Vag-com 16985 - Check sum Error

Featured Replies

Hi guys

Engine management light came on today, i've scanned it and recieved:

16985 - Internal Control Module: Memory Check Sum Error. P0601

From what I can see from searching it's the ECU? :(

I've had an APR remap on there for a year, so I have no idea how this'd work? IE would they honour it and remap it etc..

Anyone know a common solution / fix for this?

Alright Mate,

I would ring APR and have a word with them it may be common and they might know of a solution.

Hey Mart

How's it going mate?

The plot thickens... I just took the battery leads off... and re-attatched them and the light has gone out on the dash. Although if I scan it's still showing up.

Battery is reading 12.35v which seems a little low? Could someone see what their VRS battery is sitting at the moment?

:)

I hadn't, thanks alot mate.

I'll give the company that remapped it a ring tomorrow if they are open :)

Well I had it done at Performance driven in Taunton. I have emailed them:

Hi

I've had the engine management light turn on in my Octavia vRS which at present has a stage one APR remap from you. I have scanned for errors and recieved "16985 - Internal Control Module: Memory Check Sum Error". I am aware that there was an issue with an older version of this map and that this can be resolved by flashing the ECU with a newer version.

This was from Keith at APR:

"The options we have to resolve the checksum error are:

Return to the dealer you purchased your tuning from to have the work performed = no charge

Return your ecu to us to have the work performed = no charge

Visit any dealer that you didn't purchase from = labor

I hope this helps to clear up some of the confusion.

Keith @ Apr"

I was hoping I could pop the car in and have this updated.

Hope to hear from you soon

So let's see what I get back :)

All good mate, sounds like a good company.

Yeah, shouldn't think there should be a massive issue- doesn't take that long to flash it from what I can remember.

We shall see :)

Just a little update, emailed first thing this morning:

"Thanks for your email. This is not a problem, Would be easier if you could ring us to arrange an appropriate time and day to suit all. Then we can get this resolved for you asap."

So big thumbs up for Performance driven

Update:

Drove to Performance Driven today and had this fixed. Got to admit I didn't get the impression the guy was that keen on doing it. Apparently this happens to any 1.8T, doesn't have to be mapped but APR for some reason cover it with their remaps

Receptionist told the chap I was there, he looked at me- then carried on working for 10 minutes came over and said "ITS BEEN SCANNED YEAH" .... so yeah, hi.

Fair play to them though, it's been fixed :)

The only slightly confusing thing was, apparently they take the map off, map it with another map... then put the original map on.

I was hoping for an updated map, cause surely this can happen again... maybe I miss-heard / understood.

Anyway, helpful for anyone else that comes up with this issue.

Nice one glad its sorted......hopefully :)

Guess who's back, back again.

Engine management light came on today, same code:

Hi there buddy long time no speak.

In reading this issue on Johnny's widely known issue he had, it certainly looks to be like a bad remapping that would cause this. and most companies would reflash the ECU. I would also expect if there is a latest level code you should be given that to fix the errors permenantly. As the company fixed it last time you should be able to get support again but insist on a latest flash update

hope you get it sorted

Hi mate

Do you have a link to a thread/site with Johnny's issues? I tried to clear the code last night (for a laugh) and it kept popping up but the management light didn't light up this morning.

I'll double check the codes again tonight and fire off an email. The most annoying thing is, it's about a 250 mile round trip, tempted to try and get some compensation for the petrol as this is the second time now. Reasonable?

She ticked over 100k the other day, still going strong B)

Your situation sounds a bit different though as his went tits up after he'd started the car a certain number of times after they did the remap, and only recently after the remap, whereas yours has been trouble free for a year or more. I'm wondering if water ingress or a damaged plug to the ECU might be the problem in your case.

Long read, might save it for later!! It does seem like a different issue though. From what I can remember last time, this was caused by a chap leaving APR who had "issues" with the company. Pretty crazy for it to pop up again a year and a half later.

What makes you think it could be water ingress or a damaged plug? Is this easy to check, I can't say I've ever found/looked for the ECU on the vRS....

Thanks

I have had this error since last and i'm running stage2 APR map.I was told it can be cleared by APR software but they wanted an hours labour so i will leave it as it doesn't do any harm to the car.

Maybe it's worth me contacting APR since you got yours free last time.

I scan my car every few weeks and clear it but it keeps coming back every few days.

Let us know if you find out any more.

The ECU is under the scuttle panel in front of the wipers, you have to take at least one side of the scuttle panel cover off, then release a clip and slide the ECU out from the cradle it sits in. It has two large multiplugs in the back of it. I suppose water could have got under the scuttle panel somehow or if the ECU has been taken out and replaced at some point (e.g. if it was remapped and they did it on a bench rather than via the OBD port) a pin in the multiplug might have got bent or damaged, although I would have thought that would have shown itself at the time.

I wouldn't put anything past a wily software programmer. Depending on how programmable these ECU's are, someone could maliciously leave a piece of code on there that only executes on a certain date or time, even if that is months afterwards.

Yes, you should def get the update for free. It's an issue with their software so they should fix it. An hours labour is a joke, from what I can remember it's a 20 minute job and it's hardly an issue for a garage. Plug it in, click a few things and then test. Things like this really wind me up...

I'll keep the thread updated :)

Got this code on my car, had an APR trial map couple of years ago and code appeared about year ago, not affected the way the car runs and not paying an hours labour to have it removed when it is a known fault.

Does it not annoy you always having the engine management light on? What happens if another fault occurs.... you won't know about it?

So, my light came back on yesterday. I'm going to ring my local boys (R K Engineering) who are awesome just to see if there is anything they can do, if not I'll carefully word an email to Performance driven.

Edit: Spoken to RK, the only way to resolve the checksum issue is to reflash to I've fired off an email. Let's see what they say!

Good start, haven't had an email back (emailed last Thursday). Guess I'll try ringing them... good customer service! :dull:

Edit: So just rung them, the chap who does the tuning isn't in till Monday so I'll have to call back then. He mentioned it isn't actually a problem with the APR map, more the "standard unit" on the 1.8T setup. That's weird as it only effects your map? Anyway, we'll see what happens on Monday.

A little update, I rung a couple of weeks ago and spoke to the chap who deals with the APR remaps. He gave me the same info, that all 1.8Ts suffer from this.

Have you guys every heard another non-mapped 1.8T doing this?

Anyway, he said he had to email APR to find out if they could do it for free and he'd ring me the next day. It's been nearly 2 weeks now and I haven't heard a thing back. I've also contacted Keith @ APR twice about this with no reply.

Pretty poor service in my books, it's not even a complicated job... Might ring again today but I wanted a definite answer from APR as I have a feeling Performance Driven are going to fob me off / charge me for what is a **** up with the APR map, and even if it isn't a **** up the only way to fix it is to flash the ECU again so it's not as if I have a bloody choice.

There's not been any members on here I can remember who have had the same problem apart from one member who had a checksum error right after he got a remap (not an APR one though). Certainly no-one on here with a standard map that's had the problem... but that's not to say you won't find people with the issue on UkMkIV's, Seat Cupra Net or one of the Audi forums.

Rung Performance driven again this morning (took about 3 minutes to answer) and they apparently haven't heard anything back from APR... but he'll take my name and number just incase and chase it up. Which to me means he hasn't even bothered.

I've had some success though.

Spoke to Andy at Awesome-GTI (APREU). What a nice chap, he explained the process and said they have sometimes seen it on other remaps (revo etc..) and standard cars.

I explained that PD told me they were charged per downloaded map, this is wrong- they are not.

I explained PD told me they needed to email APR in the US hence the delay, this is also wrong.

Andy said he will ring them this afternoon and see what they are up to and explain the process if they are unsure (and ring me back). I've heard good things about Awesome and this was a great level of service. If only they were local!

They said that they normally charge time to fix which is normally about £50. I do begrudge paying an hours labour for what is probably 5-10 minutes of actual work if I'm honest, although I suppose you could argue they've lost a space in their workshop.
