Mk1 Octavia TDI Miltek Turbo Back Exhaust

Featured Replies

After much thought and reading about the CAT / De CAT arguements I finally made the desion to purchase a DeCatted Miltek Turbo Back Exhaust from Awesome GTI as part of their special promotion in March 2009.

Straight away we hit the 1st problem, Miltek only cater for a Mk1 Octavia with the rear bumper cut out and a 6x4 oval tailpipe, now this would have been nice but I needed to keep costs down and still like the idea of a Wolf in Sheeps clothing car so lots of measurements were taken on the OEM backbox/brackets/distance to rear bumper etc etc and mailed off to Awesome who in turn sent them to Miltek to ask if they could help in creating an OEM look backbox for the TDi.

A week or so later a responce from Miltek was given and it was good news, They allready produced a backbox which would fit without alteration and keep the OEM look. So the parts were ordered and fitting was arranged.

On the day a Nice shiney Octavia/Golf down pipe with NO Cat was there along with a Resonator box & a Bora Discreet backbox, this setup was advised as I didn't want any extra noise and wanted it OEM looking.

After 1 1/2 hours Sarah told me it was all done and it went together without any problems what so ever :) so went straight out to take a look, we had a chat with Pete the fitter who seemed a little concerned by mine and Sarahs excitement that it fitted without any problems, Sarah then explained that this was the 1st time this combination of parts had been tried.

1st Impressions

* A little noiser at idle (Slightly more boomy) :thumbdwn:

* The normal tdi smell had changed to an old London Black Taxi Cab/ London bus smell

* Gave the look that I was after, in fact it actually sits higher up behind the bumper than the OEM back box.

* Driving around the boomy noise is certainly more noticable and when you accelerate hard it sounds more like a modded petrol engine and the whistle of the turbo is much more audible

* The spool up of the turbo is much quicker and feels much stronger from 1,750rpm

* There is a very faint lift off sucking/tsscchh noise

After 1month and approx 1000miles

* The boomyness after it was fitted has now gone and is as quiet as the OEM one in normal day to day driving :thumbup:

* The smell is still like an Old London Taxi Cab

* Much less soot is being seen out of the back window :rolleyes::thumbdwn:

* When accelerating hard it still sounds like a modded petrol but not too loud.

* The spool up of the turbo is still the same, very quick and very strong and the whistle from the turbo is still just as noticable

* The faint lift off sucking/tsscchh noise has about dissappeared :thumbdwn:

* The tailpipes don't point down to the ground as much as the OEM one which has resulted in a small dark patch of soot on the back bumper :thumbdwn:

* My driving pattern/route has changed for the worse but my mpg is better than when I had the OEM exhaust fitted

I need to double check next week to see if there are any marks but I think I've found a problem, I now car share with 2 other people and on the way into work this morning I kept hearing a knocking noise after the guy in the back had got in the back of the car, He is about 18stone but this might become a problem for those people who have older children and a boot full of stuff for a Holiday.

Hi Matt

Superb write up there , thank you for that

I must admit , I was all nerves when we was fitting this , just in the hope that it all went well , and it did

When your back in we can check it out for you.......plus make an alteration if it is needed

Quite a few exhausts do just need a slight adjustment , and to be fair....I would not expect yours to be different

Glad you still like it :D

A bit of an update. Had the car on the RR and as the exhaust is the only change to the car since the last time it should quite clearly be obvious what effect the Miltek has had.

Well, 11bhp increase and a 23ftlb or torque more so it's well worth the cost.
