & chapettes.

Who's got one and which model have you got..... Any mods or alterations that you'd reccomend?? Or any advice / questions this is the place.

I'll start the ball rolling. Bought the mrs an Asus eeePC 901 XP for her birthday. Pearl white version. So far only upgraded the RAM to 2gb and just had a clean up of all the rubbish that comes packaged from new..... installed Firefox & openoffice3 and alsdo running a Veho 8gb SDHC card so have the same 20gb storage as a linux version.

Cheers

Dave.

EEE 701 running 2 gig RAM with 8 gig SD Card installed.

Windows XP running and machine clocked back to 900 Mhz and running some alternative drivers that allow 960x580 on the 7" screen without the silly scroll. Work quite well...

Includes cigarette lighter charger for the car.....

:)

I have a 900a with 2gb ram, 8gb SSD and 2gb SD card.

Running eeebuntu.

Do they have a PCMCIA port?

Do they have a PCMCIA port?

No, well mine doesn't

Pokes head around door....

I've got a 701, in pearly white. Upped to 1gig of ram and running crunch bang linux. I used the standard OS for about 30 mins, then changed to Ubuntu eee which was good - then moved to the standard desktop version of Ubuntu. Only just moved away from Ubuntu.

I take it everywhere with me. Have a pretty quick desktop running Ubuntu at home...

Alex.

:waves:

I've got a 701, white, completely standard, with the standard OS, an SD card for a bit of storage, and a Vodafone Huwaei PAYG USB 3G modem.

I use it for a bit of web surfing out and about- got it to replace my Zaurus Linux PDA. Took it on holiday, as it's small enough but still useable.

It's brilliant for what I want.

Do they have a PCMCIA port?

No. Ethernet, USB, VGA, Audio jacks, and an SD slot. Mine has a blank where a dial-up modem would be.

Lol...

I also have an Eee 701 4g, with 2gb ram and running suse. my dad mainly uses it when he cant be @rsed to take his laptop places

Nice to see so many have also gone for the eeePC too.

Saw an article somewhere this week saying that the netbook version of windows 7 will be released around the time as the normal desktop version..... Not sure whether it'll be available to buy or just installed on new devices. I know a few people are running the beta on their netbooks so would quite look forward to using it.

As i said above only just got the 901 for the mrs this week so still looking at what apps etc are available. So far installed Firefox (Anybody used the Firefox protable version????) along with foxit reader to replace Adobe reader. Also installed openoffice3 rather than MS office 2007 to cut down on further update downloads from Windows Update. The Asus OS Cleaner app keeps the free space to a max on the C: drive.

Found this site & forum..... seems quite a usefull site....... http://www.eeeuser.com/

Cheers

I have a 701, in nice white.

updates to mine: a 2GB ram upgrade, and 8GB SD card.

O/S is running a full fat version of XP Pro SP3, with disabled paging file and some folders moved to the 8GB sd card using ntfs links. Note to self: do not remove sd card with the system running as it blue screens due to the folder mapping.

900 16GB with original Linux Xandros (EasyMode). Keeping standard config except for upgrades to FF3 and OO3, also tweaked it a bit (new wlan drivers) in order to get a working WPA/PEAP wlan connection when in office - outside I use a 3G modem (Huawei E220).

Lovely machine, but two weak spots: the slow 16GB SSD and the 900 model's battery drain design fault.

900 linux 20GB here, in black.

I've installed an N-Lited windows XP OS, and bought a 6600mAh battery for it. Usually get about 3 to 4 hours out of the battery with the wireless on.

Just need to upgrade the RAM a little bit....

Ah. Acer owners have severe problems getting their machine to work properly and are constantly browsing through the web in order to find a solution, while Asus owners patiently enjoy normal surfing.... :loser:

;)

hahaha good response. :D:D:D

Bought a USB DVD-ROM for the EeePC this weekoff ebay as i had got bored trying to get a working copy of the restore DVD to boot off a USB device.....

Decided to perform a restore as i'd botched a couple of app installs which had mistakenly been installed onto the C: drive rather than the D: drive and had left files on there even after uninstall so lowering the free space to around 800mb.

Did the restore and then did a better job of removing all i didn't need and installed all my apps onto the D: drive and now have a steady 1.4gb+ of free space on the C: drive.

Next thing to try is to install Windows 7 on the SDHC card and see how that runs.

I got SWMBO a 701 and upped the ram to 1 gig and put a 8gig sd card in.

All we seem to use it for is watching films....

Thought i'd give RocketDock a try on the small desktop of the mrs' 901 after looking at it a whileback and think it really comes into it's own on the small desktop of the netbook.

I really need to get a hard drive for mine & get XP running on it - although she works well in Linux, it just misses the VAGCOM feature, plus I've got a few tools that are Windows only that WINE wont run :(

Have an 8GB XP 900 which i use when away on work trips! Our office supplied me with a 5 year old, low spec, weighs a tonne, Del Laptop as their response to my request for an "Ultra portable notebook"! So I bout the Eee! So far i've bought an external DVD drive & a higher power battery. Oh and I use a T Mobile 3G USB modem when there is no WIFI!

It might sound like a daft question, but does the 900 support SDHC? I'm sure i read somewhere that it didn't?!?

How easy it it to upgrade the RAM & what type/specification does it need?

I also have an occasional fault on mine that, Asus have tried to fix, in sofar as every so often when it boots, all I get is a "noisy" grey screen. You can hear windows start up theme in the background & it can sometimes take several "re-boots" to get it working again. Asus had me do a full clean install & made me put on the latest BIOS. Thought it was fixed until yesterday! It does seem that this problem happens more often after the Eee hasn't been used for a while?!?!?!

Other than that it's ideal for what I need!

All EEE PCs support SDHC, I have an 8GB one in my now outdated 701 with no problems. The 900 is just a 700 with a bigger screen.

Usually a garbled screen is a hardware fault with the cable between the screen and motherboard working loose or breaking internally.

Asus Eee 901 with:

Windows XP w/ Tweak UI

16GB SDHC card

4GB C Drive

8GB D Drive

I get about 7 hours out of the battery

Havnt done much with it modwise as I only use it to do work on while Im at university, so I imagine next year its going to be pretty left unused while Im working :(

What Linux distros are used by briskoda eee owners?

I still use the default Xandros install with a few tweaks added. Have tried eeebuntu, easypeasy and fluxflux either from liveUSB or installed on SD card (leaving the original install intact). So far I haven't succeeded in setting up connections for my 3G modem and/or the encrypted wifi at work (WPA-PEAP) in either of these alternative OSs - but it works in Xandros

Are there other interesting distros out there worth trying? Preferably they should work right out of the box - not only be said to do so, those I've tried... :P
